Intel Core i7-4790 Haswell Quad-Core 3.6 GHz LGA 1150 84W BX80646I74790 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600
  • Owned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Picked one up for 249 locally and this processor is a beast. The only con is stock cooling is inadequate if you truly utilize the power of this chip. I might add that most applications have a hard time stressing this chip at all however for CPU intensive apps it will get hot. I am using an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Revision 2 with Arctic Silver thermal paste. With this tower cooler running an Intel Burn in test which the CPU up can reach upwards of 75C, Stock cooler is 20 degrees hotter which will cause throttling. The Intel burn in test will get the CPU hotter then a prime95 burn in so I like to use that to torture test my chips. I'm still giving 5 stars due to the power and performance of the chip. Turbo up to 4GHz gives you enough performance to tackle the most demanding applications and this chip should remain a contender for years. Boot time to Windows 7 with a Samsung Pro SSD is about 4 seconds to usable desktop. Handles streaming of steam games very well to other lower powered systems in the house. Processor is really overkill, I was looking at the i5 4690K however with the price being only 50$ more I wanted 8 threads to handle everything I can throw at it.

Cons: Stock Cooler should be replaced if you use demanding applications.

Other Thoughts: All in All this is a great CPU for a reasonable amount, this particular chip offers a good value for the performance offered when you get it on sale. If you want to upgrade an existing socket 1150 system this is a great way to give you tremendous multi threaded horsepower. If you are power hungry and want a little more horse power you can opt for the K version and overclock as needed however this chip truly is a beast and most will find that it offers tremendous performance.

MSI 760GMA-P34(FX) AM3+ AMD 760G 2 SATA 6Gb/s (7~8) ports by ASMEDIA 1061 Supports storage and data transfers at up to 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: I benched this board with an FX 6300 briefly before upgrading my HTPC Server. Boot time is slower then my other new motherboard's. Multithreaded tasks run like a dream and this system resolved my CPU bottle neck on a budget. I went with this board for price and the fact that it has 8 SATA ports which I need for all my Media Center Drives and DVR access for TV and Security Cameras. Solid State Capacitors are great for long life of the board.

Cons: BIOS is dated, when installing 3TB+ drives board try's to boot from those rather then OS drive on SATA port 0. USB 3 drivers required registering several JAVA dll's for the installer to complete successfully in my case. Would be nice if core system driver installer didn't need JAVA to install correctly.

Other Thoughts: Great Bang for the Buck which is always one of my main concerns. Paired with an FX 6300 you get a lot of horsepower. Old School BIOS menu included with this board stock.

5 out of 5 eggs Powerful AMD Processor at a Budget Price 06/25/2015

This review is from: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 6-Core 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W FD6300WMHKBOX Desktop Processor

Pros: Replaced an aging A8-3850 with this unit as my HTPC was handling additional HD Cameras / TV tuners and was starting to get bottlenecked. Installation of new board and CPU was quick and the CPU immediately performed significantly better eliminating my CPU bottleneck. For 99$ this chip is an excellent performer. I specifically purchased this for its ability to handle a lot of operations simultaneously as my system serves up cameras, Media, TV, Caller ID and our libraries to all of our devices at home and outside of the house. Given this is a Black Processor I will have head room to overclock in the future if my demands on the HTPC Server increase.

Cons: Draws a little more wattage then I prefer for a 24X7 system however its no more then the former APU processor I utilized. Stock cooling unit likely cant handle much of an overclock at descent temps but that's expected.

Other Thoughts: Tremendous Value and great for those who like to Overclock. In my case for 24X7 usage the Stock speed has plenty of headroom to handle all of my HTPC and Camera Server functions.
