This review is from: Synology DS414 Diskless System Network Storage
Pros: This is an extremely fast and capable NAS. I have had zero glitches or issues of any kind. Synology creates patches to correct any security holes or issues very fast so I know that this will be up to date and secure for a long time. I am using this for a NAS, Web server, Photo Sharing site and a VPN into my home network. This NAS handles all of those services very well and is very speedy at all of them. In fact I can fully saturate my Gigabit connection to the NAS meaning that the NAS is not the bottleneck in performance which is what I was hoping to get. The Synology Hybrid Raid is also awesome since it allows me to start out with a couple of HDD's and I can seamlessly upgrade to more HDD's in the future with no data loss on the array..
Cons: The price is a little high but I guess you do get what you pay for here. Also you cannot add an expansion unit if you run out of space on this NAS.
Other Thoughts: I got this to replace a different brand's NAS that had very terrible firmware and I can tell you that this was the best decision I made and I am very glad I got this Synology NAS. I would highly recommend this brand to anyone and in fact I have a co-worker that got one on my recommendation and is extremely pleased with his as well.READ FULL REVIEW
Pros: This thing vacuums great and helps keep the place clean in-between my normal vacuuming. The schedule is perfect for setting it and having it vacuum the floors for you automatically. The room mapping works awesome and it always finds it way back to recharge.
Cons: It's a little louder than I was hoping (but quitter than a normal vacuum) and the bin fills up fast if you are cleaning a very dirty room. My only real complaint is the edge cleaning abilities. It leaves about a one inch gap near walls that you will have to clean manually. Additionally they don't include very much of the ridiculously expensive magnetic barrier strips. Other than those very minor gripe its an awesome vacuum well worth the cost.
Other Thoughts: I had a couple of issues with my vacuum (short battery life and the plate holding the brush in was loose) I contacted Neato about these issues and they promptly sent me out a new battery and plate. That is awesome service especially on a refurbished vacuum. Once I installed the replacement parts if I didn't know any better I would have figured that they had accidentally sent me a new vacuum.READ FULL REVIEW
This review is from: Lenovo 70A69003NA Diskless System Iomega ix2 Network Storage 2-bay
Pros: I thought the price was good and that the Lenovo name meant quality. My initial impression seemed good until I started trying out the features and found the implementation to be poor.
Cons: This device has very poorly implemented firmware, is extremely slow and Lenovo customer service doesn't care and won't resolve issues.
Here is a list of the issues that I have had with this NAS:
1. The NAS does not handle failed drives well. When I first got this NAS one of the WD red drives I purchased was not functional. Rather than detecting this failure and alerting me the NAS simply took forever to initialize and operated extremely slow. The only way that I found out was to remove the drive from the NAS and install it into my desktop computer. This is an unacceptable failure since most people do not have the ability to perform the in-depth testing required. Furthermore there is no easy way to check the SMART status of a drive without needing special knowhow and tools.
2. NAS is extremely slow. This NAS can only achieve approximately 30MB/s sustained transfer rate of large files to the NAS. This is an unacceptable transfer rate when the drives, the gigabit Ethernet, and my test computer can sustain over 100MB/s transfer. Using the Hardware monitoring utility I can see that this is due to the NAS CPU being at 100% utilization during a large file transfer. Enabling jumbo frames can get a measured 30% file write increase due to the lower CPU usage on the NAS box. While this is still an abysmal transfer rate it is at least usable. Unfortunately this is not an acceptable option due to issue number 3.
3. Features do not work together on the NAS box. Enabling jumbo frames causes the NAS to loose all connectivity to the internet. The email alerting no longer works, the automatic time update no longer works, and the cloud feature no longer works. This means that jumbo frames are poorly implemented at best and completely unusable at worst (my case). Because jumbo frames are entirely unusable the NAS is reverted to the horrible transfer rate of 30MB/second.
I spoke with Lenovo customer service about the jumbo frames and they first blamed the issue on my router (which doesn't make sense because jumbo frames do not work on the internet and when I pointed this out to them they then stated that because this is a consumer NAS they acknowledged that the NAS does not properly implement jumbo frames and that because it is a consumer product they do not intend to correct this issue.
Here is their exact response:
Our Personal Cloud feature does not support jumbo frames. This is not a bug, and we currently have no plans to implement jumbo frames for Personal Cloud. We have found the benefit of jumbo frames to be trivial (standard frames have at worst a 2.72% packet to payload overhead), and the potential detriment to be drastic (ranging from a 15% decrease in throughput to complete incompatibility with some hardware). Personal Cloud is intended to be used by home users, and not in a corporate environment. Most home users do not have the testing know-how to determine if jumbo frames are increasing performance for them.
Other Thoughts: This is a follow-up to my previous review to highlight issues that I have found since my initial review.
If you want to save a few bucks and don't mind a slow NAS with buggy firmware and incomplete network support go ahead and buy this. If you are planning on purchasing this to use the extra features purchase a different brand.
Personally I wish that I would have known these issues and limitations before I purchased the NAS box so I would not be stuck with a slow NAS box that is now out of the Newegg return window.
