Good drives, check firmware

WD Red Plus 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s, CMR, 64MB Cache, 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX
WD Red Plus 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s, CMR, 64MB Cache, 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Great for media center storage or every day usage. These drives combined with HDD Guardian will keep going for a long time. Great $/GB at the time.

Cons: Firmware had issues in some facilities, make sure you check for any updates your drives may need after ordering! If you don't get the update they act like the WD Greens that constantly moved the heads and destroyed themselves.

Solid Buy

Seagate BarraCuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Packaging

Pros: Cheap, good for starting a build, no bad sectors or issues yet.

Cons: Ran a little loud when I first started using it, but made sure to grab the firmware update from the Seagate website so the discs didn't break themselves. Post-update it runs quiet.

Worth it

NVIDIA Gift - DUKE NUKEM FOREVER Game Coupon
NVIDIA Gift - DUKE NUKEM FOREVER Game Coupon

Pros: Sold it for cash, not a huge amount (nobody really wanted this game) but it made up for some of the shipping costs.

Cons: Nobody wanted this game, hence why it was given away.

WD Elements 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive
WD Elements 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: Large drive, not a huge cost, decent read/write speeds. Can handle some punishment due to its casing, but it's still just a hard drive.

Cons: Large, unstackable, and not even supposed to place on a desktop case. Also was a bit overpriced for an external drive, but the WD brand name was alluring.

Does the job

Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 400 (PC2 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR400D2N3K2/2G
Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 400 (PC2 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR400D2N3K2/2G

Pros: Simple RAM with not a lot of perks, but it does what it needs to for every day computing.

Cons: Nothing spectacular about it. Kingston makes durable products that do what their specs say, expect no more.

Good for computing

Acer Laptop Aspire Intel Core i5-450M 4GB Memory 320GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 15.6" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit AS5745-3633
Acer Laptop Aspire Intel Core i5-450M 4GB Memory 320GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 15.6" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit AS5745-3633

Pros: This laptop has quite a bit of power for calculations and such. Its hard drive capacity was more than enough for 4 years of college for me. It has a fairly large screen with nice differences in brightness between settings. The stock battery typically lasted 4-6 hours at the start and now lasts more like 3-4. 4 GB of RAM is nice for any laptop.

Cons: This year the fan is finally dying. I kept the laptop clean and took it apart multiple times per year to ensure there was no dust accumulation and this helped keep heat down. The one fan inside has a non serviceable bearing, making the original lubrication the only thing keeping it spinning. This is an issue, as any warping or offset in fan spin will cause it to rapidly break down. Fans are relatively cheap, but a fan that was serviceable would have given an egg back. Also, not having a GPU makes this laptop basically useless for any drawing programs, gaming, or simulation. Price - get a desktop with better specs for less if you don't need to take a pc to class.

Overall Review: Overall a good buy for a college-going individual. Not the best laptop, but it's durable and has nice features.
