No more waiting

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 2.6 GHz Socket AM2 65W Processor - ADO5200CZBOX
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 2.6 GHz Socket AM2 65W Processor - ADO5200CZBOX

Pros: No more waiting. This thing cruises with Vista and CPU meter in mmc is low while I do several things at once. Low wattage/heat. I intend to do some video editing but have not as of yet due to my version 8 s/w not listed on the maker's website as Vista compatible.

Cons: none

Overall Review: This is the one to get. If you do your homework you will find it has lower power consumption and larger L2 cache then the other AMD's in this league.

It Rocks

Intel 520 Series Cherryville 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSC2CW120A3K5

Pros: It Rocks! Mine is running Win7u and the Windows experience rating is 7.9 out of a possible 7.9 attached to an Intel 6Gb/s controller on a Gigaxxxx mobo. Boot up is speedy. Large enough for all my programs and two boot partitions - I keep data on a pair of RAID1 spinning HDD's.

Cons: none yet

Overall Review: still trying to find the cons...

Yeaah Baby

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C9Q-32GXM
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C9Q-32GXM

Pros: Lightning fast. Scores 7.9 out of possible 7.9 on Win7u experience index. My boot drive is SSD but I don't use a pagefile. Gigabyte mobo detected them and set them with no problem.

Cons: Very pricey.

Great graphics for non-gamers

Intel Core i7-3770 - Core i7 3rd Gen Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.4GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Intel HD Graphics 4000 Desktop Processor - BX80637I73770
Intel Core i7-3770 - Core i7 3rd Gen Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.4GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Intel HD Graphics 4000 Desktop Processor - BX80637I73770

Pros: Super fast. Great graphics - it has been written that the biggest improvement in this processor for most of the extra transistors is the graphics unit. It does not disappoint - I don't play games on my computer and have no desire to purchase dedicated video card(s). Windows7u performace rating from 1 to 7.9 with GA z77x-ud5h and 32GB ram and Intel 520Cherryville ssd: Processor - 7.8 Memory - 7.9 Graphics - 6.6 GameGraphics - 6.6 PrimaryHDD - 7.9

Cons: A bit pricey. It only rated 7.8 out of 7.9 Win7u performance.

Overall Review: I always wished I could afford a top-shelf cpu but always had to settle for middle-of-the-pack until now. I suspect that I will be speed-competitive for the next several years.

This is the only choice if you have extra cash

Icy Dock MB994SP-4S | 4 x 2.5 Inch SATA 6Gbps/SAS HDD/SSD Mobile Rack / Cage in 1 x 5.25 Inch bay | ToughArmor
Icy Dock MB994SP-4S | 4 x 2.5 Inch SATA 6Gbps/SAS HDD/SSD Mobile Rack / Cage in 1 x 5.25 Inch bay | ToughArmor

Pros: Fantastic build. HDD lights do indicate activity for each individual drive. Only two ide power connectors required for 4 drives. Makes great use of old laptop drives that I have outgrown. I now have easily swappable O.S. drives. Much easier than opening the case to test/swap drives.

Cons: A bit pricey ... but ... after reading reviews of the cheaper plastic ones I knew that those who can afford this one deserve to have it.

Overall Review: If they make a 3-bay unit with mem-card slots in the 4th bay then I would buy it and give this one away. Beware that it requires ide power connectors - not Sata power connectors so order convertors if you need them.

My 2nd Gigabyte - Happy Again

GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I stopped using that 'A'-company when I got mobos that didn't last 2 years without a problem. I still use my 5-year old Gigabyte GA M61P-S3 but have relegated it to be my WinXP machine (for special reasons). After 5 problem-free years I was only interested in another Gigabyte. This mobo is solid and does not disappoint. I use i7-3770 with 32gb of RAM and Intel 520 SSD Win7u on the 6Gb/s Intel port as my boot drive. The other ports are full of hdd's and dvd's. So far, so good - and I expect nothing less for the next 5 years.

Cons: no fdd port. had to pay for it. OK - that's really "None" for cons :)

Overall Review: haven't used the mSata b/c I bought a 6Gb/s SSD and the mSata is 3Gb/s.
