Rating + 5 GREAT

Pros: This thing is nice. Running @ 2.5 (had to drop multiplyer to run my gskill @ 500mhz) No problems with multitasking very stable @2.5

Cons: Sometimes games are a little choppy now but setting the affinity works great. Not really happy with the stock cooler but oh well what can youdo but buy another one. Not that impressed with its performance over my 3700 @ 2.5 but cannot really complain too much because this proc feels very solid and stable(but thats AMD for you)

Other Thoughts: Running on my epox nforce4 ultra board with 2 gigs of Gskill(please get more gskill pc4000 newegg)my x850xt is my bottleneck get the ati utility that manages the processing because some games will be a little choppy (NEW EGG = AWESOME)

Rating + 5 A Screamer

Pros: This processor rocks. I upgraded from an Athlon 64 3000+/motherboard. This processor shows me what my BFG 7900GS PCI-E video card can do. Every game I throw at it runs smooth as silk. Gaming is such a pleasure now. Call of Duty 2 runs like a dream with everything max'd, same with Oblivion. DVD Shrink performance is superb.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that I didn't upgrade to this processor sooner.

Other Thoughts: Buy this now, while still available as socket 939 systems are a dying breed these days.

Pros: Put chip in, make sure heat synch is on correctly, no problems!!!

Pros: Decent speed and overclocks well without much increase in heat. Stock fan and heatsink are more than sufficient. For me, even under conditions of heavy gaming, it only reaches around 45 degrees C.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Lower price than the 4800+ but with about the same performance, also overclocks to greater speeds than the 4800+ is capable of when overclocked. Be sure to download the latest drivers and the amd dual core optimizer if you're planning on gaming.

Rating + 5 Tormenter

Pros: Torment, that graph can be displayed either as a single combined or double graph per cpu. It's just a view setting. Open Task Manager, View, CPU history and then select "one graph, all cpu" or "one graph both cpu."

Cons: Windows XP, any flavor, recognizes Dual Cores on one physical processor.

Other Thoughts: Glad to spread the knowledge, happy holidays!

Pros: Godsown Drunk, this processor won't work with the DFI Lanparty UT because that mobo is an AM2 socket and this processor is a 939, but it will with the other one.

Cons: Don't have it, just responding to somebody else.

Pros: nice.. upgraded from a 1.7 ghz processor to this, and OC'd to 2.7. It shattered my mind. havn't been able to get above 40c yet.

Cons: didn't have any liquid silver when I installed my heatsink so I don't feel 100% optimized

Other Thoughts: With all my new gear it took 10 minutes to install XP. My dad looked on in amazement!

Rating + 5 Awesome little chip

Pros: The price/performance ratio is good now. I paid nearly 1k for this almost a year ago. It's fast, cool, and able to keep up with everything I throw at it.

Cons: The only bad thing I can say is that I can't unlock the multiplier.

Other Thoughts: If you've still got an early s939/DDR rig and want to upgrade, any of the Athlon X2 CPUs will be a breath of fresh air until the next big CPU development forces a mobo upgrade. The difference between single- and dual-core is simply astounding. You won't regret it.

If you're building new (or upgrading from an older socket), skip this and get the sAM2/DDR2 versions.

Rating + 4 Good cpu to hold you over for a bit.

Pros: I don't notice much of a difference in gaming from my 3700+, but in media apps such as:burning dvds, virus scans, installing products, it has been much much quicker. Prices are dropping as newegg is trying to rid their stock of socket 939 for the new socket types, So if you don't feel like upgrading for just a bit longer, grab one of these before they are all gone.

Cons: Was pretty hard to install. I had to reformat because my computer would only recognize one core.

Other Thoughts: Called microsoft and they said that both cores are being recognized and in the performance graph of task manager is was combining them. That is garbage. When you reformat, it will ask you to press F6 to install raid drivers, press F5 instead. Then select multicore cpu. If there are not two graphs in the perfomance windows task manager, it is only using one of them, even if it recognizes both.

Rating + 5 Smoooootttthhhhhhhh

Pros: This is such a nice processor. I put this in a new build, and the results were staggering. I reinstalled WoW and it took 30 minutes, WHILE playing CS 1.6 (kept at max of 60.0 fps for smoothness), and WHILE compressing a 2 gig video into RAR file. All of this with not getting processor usage above 15% , accept for the occasional jump, but it maintained about 10%. At idle temperature, I'm running about 29-30 degrees Celsius, and at full load (pretty much what I was doing before with WoW, CS, and the RAR) it was a maximum of 36 degrees Celsius. The Fan is wonderful, it works well with a case with good ventilation. The heatsink is a work of art, and keeps the temp down very well. I'm running it in a Thermaltake Tsunami, which has 2 120mm fans and a 90(maybe 80?) so it's got really good ventilation, which is why the temp is so low. I woke up this morning to find idle temps at 28 degrees Celsius, which is phenomenal (mind you it was in a cold house all night, but CONTINUED IN CONS

Cons: CONTINUED FROM PROS (lol) but it was working all night installing WoW updates and such, so it good to see something that costs a fair amount, do so much more than you'd expect.

This Processor has NO CONS. IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!!

Other Thoughts: Buy it!! NOW!

Pros: Still love this processor. JS, go to their website and it's the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer.

Cons: Got the Dual-Core Optimizer and I've got no issues with any of my games. BF2, NWN, COD, HL1, MOH, Jedi Outcast.

Other Thoughts: Dual-Core Optimizer, search for it on their site or G@@g1e it.

Hope that helps

Pros: I upgraded from a 3200+ 2.0 ghz to this. It rocks!! All of my FPS went up especially in Quake 4(Multi threaded). I also love the ability to run a virus scan and play a game at the same time. Multitasking at it's best, I love it !!!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Installed very easley. Just plugged it in and windows did the rest.

Rating + 4 Excellent Value/Upgrade Path

Pros: I decided to go with this CPU in the socket 939 package over the Intel e6600 (which is a bit faster on floating point math, and about 25% faster on integer math), since this configuration would allow me to re-use a sizeable investment I already have in DDR RAM (2 GB of PC3200). I'm upgrading to near-e6600 performance (at least for floating point), for about half the cost.

Cons: Limited selection of motherboards, as socket 939's are on their way out. If you buy one of these CPUs, buy a backup motherboard (and store it properly), as socket 939 motherboards will be getting more and more rare.

Rating + 5 Great processor, but Duo pawns the X2's by nearly 30%

Pros: Great chip for the price, although I get them at cost at work. ;)

Cons: The truth is, however, that the Duo absolutely smokes this processor. Intel has really jumped ahead of AMD with their Duo. I build high-end gaming rigs ($5-10K) and we get all the latest stuff before it is released to the market. I am no Intel fanboy either, its just the facts.

Pros: Good processor, owned this form 4 months now, no problems. I upgraded from an A64 3200+ and it has a very notable speed increase in the games I play (WOW, BF2, CS:S) and big increase in performance from my workstation apps AutoCAD and Inventor 10.

Rating + 5 Nice Little processor

Pros: Upgrade from a 3400+, what an improvement. I tried to get the 4800+ but after 3 tries and a $100 price rise I give up. Newegg please forgive me, that I have strayed, I am back now, you had it in stock and you delivered it on time with UPS. I will never try to buy anywhere else. I recommend you to everyone.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Awsome heatsink, keeps my temps in the low 40's C. Only Fedex would have made this better, they always deliver a day earlier.

Rating + 5 Its Good

Pros: It cut my boot times down. I can rip large files alot quicker and just the overall quality of my computer has changed for the better. Better heatsink than other stock HSFs

Cons: Its not the best overclocker i do have it on an epox nforce 4 ultra board with 2gigs of gskill ddr 500
ati x850xt. my 3700 would overclock to 2.7 on stock cooling i can get this one up to 2.6. At stock speeds the thing runs a little warm for my taste but on stock cooling and two cores what do you expect.

Other Thoughts: waiting for vista even though i dont like vista much it will probably take more advantage of the CPU and both cores and the 64-bit part. Plays games pretty well and multitasking is awesome would have liked to get a better price or more cache but what the hey

Rating + 5 great for the price

Pros: true multi-tasking. this processor is by far the best investment i have made in a long time. i do alot of video format converting for my ipod and that chewed up my old 3500. i would pretty much start the conversion and walk away for a while. this one takes a lickin and keeps on tickin!

Cons: didnt get much more gaming performance but thats not the processors fault. games arent multi-threaded yet but when they are, it will rock!

Other Thoughts: older motherboards are compaitble with x2's by upgrading the bios. but if your board is capable by replacing the bios chip, replace the chip. i never enjoyed flashing bios' and when i flashed mine, i killed it. the comp would only beep. but replacing the bios chip worked!

be sure to install the dual core optimizer to maximize multi-tasking

Pros: There is a driver on the AMD website that corrects this problem. It sincs the timing so you no longer have to set cpu affinity.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I didn't have any problems to begin with on my games but I've got all the windows updates. I downloaded it anyway to be safe. NWN, BF2, Jedi Outcast, Half Life 1, COD and MOH all play fine. No problems at all. I can play them and have any background app I want running. I'm digging it. Get the AMD CPU driver and enjoy your purchase.

Pros: It's fast. I just upgraded from a single core 3800 and am smiling.

Rating + 4 Not for Gamers

Pros: This processor overclocks easily to 2.5 GHZ per core ON AIR...Thats with my Zalman 9500 which is kind of a monster heatsink, but I have no temperature problems for the entire year its been running intense games while clocked that high. It's pretty fast with a lot of applications...

Cons: Not the best choice for gaming... Affinity problems like crazy because games have not been designed for dual core procs yet. I cant even say how annoying it was before I found out what was causing all the lag and crashes on 9 out of 10 games I play. Also very annoying having to ctrl-alt-del and set the freakin affinity to one core every time I start a game so system memory wont get eaten up to the point of crashing/ locking up/ warning screens etc.....

GAMES ARE NOT DESIGNED TO FUNCTION CORRECTLY USING THIS PROCESSOR UNLESS YOUR ONLY USING ONE OF THE CORES. MIGHT AS WELL BUY A ATHLON 64 3800+ AND SAVE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other Thoughts: Still a reliable processor.

Rating + 5 Good CPU

Pros: Awesome processor! I work with these Cup's every day for asus/HP. I get ahold of computers that have over 80 - 100 running processes, and this cpu is running ice cold, and under 25% of usage. I have seen computer that take over 10 minutes to boot up to windows with a single core 3000, and i put in one of these it boot under one minute. I have found the some flaws with the 3000's, but nothing has ever gone wrong with the 4000's. It's all your really right now. It's quick, runs cool, and it's cheap! I don't know any games that needs a duel core 2.6 ghz processor.....lol

Cons: I can't say anything bad about this cpu.

Other Thoughts: Don't put too much thermalpaste on! I don't want to see one of these at work becasue morons put to much thermalpaste on or try to put a 939 cpu into a AM2. DON'T make a review and say the con is it's not a quad core, or it's not cheap enough, get a job, and shut up about the price! i hate reading reviews, and hearing people cry, because it costs more that their bigger king jobs pays them a week.

Rating + 5 Good Buy

Pros: Excellent performer. Gotta LOVE that 4-tube heat pipe HSF! Runs cool-never got over 51*C under 3 1/2 hrs of heavy usage using stock thermal pad. Woulda bought this CPU eariler but was out of my price range. Best CPU I have ever owned.

Cons: Outside of 939-pin socket being dead end as far as upgradeability goes, absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: I replaced a perfectly fine X2 4200+(which is going into the wife's box). Running a X2 4600+ on an Asus A8N-E mobo w/ eVGA GeForce 7900GTX w/ 2Gb Corsair XMS PC3200 mem all powered by a PC P & C 510 PSU-blows thru everything I've run w/ ease. Newegg is tops in my book! Unless you're into cutting-edge stuff, this is an excellent option for the bargain-minded users.

Rating + 5 Very good

Pros: Very fast , easy to install, Driver package and optimizer on amd plus hot fix from windows (on amd site too) and you do not need to reinstall windows, just clean up, defrag, and scan disc before you start.Runs virus scanner or plays dvds with out breaking a sweat. Truly easy to install, read AMD forums for all the advice you need. Theres alot of posts on installing these. My chip runs very cool and It is very fast...I upgrade from a 3500, this destroys that.

Cons: I shoulda bought this sooner. Im always a year behind ,,,or two,,,,Too expensive to buy the newest big thing...Prices drop alot in a year! Next year I will get a quad core or core duo...who knows!

Other Thoughts: If you bend the pins on a cpu slightly, use a clean razor or something to realign the bent ones with straight ones (only if its just a few pins) You might as well try it, you cant return it if they bent! Use a big magnifying glass, good light and a ravor as a straight edge....Be gentle! Its very easily fixable,,,, Just keep lining them up and retrying it, DO NOT force it in socket!

Pros: Very easy drop-in upgrade to an existing Socket-939 system. Included retail heatsink is very good, eliminating the need for an aftermarket heatsink.

Rating + 5 939s Still Rock!

Pros: I upgraded from a single core 3000+ and it was worth it! With the drop in CPU prices, any existing 939 owner should jump on this! It blows through video encoding and games like a breeze!

Cons: AMD is phasing out the 939 chips.

Other Thoughts: Purchase this only if you are an existing 939 owner and want to save $$$. AM2s still don't provide enough of a performance advantage to completely upgrade your system. If you are building a system from scratch or if cpu upgradability is important, build yourself an AM2 system.

Pros: The price was excellent. The pure power that I get from the processor is insane.

Cons: The heatsink is good. But could be better. You need to go onto the AMD website in order to make this processor work really well with the games.

Other Thoughts: AMD. Always a beeter choice then Intel. I don't care if they have a "faster" processor out right now. All their 64bit processors are based off of AMD old 64bit technology. Thats right, AMD sold Intel their old 64bit processor architechture.

Pros: Great value! Replaced my 3500+ and much better performance! Faster, more cache, and dual core! 64-bit isn't the norm now, but I'm practically salivating for when crysis comes out!

Cons: Just 20 bucks more than the 3500 when I bought it.

Other Thoughts: Not to make this a forum post, I feel bad for the other guy who said this isn't great compared to the core 2 duos. Ummmm yea the other is faster in 32-bit, but for crysis, 10-20% boost in cpu performance sounds good to me. Faster memory achitecture will destroy the Core 2's, this processor much cheaper, and the support hardware is cheaper too (PC 3200 is about the same as the faster stuff, costs less, cheaper mobo's, etc...)
AMD still owns the gaming market for the price, and nothing will change about that for the next few years.

Pros: Runs smoothly, the stock fan is suprisingly good, at idle 35C and full load 46C. Got rid of the preapplied stock thermal paste and used Arctic Silver 5. That made to drop the temp for 2 degrees of C. Speaking of drops - the price drop is great too!

Cons: I can't really think of any right now, but I run the CPU for two weeks, so the experience is too short.

Other Thoughts: Don't forget to instal Windows XP SP2 Dual Core Performance Hot Fix - go to AMDzone.com and search for "hotfix".

Pros: Dual-core and fast. Since it is a 939, it has mature motherboards and memory, unlike AM2 and Core 2 setups where a ton of users were reporting memory problems.

Cons: 939 is dying.

Other Thoughts: Yes, Core 2 is better, far better. But it is new, and thus you'll be hard pressed to find a quality motherboard and memory at good prices. And, considering memory and motherboards, this is the cheapest way to go dual-core.

Rating + 5 Great value...well worth it

Pros: I've had this for over a month now. Went from an A64 3000 to this. Games run better. No hiccups when virus scanning and doing anything else. Price drop was nice (it was even cheaper when I purchased it a month ago). Runs cool. Heatsink is effective. I also got a new (quality) case to go with it which probably helps as well.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It's a good processor for sure. Real world multitasking should improve but don't expect miracles. I haven't done the "run as many demanding apps at once" torture test as others have, so I can't offer any input on the X2 4600 in that respect.

I installed the AMD driver, MS hotfix, and D/C optimizer. No issues but I haven't been able to discern any difference in performance with them vs. without them. Nevertheless I kept them installed.

Pros: Worked great with my ASUS A8N-E motherboard. Properly detected. Temps run at 40c on average. Haven't been able to push it beyond 43c. Works great in linux after installing k7-smp kernel (k8 if you want 64bit). Both cores detected and working. VMware Server seems to work fine. Incredibly cheap thanks to the price war between AMD and Intel.

Cons: Stock fan/heatsink was incredibly difficult to mount. I was worried that it wasn't centered when I was done, but temps seem ok so far.

Other Thoughts: Wish Linux had some good benchmarking software to really test it out.

Rating + 5 Great bang for the buck

Pros: Stock thermal paste is better than A*5/C*ramique. Idles at 35C when Cool n Quiet is on, around 38C without. OCs well if you have good RAM. Faster than an FX60 @ 2.6ghz (the easiest overclock to do out of the box). Games fly, still trying to get out of the habit of waiting for the computer to finish doing something - b/c well - it's dual core!

Cons: Make sure you install the dual core optimizer and dual core drivers from the amd website. Also, download the WinXP dual processor patch. I had a problem where this cpu would hang sometimes even after drivers/patch, but I just upped the ram voltage to 2.6v and it's fine again.

Other Thoughts: ASUS A8N5X, Rosewill RP550-2 psu, 2gigs PC3200, x1800xt. The stock cooler has heatpipes but faces down like conventional ones. I bought the Artic Freezer 64 Pro cooler. Blows air to the back of the case. Recommended if you're going to OC.

Cons: Other than me being a moron and buying the wrong socket, I got nothing bad to say

Other Thoughts: I did get the AM2 of this chip and it runs great! I would recommend this. And if you see this as an open box (OEM) I never pulled the CPU out. So enjoy the discount at my expense. O.o

Rating + 5 Perfect!

Pros: Can't beat the price even though they did go up.
Got my 2 at $xxx
2.4GHz 512 cache, yes that is a pro.

For all of you complaining about it not being 1 meg cache, do some research.
512 cache cpus overclock much better than a 1mb cache cpu.
The 1 meg cache doesn't make a noticable improvement in any gaming application.
As a matterof fact, it can slow down performance on some apps, mostly games.
As for a 3800 X2 being 2.4 Ghz as well it has to run 4 instruction sets per cycle where as the 4600 X2 only needs 2 instruction sets per cycle.

And yeah there is a reason it has less reviews. People don't do enough research.
Why do you think this CPU kept going out of stock and went up in price?

Cons: Not a one!

Other Thoughts: If you are running 7900 GT cards or higher in SLI with this cpu and want to overclock the cpu AND vid cards.
You need a proper power supply or your cpu will throttle back.
This is the reason some people don't see the improvement they should see.
PC power & cooling has the 510 SLI psu that is pretty much the best you can get for this type of configuration.
Go there and read about it, read the reviews.
It will peak 630 watts when needed, but most important it has 38 amps on the 12v rails.
You won't see that on other power supplies even at 630 watts.

Its freakin fast and all but its alot more $$$ then the am2 4400, sure you get 2.4ghz instead of 2.2 but you get half the cache with the 4600 compared to the 4400. Pros: Very quick processor. Great at multi-tasking of any kind. Encoding of any kind goes so much faster with a dual core.

Cons: Too expensive. Low cache.

Other Thoughts: This is fast, for sure. But it's not worth it with only 512KB cache size. The X2's OC very well and one could easily push a 4400+ to 4800+ speeds and still have the 1MB cache. There's a reason why this doesn't have as many reviews as the 4400+ and 4800+.

Rating + 5 If Chuck Norris made a CPU...

Pros: then this would be it, but with better acting. It is however a beast that kicks anything else in the face whenever it has the chance. Also like Chuck Norris, it doesnt make much noise. I play F.E.A.R. at 1280x1040-32, and have no issues at all. In fact the only issue I have had, was from the thing being too fast. I had to set it to run Star Wars: Battlefront on one core only, otherwise the gameplay was about 300% of its normal speed. (Notice how I list that as a Pro ;) ) It also comes with a very nice alluminum heatpipe cooler, that installed to my DFI board in just a second, keeping the unit at under 50^ all the time, game or no game.

Cons: They didnt accidentally ship me an FX-60?

Other Thoughts: CNet has a very informative review comparing the newest dual core CPU's, in which the 4600+ ranks second only to the 4800+ (The FX-60 was not released at the time the review was written)

Pros: This is by far the best proccessor ive ever used. I have tried several high quality Mac workstations (G5s) and none of them even begin to compare to this.

Render times are noticibly faster than the G5 and incompareably faster than single core processors.

Possible to Render part of a scene in maya while working on another part.

All modern games ive played get 60+ FPS with a single 7800GTX

Even for general computing/web browsing/word processing etc. there is a huge difference between dual and single core. The ability to open and close multiple programs while listening to music, defragging, installing new software, as well copying files to an external hard drive with no slow down on any one is insane.

Cons: Now that the price is dropped it is probably worth grabbing the 4800 instead. Ive never used one, but the larger cache may be imporant.

Other Thoughts: Go dual core, you will never go back.

4600 X2, 7800 GTX, 2 gig RAM, 2x WD 74 gig 10,000 RPM, SB Fatality, Antec Truecontrol.

Pros: It's fast! I reach the FPS ceiling for Doom 3 and Quake 4 (which is around 60-70) and the HL2: Lost Coast demo runs at over 100fps. Video encoding was a HUGE improvement over my old XP 2600 which I attribute to the dual-core.

Cons: a little pricey, but that's coming down quickly. It does generate plenty of heat, so get an additional cooling device (water or copper+fan) if you plan on overclocking.

Other Thoughts: Just to put the FPS and boot times in to perspective I'm running a pair of 320GB HD's (7500 RPM, 16mb cache, NCQ, RAID 0), 2 GB of RAM @ 218, 2-3-3-6 1T timing, and the game FPS were done with a pair of 6800XT cards in SLI.

Comments: This is for the guy who doesn't know anything about the X2 Chips....you aren't paying double for another 512mb cache, you are paying double because it's like having 2 cpu's in one. Its basically two athlon 64 3800+, ofcourse its not twice as fast....but you will be able to run two times more with out slowing down. As for the guy with the opteron....both CPUs are totally identical. It is just a branding thing. Opterons are supposed to be "professional" so professional customers want to get the "professional" Opteron, not the "gaming CPU" Athlon64.

Rating + 5 Runs Circles Around Intel

Comments: I recently moved from a previous Pentium 4 2.8 with HT to the machine specs you see below. When HT came out, there was definately a fine line performance wise between single and multiple threads. Although Intels HT concept was a great benchmark and paved a clear path for multithreaded applications, it is clear now with the X2, that 2 Processors, and not two threads, yields better performance. I love this processor and I hope that my decision in getting it while anticipating future games to utilize it was a good one. As far as single threaded games, it still is a monster.

System Specs
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
OCZ 2x512 DDR SDRAM
DFI LanParty UT nF4 SLI-DR
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
BFGTech GeForce 7800 GTX

Rating + 4 good board

Comments: this is a great board for the money, iv had mine close to 6 months now and i only have a few complaints, first off the chipset fan is loud and sometimes likes to cut out(a well noted problem) and if you try to overclock your fsb above about 225 you will get nothing but problems, i tried everything i could think of and i could not manage to get this board past that mark. otherwise great board and i love the bios

Rating + 5 Worlds Best Processor

Comments: This is by far the best processor on the planet. I can never see myself ever going back to a single core processor.
