ASUS P9D-C/4L ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 DDR3 1600/1333

5 out of 5 eggs Fantastic 07/21/2013

This review is from: ASUS P9D-C/4L ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 DDR3 1600/1333

Pros: I've been using this board with a new Haswell Xeon processor and 32 GB ECC UDIMM RAM. Using it for several weeks now as part of a budget-minded XenServer deployment.

Posts quickly, good fan control from the BIOS.
Everything you want in a server motherboard; a LOT of expansion for SATA drives out of the box.

SAS drives, too costly for me so I cannot talk to how they work; the SAS ports are not enabled unless you purchase a PIKE raid controller as well.

I like this board so much, I'm buying another.

Cons: IPMI management is supported but requires an additional card that I cannot find anywhere at this time, the ASMB7-IKVM

Western Digital WD Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5

Pros: Worked great - while it was working. Good speed, runs cool and quiet.

Cons: After being in my server for about 3 weeks (and working fine), the drive failed. Rebooted the server, and after reboot the BIOS didn't even see the drive any more.

Second drive in the system (same type) kept on working.

Other Thoughts: I've had several failed WD drives over the years. For this price on a 1TB drive I thought "I'll risk trying WD again".

I shouldn't have. Factoring in my time to deal with the hassle of replacing the lost data and exchanging the drive, the money I saved still isn't worth it.
