4 out of 5 eggsAsus quality at a good price

Pros: Sata express
Lots of sata ports
SOLID heatsinks
AMAZING bios
Good color scheme
Great hardware for the price

Cons: Not enough USB ports
Should be blacked out instead of gold
Not-so-good sound quality
Lame looking SLI bridge (come on guys)

Other Thoughts: I chose this motherboard based on other asus boards ive owned in the past. I needed a board to go with a black and blue color scheme, and this was the closest offering i could find that would match. This board has a great BIOS and amazing overclocking headroom. The heatsinks are heavy and do a great job. The fan headers are PWM and there are plenty of them in good locations. There is a USB 3.0 hub connector on the bottom of the motherboard so you dont have to use the stupid side connector like most other boards.

The one major complaint i have is the so-called "crystal sound" is not very good. It sounds like every other average motherboard integrated audio chip. If you are seriously considering a motherboard in this range for these new onboard sound offerings, you'd be better off buying a board without sound in mind and going with a separate dedicated sound solution.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsStability Issues

Pros: Inexpensive for the funcitonality

Cons: Not stable at all

Other Thoughts: To those having stability issues:
1. Disable the sound card in the bios. This helped with a lot of my issues (buy a usb sound card or something =/ , or new mobo....)
2. Turn off EVERYTHING in the bios that claims to lower power consumption or make power consumption more effecient. I would make a list of all the things i disabled but it would be rather long...

After doing the above my setup was much more stable, although it ran at a slightly higher temperature.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

2 out of 5 eggsUnstable MOBO

Pros: Somewhat cheap board for a lot of functionality

Cons: The board definitely has some stability issue. I have replaced every part besides the motherboard and my computer resets at random times.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this board

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am with this motherboard. With a core i7-4790K (4GHz) chip installed, I'm getting about a 3% performance bump over 3770K chip on a P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3 board. I suspect ASUS is so concerned about the power its consuming, it may be throttling back even though my program is single threaded and not causing a heat problem.

Cons: This board is a huge disappointment.

Other Thoughts: I shouldn't have to overclock to get 4GHz performance from this chip.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I do apologize that you a fantastic esperience with your motherboard. What type of benchmarking are you performing to receive your results? 5 out of 5 eggsGreat features for the money!

Pros: It's this simple. If you want a motherboard with good features, plenty of flexibility, and the potential to overclock if needed WITHOUT paying for a "Gaming Motherboard" look no further. This product is well built, does what you need it to do, and doesn't cost as much. End of story.

Cons: UEFI BIOS could be easier to use, as in simplified and with greater definitions of the features

Other Thoughts: Using a i7-4970k on this build, and it seems to be holding up. No issues so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Board!

Pros: This was my first build out for myself and everything in the board was clearly marked and came together pretty quickly. I did have one issue, see below, but the error codes helped me figure it out.

Cons: Download the instructions and read the Ram specs -carefully- the ram speed and vendor i bought first was supported just not the specific part No. and i couldn't get it to function, I had to swap it out.

Other Thoughts: Lots of room to grow on this board...

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Buy!

Pros: I love this MB. This is my first Asus MB and I gotta say I am glad I got it! It worked out of the box and I have zero issues with it. I have read that some people are having stability issues with it and they had to update the BIOS, but I am not one of them.

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS messed up on this one.....

Pros: The board is nice. I like just about everything about it. To many great features and options to shake a stick at.

Cons: When I got this board I was extremely busy so it just was sitting there in the box for about three weeks. I finally got around to putting everything together and everything was great. About a week later I finally got some free time to sit down and really get at it. I like to game hard and stream my action while i'm at it. Got everything fired up, stream was live, music was playing, switched over to the game and I heard some static. I continued to play and the static was getting worse and worse to the point where all audio would just completely cut out... By this time the 30 day return policy is up.. :(

Got in touch with the tech support. Did all the tests. Got to the point where I had to take out my GPU and just run video off the Motherboard. ect. ect. Send it to ASUS and get it back about three weeks later. Still the exact same problem... Send it back again and I got it back in I thinks less than two weeks this time. STILL the same problem. Contact ASUS AGAIN... ask what going on and I get back:

"the unit was determined to have either a compnent damaged/version error or chip failed. Usually when that error appears they reflash/update the Bios."

REALLY your making me waste my money to send you my Motherboard so that you can flash the bios!? I could do that at home!...

TL:DR

Sound card is jacked up and ASUS is failing to rectify the problem. Wasting my time and my money! Forcing me to keep my PC apart when 75% of my work is conducted on it.

Been a LONG time ASUS supporter. This absolute terrible customer support experience has knocked them way down in my eyes.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsUnstable

Pros: Seems fast and flexible. Amazing BIOS setup program. Multiple ways to update BIOS.

Cons: Versions of Ubuntu prior to 14.04 will not work out of the box because of this boards Intel I218-V chip.

This board is unstable even with the latest 1304 BIOS released 5 Aug 2014.

The instability seemed to wreak havoc with the other *wired* devices on my network.

Other Thoughts: I never buy "gamer" boards like Asus anymore; only Intel-brand mobo's for the last decade. Unfortunately Intel does not make a board for their OWN 4790K processor! C'mon Intel!

I really had high hopes for this board. I really just wanted any board that would Just-Work (tm). No overclocking, no external graphic cards, no water coolers, latest 1304 BIOS released 5 Aug 2014, F5 Load Optimized Defaults. I just want _simplicity_, _stability_ and speed of the 4790K for financial calculations, not games. (I used to be gamer in the 1990's and was into overclocking and actually had TWO 3dfx's Voodoo dual SLI for playing the original DOOM until Nvidia came and ate their lunch with a single card, but I digress..)

The first issue came up when I tried to boot into Ubunto 12.04. No network connectivity at all. Even the Ubuntu 12.04 boot CD cannot access the network with this board. A little research revealed its because of no drivers for the Intel I218-V LAN controller on this board. Good news is, it is supported by the very latest Ubuntu 14.04. I wasn't ready to upgrade and its a pain but, okay, I can live with upgrading the OS along with this new board and processor.

After a clean format and install of 14.04, I could actually access the network. Unfortunately, put to any kind of heavy load results in daily lockups. CPU temps running fine in the 70's and 80's (C) under full load (with an occasional spikes into the 90's IIRC).

The lockup problems seem to be related to the I218-V networking because, upon finding a locked machine in the morning (sometimes with a frozen video image, sometimes with no video signal at all), I also found that ALL of my WIRED network devices on the same network were no longer accessible at all. Only a cold reboot of the router would allow them to regain access.

Amazingly, even when all the wired devices were in this disconnected state, the *wireless* devices could still connect to the internet through the router, but not to any of the wired devices. And none of the wired devices could connect to anything (the internet or each other) until the router was rebooted.

This is why I don't buy gamer boards like Asus. After messing around for over a week, now have to rip this out, pack it up, ship it back to newegg. That's just the way it goes sometimes when you build your own, but I never had a single problem with Intel-brand board..

I've decided to try one of the Gigabyte boards which advertises with "Tested with 168 Hours Server Grade Testing". Hey, at least they ADVERTISE about stability, instead of about overclocking and gaming. Wish me luck..
