Empowers You to Save Hundreds on Electric Bills

Electricity bills are rising. Now you can cut down on costs and find out what appliances are actually worth keeping plugged in. Simply connect these appliances to the Kill A Watt, and it will assess how efficient they really are. The large LCD display counts consumption by the kilowatt-hour, the same as your local utility. You can calculate your electrical expenses by the day, week, month, even an entire year. Also check the quality of your power by monitoring voltage, line frequency, and power factor. Now you will know if it is time for a new refrigerator or if that old air conditioner is still saving you money. Kill A Watt can help you reduce your power bill and will help find power-wasting appliances so you are able to decide whether it is worth keeping them plugged in. For standard 115 VAC appliances only, 15 amps maximum, 125VAC maximum.

Find Out How Much Electricity You're Using

The U.S Department of Energy reports that 20% of our electric bills come from items that are left plugged in when they are not in use, or items that are in standby mode. With the Kill A Watt P4400 we can monitor the energy eaters in our homes and cut down our electric bills at the same time. Plug whatever item you want into the device and it will tell you the efficiency of that item by displaying the kilowatt per hour. This device will help you determine which items are costing you the most to run. The Kill A Watt also calculates voltage, line frequency, current, and power factor. You can calculate your electric bill before you even receive it from the electric company.

Test The Quality of Your Home's Power

But measuring appliance consumption is just the tip of the iceberg. Because it can monitor Voltage (Volt) and line frequency it can also test if an outlet is working, or evaluate the quality of the electrical power provided by your utility company. It can detect voltage drops around the house, help to predict brownout conditions or to make sure a new home's outlets are in working condition before escrow closes.

4 out of 5 eggsP3 Kill A Watt Electricity Load Meter and Monitor

Pros: Easy to use
Seems to be very accurate
Cheap

Cons: The display can be a bit had to see with out good light.
Perhaps some kind of built in back-light would be a nice upgrade

5 out of 5 eggsStill working great after 2 years

Pros: Picked up 2 of these - even keep one at work for the occasional diagnosis of a variety of equipment - computer or otherwise.
Very easy to use - some people may need to look up what some functions/displays mean. Can even plug a powerbar/surge-bar into it to see what a whole entertainment center is using when "off" or while in use. Can be very helpful if you need to find vampire devices (not an issue in my area, but is still interesting to see - changed some things to work off of a surge-bar that uses a single device as the master - it turns on the other plugs when its used so the unusually high draw items - even when off - don't suck up power they really don't need to)

Cons: as others mentioned, the LCD isn't perfect, but for the price its more than reasonable - smart phone flashlight to the rescue when trying to see this plugged into a dark corner since there is no backlight.

5 out of 5 eggsMeasures correctly

Pros: Helped a lot with figuring out which devices were draining power around the house. Didn't realize my PC was eating up as much as it did; ended up getting a low 30w PC instead of my power hungry desktop.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsVery Useful for Computer Builders

Pros: So I bought this load monitor because I wasn't sure if I could SLI my current rig (then at the time an i5 6600k OCed and a single MSI GTX 970 also OCed). On the one hand, I kept reading that PSU requirements from the official manufacturer manuals detailing a 750w PSU was inadequate; that I should purchase a more powerful PSU to be on the safe side. Lots of online forums also suggested the same. Meanwhile, plenty of other experienced techies online argued otherwise, and that a 750w PSU was more than adequate for an SLI configuration (especially if it is a quality PSU from reputable manufacturers ie. Seasonic, Corsair, EVGA etc.) But after buying this handy gadget, and carefully testing everything out one component at a time, I could very easily see that my SLI rig could handle both GPUs and CPU at load and rarely go over 500 watts. It was such a relief!
PS. I also have an SSD, HDD, five fans, and an optical drive sucking up energy, just to give you all a better idea of what kind of wattage requirements your PSU might provide.

Cons: The LCD display definitely sucks. Very hard to see the numbers display, especially at an angle. But this is a very minor, minor quibble.

Other Thoughts: I would absolutely recommend this product to PC builders out there who want better ideas about what their system builds are truly using. Especially for anyone uncertain about pursuing multi-gpu configurations.

5 out of 5 eggsGood power/energy monitor

Pros: The unit works as soon as you plug it in. No tricky menu. You really don't need to read the manual.

The accuracy appear to be good, that means you can trust the results.

Cons: It has not back-up battery so if you lose power during you "test" period you lose whatever information you were looking for. Usually not a problem unless you live like me in a rural area with frequent power outages.

It could be good with a built-in light as you often put it in a dark corner and the screen can be hard to read (not a big deal if you have a flash light).

Other Thoughts: A highly recommended product if you are looking for the energy consuming electric appliances in your home or as work.

If I need a second unit I would buy this again.

It would be nice if it could monitor 208/240 volts appliances as well.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy way to calculate usage

Pros: I used this meter extensively recently when I was trying to estimate how much power was being wasted by vampire circuits and to spread loads out to various series mode power filters. It's paid for itself several times over.

Cons: It's not a con, but I wish there was the ability to save the data onto a flash drive. I used a pad and pencil instead.

Other Thoughts: I used the meter to calculate the loads of various electronics throughout the house for when I made the switch from MOV based surge diversion to series mode power filters.

I also used the meter to calculate loads that I wanted to have plugged into a UPS so that I can estimate run times the best.

I use series-mode power filters in the house and have plugged MOV surge protectors that have a Master/Controlled outlets with a computer display, speakers and printers plugged into the controlled outlets. The strip that I use has a sensitivity adjustment threshold so that when the computer is in sleep or powered down all the controlled outlets power down the equipment.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked very well. Suspected My freezer was not working properly. I plugged the load meter in line with the freezer for 30 days and found out it was indeed using too much power. Started searching and found that the thermostat was sticking sometimes causing energy use to go up. Kill A Watt has paid for itself!

Cons: No cons on this device
