StarTech SATDOCK2REU3 - Extends PC Life

StarTech.com SATDOCK2REU3 USB 3.0 SATA Hard Drive Duplicator & Eraser Dock - Standalone 2.5/3.5in HDD & SSD Eraser and Cloner - Duplicator & Sanitizer
StarTech.com SATDOCK2REU3 USB 3.0 SATA Hard Drive Duplicator & Eraser Dock - Standalone 2.5/3.5in HDD & SSD Eraser and Cloner - Duplicator & Sanitizer

Pros: In my business, I have very expensive equipment. In 2013, I upgraded my office with $13,000 investment in 3 new Windows 7 PC's running Win7 Ultimate with Win XP virtualization for legacy hardware and software support. However, I needed to keep 3 older PC's running Win XP, because of complex hardware issues related to a very expensive legacy HP laser printer ($6500, large format) and legacy software that won't run on even Win 7 in XP virtualization. So, I needed to protect the old legacy hardware and software investment. The answer for me was (is) the StarTech USB 3.0 HDD Duplicator. I bought 3 new high end Seagate Constellation ES.2 2 TB hard drives, with MTBF failure rating of 1.2 Million hours, and 5 years warranty for the legacy PC's. With the StarTech duplicator, I was able to clone the old hard drives in my old PC's in one day, literally turning them into new PC's with extreme reliability. My most worrisome reliability issue is now completely gone. This is a killer piece of hardware for protecting PC operating systems and data, with a virtually identical copy on a new hard drive. A 250 GB drive is cloned onto a new duplicate drive in about 75 minutes. A 2 TB drive takes about 5-6 hours. It's the size of the drive, not the amount of data on it that determines the cloning time. This hardware will be a life-saver for many people with aging computers.

Cons: The user instructions are not clear that the buttons must be held for 3-4 seconds to start cloning or erasing of hard drives.

Overall Review: It is also a hard drive dock, permitting connection of the cloned (or any working hard drive) to a desktop or notebook computer for file updating, through the USB 3 port. The lights on the front change over to activity lights, equivalent to the hard drive light on PC's, when using the duplicator as a dock. The duplicator works with both desktop and notebook hard drives. Just drop them into the slots on top, turn the power switch on, in back, and go to work cloning or transferring files. There is an erase button, concealed on the back of the duplicator to remove all data from drives. Cloning copies bit-by-bit from HDD1 to HDD2 slot. To start cloning, or erasing, the user must hold the respective button for 3-4 seconds to start the clone or erase. Erase will erase the data drives in either slot. The slots are labeled Source, and Destination. I recommend for safety that users label their hard drives on the opposite end from the connectors (on top) with masking tape, before cloning or erase to make sure that the drives are inserted into the correct slot. After you have cloned your older hard drive, you will sleep much better, knowing the PC will not fail. DO keep the old drive as a backup, AND you can also update it in the dock feature, later on. SIMPLY AMAZING! You won't want to be without this hardware to protect your PC's. It adds to your backing up arsenal tremendously. It has given me tremendous piece of mind, knowing without a doubt that my old PC's will not fail me in the legacy support that I need in my business. (My purchase of the StarTech duplicator was not from newegg, but, I do purchase from newegg regularly)

WORKS, where other DP v1.2 cables don't

Coboc D-MINID-MM-10-WH 3ft 32AWG Displayport1.2 High Bit-Rate 2 Mini DisplayPort Male to DisplayPort Male Cable with latching,Gold Plated,White - MDP to DP,4K x 2K Ready - Eyefinity Support
Coboc D-MINID-MM-10-WH 3ft 32AWG Displayport1.2 High Bit-Rate 2 Mini DisplayPort Male to DisplayPort Male Cable with latching,Gold Plated,White - MDP to DP,4K x 2K Ready - Eyefinity Support

Pros: I purchased this mini DP to DP v1.2 cable to replace a factory supplied 6 foot cable for my new BenQ BL3201PH 4K resolution monitor. I needed a longer cable to be able to support the 4K standard, and allow the monitor to be routinely pivoted between landscape and portrait display modes. Other supposedly rated DP v1.2 cables that I purchased (Syba brand) would not work at all with this monitor connected simultaneously to two PC's, or stand-alone. This cable works perfectly, and I can highly recommend it for 4K applications to other potential buyers.

Cons: I had no problems, and my BenQ monitor works perfectly in 4K resolution, immediately after initial connection with this Coboc cable, where other cables I tried failed.

C2G 28104 USB Cable - USB 2.0 A Male to B Male Cable for Printers, Scanners, Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson, HP and more, Black (16.4 Feet, 5 Meters)

Pros: Excellent quality; available in the length I needed for a CPU to Monitor application. A very good quality product, you can trust, and it will work well.

Cons: None at all

Overall Review: The Cables to Go 28104 cable was purchased for a new system I am building for my engineering office. It connects a new HP ZR2740w monitor to a high end HP Pavilion h8-1360t desktop PC, permitting the PC USB access from 4 monitor ports. The cable works NICELY!

Tripp Lite Displayport cable - Works Great

Tripp Lite Model P583-010 Mini Displayport to Displayport Cable Male to Male
Tripp Lite Model P583-010 Mini Displayport to Displayport Cable Male to Male

Pros: I've had the Tripp Lite P583-010 (10 Ft) male Displayport to Mini male Displayport cable in service on my new PC, for about 8 months. It's working extremely well on a high end engineering PC, running with a HIS HP7870 Ghz edition graphics card, connecting to a HP ZR2740w IPS monitor, running at 2560x1440 pixel resolution. I am very pleased with the cable. In fact, Iam building a second identical work station beside this one. (HP h8-1360t Pavilion desktop with i7, fully loaded, running Windows 7 Ultimate, with Virtual Windows XP support activated).

Cons: None, at all.

Overall Review: A VERY fine cable. A great price on newegg.com. Buy it, and you'll like it. I am purchasing my second cable today, for the new duplicate PC engineering work station.

My update on ZR30w - after 2 years

HP ZR30w Black 30" 7ms S-IPS Panel Height &Swivel Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor w/USB Ports 370 cd/m2 DC 3,000:1
HP ZR30w Black 30" 7ms S-IPS Panel Height &Swivel Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor w/USB Ports 370 cd/m2 DC 3,000:1

Pros: High performance, high resolution, large format monitor.

Cons: Needs color calibration; considerably off, using factory setting. (I used Datacolor Spyder software) It makes quite a difference, in critical color work. Brightness seems lower, over time. It definitely gets brighter, and stabilizes brighter after about 10-15 minutes from turned on. Price is very high, although the monitor has few peers, and some others are more expensive. In the purchase of a second large format monitor for my office upgrade, I recently purchased (another source) an HP ZR2740w monitor. (Still have the 30 inch)

Overall Review: In a recent upgrade of my office equipment (private engineering practice), I added a new HP ZR2740w monitor. Two things drove my decision: nearly the same size; substantially lower cost. The ZR2740w monitor is a lot of bang for the buck, as they say. A GREAT value. One extreme surprise that I have appreciated a lot is the MUCH brighter screen of the ZR2740w, over that of the ZR30w. Also, when it initially turns on, it is full brightness. There is no "warm up" to full brightness. This is geatly appreciated. I believe this is perhaps due to the LED backlighting improvement, not used in the older monitors. Both are good monitors, but I am greatly impressed with the savings, and high performance of the new 27 inch HP monitor. Given the choice today, I would have purchased the 27 inch monitor over the 30 inch. I really appreciate the extra brightness of the ZR2740w monitor. But, you do have to turn it down in lower lighting conditions. I have set up shortcut keys on my keyboard to do this, using the Catalyst Control Center software that comes with Radeon based graphics cards that I use. (My card is the HIS7870, which I purchased from newegg)

Hewlett Packard ZR30w - astonishing, captivating

HP ZR30w Black 30" 7ms S-IPS Panel Height &Swivel Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor w/USB Ports 370 cd/m2 DC 3,000:1
HP ZR30w Black 30" 7ms S-IPS Panel Height &Swivel Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor w/USB Ports 370 cd/m2 DC 3,000:1

Pros: Extremely high resolution, wonderful spacious view 1 Billion colors sets the world aflame for all PC uses Extremely easy setup and use Higher efficiency is a plus for such a large monitor I work professionally in my home office, in Chemical Engineering. I use many types of software, including drawing software, plant modeling (process simulation), and everyday office tools like spreadsheets and word processing. The ZR30w is a terrific upgrade for me over my Viewsonic professional series VP2030b monitor.

Cons: None for me Some would say lack of a built-in scaler, but... Scaler functionality is in graphics cards and support software

Overall Review: I also ordered a new graphics card for my older PC, which doesn't have PCI Express 2 slots. So, I chose a PCI based card (HIS 545H512P Radeon HD5450 Silence, with no fan), which supports the 2560x1600 resolution of the new HP monitor. I also ordered a longer 10 foot DVI Dual Link cable. The monitor comes with 6 foot cables - not long enough for my office arrangement. Conclusions: The HP ZR30w monitor just dazzles everyone that sees it. When you first see a Billion colors displayed on screen, instead of 16 Million, it's really shocking. After that, you never want to go back. This monitor really delivers. Your photos and videos have tremendous detail that you never realized. Graphics look fabulous with the HP ZR30w for all kinds of software and computer uses. It's kind of like trying to describe a color or taste. You really have to experience it for yourself, and then you're fully amazed. Without hesitation, this is an incredibly exciting improvement for your computer.
