Intel R1304BTLSHBNR 1U Rack Server Barebone LGA 1155 Intel C204 DDR3

5 out of 5 eggs Great little server with remote management! 06/11/2013

This review is from: Intel R1304BTLSHBNR 1U Rack Server Barebone LGA 1155 Intel C204 DDR3

Pros: Good docs. Good FW support. Good general support. Ivy bridge. Nice remote management (optional extra) is available! Nice price. Lots of Intel tech crammed into one little box.

Cons: UDIMM only, tho that's partly an advantage. (Low latency.)

Other Thoughts: Be careful to order only UDIMM for this guy. Nice remote management is available cheaply. (Optional extra.)

Kingston ValueRAM 16GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1600 Server Memory (Intel Validated ) Model KVR16R11D4/16I
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: ECC, temp sensor, name brand, low load

Cons: none noted

Other Thoughts: Always go ECC for servers and critical systems. Google found that most memory errors are hard errors, which makes ECC even more important because those errors will repeat.

A side benefit is that all ECC DDR3 DIMMs have temperature sensors which allows closed-loop fan speed control if your server supports it. (Get servers with a BMC and good firmware updates for it.) Yes, a server can actually be quieter than an office PC if set up right, or at least, in the same ballpark.

Seagate Constellation ES.2 ST32000645SS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SAS 6Gb/s 3.5

5 out of 5 eggs Nearline SAS alternative to Enterprise SATA 06/11/2013

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.2 ST32000645SS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SAS 6Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: SAS! Nearline SAS for the price of enterprise SATA. These are not full-blown server drives but it's a definite step up from the already higher-quality enterprise SATA. A good way to get a higher quality economical drive.

Cons: None that I've noted.

Other Thoughts: These drives let you buy reasonable SAS hardware for your fancy RAID controller. You don't want to use retail office-PC drives for pro storage. For use with RAID controllers you want drives that quickly return error codes upstream, rather than, say, an office drive that might just try to read the sector forever. Going SAS puts you in the pro level. These nearline-SAS drives are an entry-level excellent compromise on speed, power, and quality. And did I mention they are SAS?! Yay!
