5 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good

Pros: Small size
Decent screen
Great battery life
Capable processor
Easy to upgrade

Cons: At this price, hard to find any. See other thoughts, below.

Other Thoughts: I've only had it about a week so far, but I've been impressed. For the price, I would expect everything to be cheap. The components certainly aren't high-end, but most seem decent. The only parts that seem cheap are the track pad and maybe the hard drive (320 GB and slow). The processor is snappy, the screen is nice, and the body is solid. It has all ports you'd want and the HD and RAM are easily upgradeable. I wiped Windows 8 off and loaded Ubuntu. With the screen turned down, bluetooth off, but wireless on, its telling me 10+ hours of battery life. Obviously, that won't happen with any actual usage, but its looking like 6-7 hours of normal usage is certain. The little Ivy Bridge celeron runs cool and quiet and should be up to any task that isn't too demanding.

So far the only hitch with loading Ubuntu (12.04) was that the screen would not dim via the keyboard shortcut or options in the OS. A quick google search and grub edit solved it.

I will definitely add RAM, but am on the fence about putting in an SSD. It would be great, but would also add significantly to the price of this little laptop.

So far, very pleased with this purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic starting point

Pros: Price to performance (scores 1600+ in passmark cpumark)
Gigabit Ethernet
Simple 1 screw bottom panel to add memory, replace drive.
6-cell 5000mah battery
Intel 6235 a/b/g/n dual channel wifi card
Nice matte screen
Runs very cool
Overall build quality is good; sure it's made of plastic, but it doesn't crackle like the cheap stuff, those spoiled by apple aluminum unibody stuff should stay away.
Windows 7 drivers on the website

Cons: 6-cell battery protrudes out the bottom of the laptop.
windows 8
No USB 3.0
UEFI bios
No msata slot (I see the traces for it though)
shiny screen bezel (why couldn't they make that matte too?)
smallish chiclet keyboard keys
Trying to download drivers from acer's website was SLOW...

Other Thoughts: Purchased this for my little sister who's b-day is coming up to replace her 4 yr old gateway netbook.

Just got done "downgrading" my copy of windows 8 to windows 7, UEFI bios makes it a pain to do, but I knew it would be going into this. The windows 7 install disk would not create an MBR partition, would only create a GPT partition which doesn't play with some of my "disk utilities". Created a basic install on another computer and cloned it on to this one. Problem solved. Don't forget to switch to "legacy bios" mode in the BIOS when you install windows 7 or the system won't recognize your SSD.

Pulled out the 320gb HD that it came with and replaced it with a 128gb samsung 830 SSD I had lying around. It doesn't seem to like the samsung 830 as much as some of my other machines did.

Plan on getting another 4gb stick of memory to complement the first 4gb stick it came with. (yes, they left a memory slot open)

When installing an SSD, replacements should be of the 7mm thick variety. The standard 9.5mm thick ones do fit, but it makes the bottom plate bulge a bit.

Overall, complaint were minor considering the price. The biggest issue right now is the protruding battery, which I contemplated replacing with a 4-cell model. The actual Acer branded ones typically run $50 to $90 from e-tailers or online auction places.
