Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Near DOA
Pros: It arrived quickly, Newegg had a good price on this faster spinning laptop drive
Cons: As soon as the drive was powered it started this very loud clunk-clunk-clunk and the disk utility on my Mac was unable to initialize it. Attempts to clone the main Mac drive to this one for different reasons each time and the clunking keeps coming back so it would appear that the drive is defective.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 You CAN use TCG OPAL without Motherboard support
Pros: I don't own this HDD. But I have implemented OPAL on SSD without motherboard support. What follows is directions to install & configure a software that takes care of OPAL locking / unlocking and chain loads your actual OS. I use it with windows 8 and it works fantastic.
Cons: Please note that you must power down your machine / HDD for the system to ask you for the password. No password is asked on reboots. The HDD must lose power for it to ask OPAL password again. Not a con, just the way it is.
Other Thoughts: This is just a copy / paste of my notes. Please understand that these are from my SSD install. The outputs that you see from the commands would be different. Replace <password> with your actual password. Please take backup first so you do not lose data because of a mistake, setup errors or bugs etc. Also, it is better to follow the directions from the http://www.r0m30.com/msed website. What follows is a summary of what I did to get setup.

* http://www.r0m30.com/msed
* Test the PBA; worked fine: http://www.r0m30.com/msed/documentation/managing/testpba-1
* Copy the directory locally & install using elevated privilege
c:> cd C:\tmp\msed\msed\x64\Release
c:> msed --scan
\\.\PhysicalDrive0 12 Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB EMT01B6Q
\\.\PhysicalDrive1 No HGST HTS541010A9E680 JA0OA590
* gunzip the PBA image if needed; then,
c:> msed --initialsetup <password> \\.\PhysicalDrive0
* Since this is a boot drive
c:> msed --loadPBAimage <password> biospba-<release>.img \\.\PhysicalDrive0
c:> msed --setMBREnable on <password> \\.\PhysicalDrive0
* Enable locking
c:> msed --enableLockingRange 0 <password> \\.\PhysicalDrive0
* Power off the computer to lock the drive. Power the computer on. The PBA should ask for
your password, unlock the drive and chain-load the real OS on the drive you booted from

* If you want to turn off Locking and the PBA:
c:> msed --disableLockingRange 0 <password> \\.\PhysicalDrive0
c:> msed --setMBREnable off <password> \\.\PhysicalDrive0

* Removing the drive from OPAL management
The steps outlined below will allow you to turn off the opal locking and return
the drive to the manufactured default state without erasing any data managed by
the global locking range

1. revert the locking SP.
msed --revertnoerase <Admin1Password> \\.\PhysicalDrive0

2. verify that the locking SP has been deactivated
msed --query \\.\PhysicalDrive0

look at the query output and make certain that the Locking section shows lockingEnabled=N
--------
Locking function (0x0002)
Locked = N, LockingEnabled = N, LockingSupported = Y, <snip>
---------

If the query does not show lockingEnabled=N DO NOT CONTINUE with the next step, if you do
all your data will be erased.

3. msed --reverttper <SIDpassword> \\.\PhysicalDrive0
When this is finished the drive will be in a non-opal managed state. This would allow you
to do anything that you could have done before starting OPAL management under OPAL.
You can also reinitiate OPAL management if you wish.

Categories > Laptop Internal Hard Drives > Western Digital > Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000CHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Enterprise Hard Drive Bare Drive

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Another Correction
Pros: -Extremely fast
-Fair price for what you get
-Large storage capacity
-It is and it does exactly what the advertisement says "Enterprise" should automatically tell you "for servers and workstations, not for laptops"
Cons: -Does not come with the WD Icepack or other mounting hardware, but it's a bare drive, so no egg docked.
Other Thoughts: I also own an older, first generation VelociRaptor with SATA III and a 74GB capacity. I bought it for next to nothing just to give the 10,000 RPM thing a try. I was amazed by the drive's ability to keep up with, and in the case of re-write speeds, surpass my (older) SSD's performance. These drives rock! But the day of the workstation HDD is rapidly coming to a close as the new interfaces such as M.2 PCIe 3.0 and SATA Express are allowing SSDs to reach astounding speeds and high capacities at affordable prices.

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Novel idea. Poor implementation
Pros: -Good idea
Cons: -Drivers
Manufacturer Response:Hey There Ryne,
Thanks for the time reviewing the Black2 dual drive. The Black2 is designed as a 2.5 inch form factor upgrade for Windows 7 through 8.1 and Mac OS X 10.9 and later laptops from model years 2013 and later. It is important Laptop PC’s BIOS supports an AHCI SATA controller and the drive is not improperly recognized as a RAID device within the BIOS. It is recommended checking with the motherboard manufacturer for BIOS and Chipset updates prior to installing the Black2 drive. Another important fact to know, nVidia drivers are not supported, and will generate a completion code #53 when attempting to unlock the HDD portion of the drive. On these rare occasions, it may be best to install the Windows operating system on a machine with Intel AHCI Sata controller and move the drive back to the nVidia environment after unlocking the HDD portion. Pros: 2TB in 2.5" form factor, highest ever
Cheap price for the capacity/size
