New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Up to eight “Piledriver” cores ensure unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 8-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability.  Unrivaled performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 8 Piledriver cores The native 8-core desktop processor delivers unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance with the new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

5 out of 5 eggsrack another one up for AMD

Pros: Overclocks nicely. you'll barely notice a temp difference in the chip.
With 8 cores, the chip multitasks very nicely.
Waming performance is a huge plus. The thing shreds everything I throw at it.

Cons: chews power, but that is to be expected.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat processor

Pros: Great speed, runs fairly quietly, has never overheated, comes with thermal paste already applied

Cons: The ONLY reason why I rated it 4/5 stars and not 5/5 is because when I was installing it, I really had to crank down hard on the clip to get it set. I actually had to watch several YouTube videos of people having the exact same problem. I was just worried I'd damage my motherboard, but fortunately I didn't.

5 out of 5 eggsFun for overclocking

Pros: Not too expensive, easily overclocks from stock frequency. I have mine running at 4.8GHz stable on an Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0. I have achieved 5.0 GHz but it's not all that stable. I am running an H80i with dual Cougar fans and this does a decent job, but if you can fit a better cooler like the H100i or do custom loop water cooling, do it. Cooling the NB or VRM heatsink helps as well as having air blowing on the back of the socket, as well as the little chips under the VRMs (if your board has these).

Cons: You definitely want a good cooler for serious overclocking.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat performance at a much lower price point.

Pros: Cheaper than an Intel solution.
Awesome gaming performance at a much lower price point.

Cons: Stock tiny fan gets loud as it tries its best to cool the heat sink.
Runs a bit warm under load, 50~60 degree Celsius.

Other Thoughts: Spend the extra cash and get an aftermarket cooler.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Value for Your Money

Pros: Very good processor. It handles multiple tasks with ease. Games run flawlessly on it. After much study about reviews, prices, etc... This one gets you the most for cheapest. An Intel i7 would be a bit better, but this is also $400 less.

Cons: Box it came in was dirty.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my first PC build and everything is running great.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD FX-8320

Pros: This processor is quite amazing and I bought it for my brothers gaming PC build. While 8 cores seems overkill for a gaming PC you can't beat the price. Purchase 9/30/2014 for $139.99.

Cons: The only con for this CPU is the stock cooler. While the cooler does technically work and keeps the temp low enough at max load it is just way too loud. Expect to get a new one if you don't want your ears to bleed. I ended up getting the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

5 out of 5 eggsSorry Intel

Pros: Bought this for a gaming and video editing build that I put together about 4 months ago. 8 cores might seem high for gaming but when you're rendering video in 1080p at 60 FPS in maximum depth, you'll be happy you bought this CPU. I've never hit over 70% usage and always run at 30 Celsius with an aftermarket cooler. (I have 8 case fans running negative pressure) I could probably get even cooler but I may have over-applied my thermal paste.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: It's not that I have anything against Intel, but AMD made me a huge fan with their prices and unlocked CPUs. Maybe if I had $500+ to blow on a processor I would change my mind. But I've run both on different systems and stand by my purchase. I plan on overclocking but I'm going to watercool my system first.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful

Pros: Very fast, 8 cores. Overclockable

Cons: Lots of heat, which is to be expected.

Other Thoughts: I have mine running at stock speeds as I haven encountered any task I would need to OC it for.
