The BIG Shuriken 2 is the upgraded version of Big Shuriken with an additional 6 mm heatpipe as well as an additional row of fins. As a result, cooling efficiency could be significantly increased. With 58 mm in height, The BIG Shuriken 2 is compatible with HTPCs (Home Theater Personal Computers) and computer systems with restricted dimensions. In addition, broader compatibility with new generation chipset motherboards was established by inventing F.S.M.B.4 (Flip Mount Super Back-Plate 4) mounting system.

  • newegg Improved cooling performance Compared with its predecessor model, the Big Shuriken 2 is equipped with an additional heatpipe as well as an additional row of fins. Combined with a 2,000 rpm Slip Stream 120 Slim Series fan, higher cooling efficiency could be achieved. With the othodox method of pointing the airflow of the fan towards the motherboard, chipsets and MOS-FETs on VR modules can be cooled simultaneously.
  • newegg Slip Stream 120 Slim PWM Fan The Big Shuriken 2 is equipped with a new Slip Stream 120 Slim PWM fan (2,000 rpm) with small motor hub for better airflow. The fan can be replaced by general 120 mm fans with open corners for screw holes.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Cooler

Pros: Low profile, excellent cooling

Cons: nothing that I can think of

Other Thoughts: Unlike the idiot that gave it one star for not fitting his case due to HIS memory, HIS error and NO PART of the manufacturing of the product, searching for a few reviews of a product BEFORE you buy would have told you that. This is an EXCELLENT cooler, really quiet, expected from Schythe and would recommend this 100% to anyone that follows simple directions.

Pros: The heatsink itself cools well. The base is polished to a mirror shine, and has a good level surface for making contact with the processor. The fan is as quiet as they come; I can't speak to its longevity, as I haven't had the product long enough to make a fair judgment. For a mini-ITX or HTPC case, these are the kind of things you want.

Cons: The unit does not have as much clearance for RAM as I thought; this would not be an issue if you choose memory without tall heatsinks and install it first, except for one thing.

Mounting this unit in a Socket 1155 system at least, is awful. I've built PCs for nearing twenty years, and getting the heatsink secure without breaking a mainboard is difficult. Considering that the heatsink needs to be mounted when the mainboard is not yet installed inside the case, I could think of several methods that could have been engineered that would have worked as well without being so difficult or risky. To avoid the risk of breakage, I removed the RAM after several attempts at installation, and then found I didn't have enough clearance to put it in once the unit was installed, and had to loosen the heatsink to get the memory installed. At that point, I still could only use two of the four memory sockets due to not wanting to remove the heatsink fully and try again (note: if you have four sockets and want to use them all, do now, otherwise, you'll need to remove the mainboard at your next RAM upgrade).

The instructions are very busy, and I'd rate them as average in explaining the task of mounting the heatsink. I went mainly by the pictures, as the directions were tiny and limited.

Other Thoughts: I ordered one of these for a media center PC project using an Intel Core i3-3225 processor and an Intel DH67BL micro-ATX mainboard. I needed something that would fit within a height-restricted case, do a good job of cooling, and be reasonably quiet.

I don't know how many more of these will make American shores, as Scythe USA has ceased operations (I believe Scythe Japan is still up and running). The unit is certainly improved at cooling over an Intel stock heatsink/fan, and if you have a small case and want to use a Core i5 or i7 or an AMD processor above 65w, this is still probably your best choice. However, if you have a low-energy CPU, have more space to dedicate, or don't need whisper-quiet cooling, there are probably better choices out there. If the mounting mechanism was modified, this would be a great unit, and I could easily give it another egg, maybe two.

4 out of 5 eggsNice fan

Pros: Wasn't that difficult to install. A little nerve wracking with the backplate though since you have to handle your mobo awkwardly and we all know what happens if a stray scratch appears on your mobo. . .

Keeps the CPU quiet and cooling is more than adequate for my 65w quad core i5.

Cons: On my mobo the cooler obstructed the 4 pin CPU connector which made getting plugged in a bit of a hassle.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy

Pros: Low profile, low noise, cooling more than adequate for size.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Video transcoding with stock Intel i7-870 cooler using 8 cores at 80% always crashed due to overheat. This one keeps all cores at 65 C or less in a 20 C room. No fit issues on Gigabyte mini-ATX either.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not fit Asrock A75M-ITX

Pros: Large fan, 5 heatpipes, large surface area, quiet

Cons: The cooler's X-style mounting backplate has extra wide "feet" at the ends of the X for compatibility with a wide set of mobos. Unfortunately, the Asrock has surface mounted chips on the mobo underside, and one of the feet sits right on top of one of the chips. This makes it impossible to secure the backplate properly or seat the cooler to the CPU.

Other Thoughts: Couldn't really properly test it due to lack of fit.

2 out of 5 eggsFine, but...

Pros: Looks nice, low profile, quiet.

Cons: I was installing this on an AMD board and was tightening down the screws holding the backplate to the mounting bracket (these are half-threaded screws) when one of the screws sheared off leaving half in the bracket. I wasn't applying any ridiculous amount of pressure, and was surprised by the result.
I contacted Scythe USA and they said they're completely sold-out and don't carry replacement parts.
Needless to say I'm pretty upset, even if I can find a suitable screw, the bracket has a very small bit of threaded screw broken off in it, and so I'd probably need a new bracket. There aren't many other products that will cool well and fit in my HTPC case.

3 out of 5 eggsMicro ATX Boards + Tall Ram = Bad Combo

Pros: Solid Construction, Low Profile, Quiet

Cons: Won't fit many micro ATX x79 boards if you fill all 4 ram slots with ram with heat spreaders, hard to access screws and a ridiculous tiny wrench tool to screw them in with

Other Thoughts: I was hoping to use this in a Thermaltake Armor micro-atx small form factor case as you only have 80mm headroom for a cpu fan cooler but you ideally want it much shorter so y our cpu fan isn't pressed up right against the intake fan of your PSU.

Was using a Maximum IV Gene board and the Shuriken is too wide if you are going to fill all 4 ram slots and use taller RAM sticks with heat spreaders like the Ripjaws or Vengeance.

Also screwing this in is one of the biggest pain in the **** I've ever had with installing a CPU cooler. It's got a wide fan and the screws to mount it are well underneath it and they give you a riduculous tiny wrench to do it with. They should have made them hex screws and given you an allen wrench like mini tool in which to screw them down. Also have fun trying to install this sucker on a board with large capacitor heatsinks as you won't have much room to even get access to the screws let alone try and use that silly wrench on them.

5 out of 5 eggspretty good

Pros: Kept a AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz at 33C at startup, did not try it with stock fan, used GELID Solutions FN-FW12BPL-18 which at this point I think was overkill. You need their special back plate to mount no way around it. There was just barely enough room to mount the memory.

Cons: Not a 1 U by far, might be a 2u compatable cooler.

Other Thoughts: get something else...anything else.
