Level One answers the question of "When is a Print Server more than a Print Server?" with their FPS-3003. Yes, this two-USB-port unit will handle two printers or MFPs for that matter. But, it will also work with scanners and storage devices including hard drives, flash drives or card readers.

Unlike many print servers out there that let you mange them with a web based interface but make you set it up through a Windows utility, Level One lets you set their unit up and manage it through a web interface. This makes it great for Linux/Unix or Mac environments where a Windows PC might not be available. Here you have a cross-platform tool that'll keep both sides of the OS argument happy.

  • newegg Share Two USB Devices The LevelOne FPS-3003 features two USB 1.1 ports and one 10/100Mbps RJ45 port to share USB printers and MFP (Multifunction Printer) over your home or office network. USB storage devices such as USB hard disks, flash drives and card readers are also supported to build a simple network storage system.
  • newegg Built-in FTP Server Function The LevelOne FPS-3003 features a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server function for convenient high-speed file transfer.
  • newegg Web-based Management The LevelOne FPS-3003 features a user-friendly, web-based user interface for easy configuration and maintenance.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: seems to get the job done. much easier setup compared to other print servers i have used.

Cons: only problem is with windows, add the printers as a "local" printer instead of a "network" printer.

3 out of 5 eggsStrong/Cool feature set, but also a "time sinkhole"

Pros: Excellent feature set. Excellent connectivity and setup options. Many protocols supported. Quick setup via the web-based interface and/or the configuration software. 8Mb Ram Buffer; biggest I could find available. 5-Star Newegg shipping and delivery!

Cons: Have had a horrible time getting my PC to see the printer and work, through the FPS-3003. High price to pay, with abysmally horrible telephone support.

Recommended for those with a firm-to-strong understanding of network protocols, setting up network printer shares and how to configure them.

Other Thoughts: I've installed a number of HP JetDirect based network printers with no trouble. This was my first time to try and "upgrade" a Canon MF5550 to connect via network.

If you purchase this device, keep in mind that this is a PRINT SERVER... just like the name says. The FPS-3003 shows up on your network as a standard device in a workgroup configuration. You then point to it and connect to the printer. You will need to configure users and "log in" to the printserver before you will be able to see the printer. This is what tripped me up.

Make sure to DL the full manual from LevelOne. Much better than the included quick-install: Peace, Out.
