Seagate Desktop HDD ST1000DM003 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5

1 out of 5 eggs Updated review after 4 yrs of use 04/15/2016

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST1000DM003 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Single platter 1TB drive for under $100. Light weight, allows for excellent handling for file compression.

Cons: Update---Drive's I/O interface failed after four years of use. The dirve motor was still running but the I/O would not work. This should not happen after only four years. I have never had a WD drive fail like this before. Some of my WD drives are nine years old and still healthy and going strong. As such, will not buy Seagate again.

Surprisingly difficult to format. Bought two of these for my server (one as a primary and one back up drive). Neither would successfully format on my server (Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition) Had to attachment them to an XP box to get them to complete a good format. Once formatted, my server recognized them and all is good. Found that very strange.

Other Thoughts: First time in a long while I have bought Seagate. I usually buy WDs for their reliability and performace. Bought these as they were nearly $20 cheaper for the same size, cache and performance as the WDs. (HDD prices are too high anyway, they need to come down). Gave it three stars due format problems and that fact I can't comment on reliability yet. Will in about two years. The drives they replaced were 6 years old which were WD Black editions.

Acer S0 Series S220HQL (ET.WS0HP.A01) Black 21.5

  • neweggOwned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Very thin
1080p resolution
Very light weight

This monitor will provide a very nice image at a nice resolution.

Cons: Very wide
Has a power brick
The DVI port is a single link DVI-D
Default setting is very bright.

The width of this monitor gets in the way in my dual monitor workstation. Would have preferred a non-wide screen but this monitor was $60 cheaper than the same resolution non-wide screen. Did not make sense to buy the other. I can live with the width.

The power brick is a pain. Also, the power cable that goes into the brick is proprietary. There is no excuse for this Acer! You should have just used the standard computer power plug for the brick. The only reason you did this is to ensure you get more money if the original cable is either lost or damaged some how.

Do not buy this monitor if you have to use DVI-I plugs. It will not support it.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a nice monitor. It provides a crisp clear image and is ideal for HD applications. Not idea for workstation application (unless you edit video) but it will work nicely. You will just need to adjust your other monitors to accommodate it.

Pros: Solid quality build
Modular
Delivers stable power

Provides a good amount of power for mid range systems. Will power two mid range GPUs or one high end GPU (don't expect it to power the top of the line though).

Cons: Would have preferred more HDD/SSD/Optical headers. This would have allowed me to use both serial power cables and a molex to power to some of the other peripherals in my system. Not to mention a non PWM fan or two.

I also noticed this one did not come with enough PCI cables to populate all the PCI headers. I thought that was strange.

Other Thoughts: Very nice PSU for the money. I would recommend this for any mid range build. This PSU is a huge overkill for a budget built. It has too much power. Budget builds really don't need anything over 400W at most. 300W is usually plenty for a budget build. Also, if you are going to use two higher end cards (say R9 270X/79xx and up or Nvidia GTX 750 and up) then spend more money! Buy a a more powerful PSU.
