G.SKILL TridentZ Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Intel Z170 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3000C15D-32GTZ

Pros: - Will run at 3000MHz. Please realize that all ram at this speed is considered overclocked, and you will have to set the timings manually in your Bios, which may be limited by your motherboard. Check your other hardware specs to see if you can actually run 3000MHz RAM before buying this.

- The little red accent pieces are easily removable plastic bits. The red didn't match my case at all, so I took them out. I think I'll actually paint them white and put them back in, but the ram looks just fine without them on. The metal finish on these is very high quality.

Cons: - The price on these fluctuates quite a bit. I bought mine at $160.

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 DirectX 12 GV-N1070G1 GAMING-8GD 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 ATX Video Card

Pros: - Tops out at 70C over extended period of max load, usually reaches only 67C while gaming.
- Runs Overwatch and Starcraft 2 at maximum settings at 4k, never dropping below 60fps.
- Unigine Valley benchmark at 4k holds steady just above 30fps with everything maxed out. 50fps + with anti-aliasing off.
- Utility allows custom fan setting and RGB light control (more on this below)
- Very quiet, though it is the loudest item in my build under full load.
- Pretty back plate
- 8GB of memory is nice for GPU accelerated machine learning.

Cons:
- The first one I ordered had extremely loud coil whine. My RMA replacement still has some whine, but I don't notice it when the case is closed up and running. Newegg was of course cooperative with the RMA process.

- When the card dips below 50C, only one of the three fans shuts down like it is supposed to, and the other two are held at a voltage that causes them to spin intermittently. I don't think this is a real cause for concern, but does indicate a quality issue that Gigabyte should fix (you can find other users with this issue on Youtube). I used their "Extreme gaming engine" utility to set a custom fan profile that instead of shutting them down at 50C, it just holds them at 30%.

Pros: i was initially impressed with this drive.

good speed.
good capacity.
good price, competetive with WD's offerings at the time, which is the only other brand of desktop hard drive i ever purchase.

HDD tune
128.4MB/sec maximum
102.1MB/sec average
63.0MB/sec minimum
15.3MS average access time
144MB/sec burst transfer rate

but read on.

Cons: runs hot. since this drive had my OS installed on it, i gave it the best ventilated prime real estate in my case.
always seemed warm.

im writing this review after about 18 months of ownership. A few weeks ago the drive failed, too many bad sectors, i was able to recover much of my important data from the drive before ultimate failure to even boot. I have now completed the RMA process, Seagate sent me a refurbished unit of the exact same hard drive. Seagates warantees are only 3 years, and i had to spend $10 on packaging and 10$ on shipping that meets their rediculous requirements. (newegg does not ship NEW hard drives to these requirements, and newegg is almost never responsible for damage in transit)

secondly, the warantee does not start for another 3 years, rather it just continues for the remaining duration of the orriginal warantee.

Other Thoughts: in conclusion. I now have a drive which has built up a reputation as being less than reliable and with a shorter warantee, and i find myself strugling over wether to put my OS back on this hard drive, and risk that i may have yet another disk failure in my near future.

Seagate is usually very good as making high capacity drives for cheap, though usually they are nosier than WD's counterparts. As long as you avoid the couple of "bad" models, Seagate drives remain a decent choice.

I am however, dissatisfied with the reliability of this hardware, and the manufacturers commitment to their product. I will avoid their "budget" hard drives in the future.

(after looking around online, it seems these drives do have a high failure rate in the 1-2 year range, i am not alone)
