Nice and quiet

BIOSTAR Viotech 3100+ VIA C7-D 1.6 GHz VIA NanoBGA2 VIA CN896 Micro ATX Motherboard / CPU Combo
BIOSTAR Viotech 3100+ VIA C7-D 1.6 GHz VIA NanoBGA2 VIA CN896 Micro ATX Motherboard / CPU Combo

Pros: Low power, fanless, yet all of the typical features. I wanted a power-miser of a motherboard to use for an Ubuntu home server, using the Ubuntu desktop distro. Some quirks in setup, but now works very nicely. Ubuntu required no assistance in running the graphics, network and sound. Installed 1 GB, 1 SATA HD and 1 IDE CD. Nice and quiet. No part of the tower is warm to the touch.

Cons: Some quirks in getting Ubuntu and this board to play together. Using a SATA HD and IDE CD, I could not get Ubuntu to start properly off the Live CD. Went to Live USB stick and it installed without trouble. The motherboard complains and halts post if I disconnect the CD drive - haven't fully investigated that yet, but no big deal. Sound has distortion issue if set at 100%, but this is easily compensated with my amplifier. Heat sinks get pretty warm - hooked up chassis fan to help cooling.

Overall Review: Runs very well with Ubuntu desktop edition and keeps power draw at a low level.

Unreliable

Seagate BarraCuda Green ST1500DL003 1.5TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda Green ST1500DL003 1.5TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None.

Cons: Ordered two drives to beef up storage on an Ubuntu server. First drive was making high frequency noises within five minutes of first power up, then dropped off. Second drive made it for about 5 hours of operation before it had the same failure. Thanks to newegg for their return policy!

Overall Review: I've always had good luck with hard drives and have rarely had failures. To have two brand new drives fail essentially upon delivery to me is unheard of. At least they failed quickly and before they went into operation on the server.

Great for Local and Remote Storage

WD 2TB My Cloud Personal Network Attached Storage - NAS - WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN
WD 2TB My Cloud Personal Network Attached Storage - NAS - WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: After searching around, decided to try this one because of the reviews. Easy setup, updated firmware, and transferred 500 MB right away. Network took awhile to make the first upload (16 hours) but that was likely due to an older switch in the network and not the WD device. Can access remotely via WD website - great feature that I didn't fully appreciate until after I used it. Update: Coming up on 2 years in service. The device has been reliable and I've had no issues. Overall I'm very pleased - lots of storage and no fuss.

Cons: Wish the PC-side programs were lighter and faster. Depending on how you use it, you'll be installing a little or a lot. 99% of my use is as a local network drive, so quickly jumping to the drive in Explorer is most appreciated.

Overall Review: None.

Great Performance

XFX Double D Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card FX-787A-CDFC
XFX Double D Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card FX-787A-CDFC

Pros: Used on a new budget build, running with an ASRock Z75 Pro3 and i5-3350P. Works great. Haven't taken it to the max yet but it doesn't flinch with Steelbeasts v3 and FSX, with FSX's settings to the max. I have plans to take it further to the edge...

Cons: Has two 6-pin PCI-E power jacks, and I had to get a connector adapter because my PSU only had one 6-pin jack. It is also a sizable unit and the fans point down. It fits fine on my build but you'll want to avoid having any PCI cards below it or the airflow could get impeded. Used rebate card but price could still be lower. Radeon is on to a new video card lineup, so this series ought to be at bargain basement prices.

Overall Review: Closely considered this against the new R7 and R9s. It appears that the R9 270X and this card are very similar and have the same silicon inside, so I figured I could get almost all of the performance at a discount by going with the HD 7870. So far no regret and enjoying the cash I saved.

Works Fine

SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS
SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208DB/TSBS

Pros: The idea is simple - take a laptop drive and sell it separately in its own plastic shell. Got it for two reasons: 1. External drive for Asus T100. Works great - Win8 sees it fine. Reading is fine, haven't tried writing yet. Didn't need provided drivers. 2. Bring-up of new desktop build. Didn't want to buy a whole DVD drive just for that step, so used this. The new build booted right off power-up on the Win7 64b CD in this drive. Didn't even need to tell BIOS to boot off it. Super smooth. Runs entirely off USB, including power.

Cons: Not the fastest drive I've ever encountered - probably because it has to keep a lid on power consumption since it powers off the USB. As noted above, it was used to load up a new blank desktop build and more speed would have been nice, but not a big issue. Also, it choked on one game install disk, but I haven't tried that disc in other drives to isolate the issue. Also, I never used the driver disc provided in the package, which could also be the issue.

It's Grease

Pros: Used on a i5-3350P and its stock cooler on a ASRock Z75 Pro3. Works great. No thermal issues.

Cons: None
