Best upgrade for socket 939
Pros: Dual core. No need to throw away the old 939 motherboard. I upgraded to this Opty 175 from an FX-55 and the improvement was dramatic. Currently using it for 3D rendering, it cut my rendering time in half.
Cons: Seems tricky to overclock. Wish the clock speed was higher.
Other Thoughts: If you still have a 939 motherboard laying around, use this CPU for a significant upgrade.

Great upgrade
Pros: Upgraded to this from a 3500+ and with no trouble it worked perfectly. Really dropped some new life into my old socket 939 system.
Cons: None

AMD does it again
Pros: I bought this opteron upgrading from a single core 2.4 Ghz Athlon, and the performance increase is amazing. With AMD's Dual Core optimizer tool, you really do see an increase in performance with apps. Also gave me about a 10fps boost in crysis... Although thats mostly a video card problem, more about that in another review.
Cons: Found it a little on the pricey side, as say compared to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, its the same price. Yes, socket 939 is older technology, thats the price you pay for hanging on to that machine.
Other Thoughts: AMD does it again. Thats all that needs to be said.

Very Impressed
Pros: After havin' an aging 3500+ Anthon for 4+ years, I finally decided to see what my upgrade options were. Go figure that AMD's website would try to throw me another Anthon right off the bat, heh. Anyways, a friend of mine showed me this and another processor that he considered the best for my situation (Socket 939.) I went with this and I was completely astound by the substantial increase in preformance my PC has now reached. I haven't tried overclocking yet but I probably won't, I get all the power I need from its initial settings. Not to mention that my PC is currently holding this baby back (Xpress 200 for Graphics and got another stick of 512 Memory atop the standard 1Gig it came with.) I only expect to see improvements as I install more memory and get myself a reliable up-to-date video card.
Cons: None so far and from what I hear, it's gonna stay that way for quite a while.
Other Thoughts: If you've already got a mobo that has the socket 939 slot for processors get this or the Opteron 180. Either of these upgrades will probably last you the remaining life of those boards. Otherwise if you're starting from scratch, I'd suggest getting a more up-to-date motherboard, don't wanna be stuck with a half-life on a new PC now, would you?

Awesome
Pros: Excellent over clocker. I have this running @ 2.75ghz with stock voltage. If my memory was better I could easily break 3ghz with this cpu.
Cons: yeah right....
Other Thoughts: This chip easily puts your aging socket 939 back in the game. Don't bother upgrading to a AM2 when you can pump this puppy up. Just make sure you have good memory to reach those insane speeds!

Best OC'er I've owned
Pros: Awesome OC'er, very fast at encoding/decoding and compressing. Also extremely good for gaming. IMO its better than the X2 series.
Cons: I couldn't hit 3.2gigs :'(
Other Thoughts: Almost got this to 3.2gigs OC but I backed it down because it was running a bit warm. Now its stable at 2.7gigs with a Zalman CNPS7700 (I think its that cooler, cant remember exactly). MUCH faster thanmy old x2 3800+ (and a better OC'er). Do not try this CPU if you dont want to get hooked on Opty's!

no better multitasker
Pros: powerful 64bit proc. if you multitask opterons are for you. this thing is insane it was outpreforming my multitasking abilities, i had to stretch up my taskbar to keep up with everything. had WMM saving a movie file, SUPER encoding files to MPEG4, and about 60 img windows open in the GIMP, even had UT2k4 open in windowed mode.not to mention the 6 explorer windows with all the files in them. all this while playing music/surfing the web, and with NO slowdown whatsoever. i am no longer afraid to run antivirus scans, burn DVDs, and play UT2k4 at the same time.
Cons: its not quad core? my only having 1GB ram was holding this thing back, no fault of the proc. upgrading to 4GB soon
Other Thoughts: it runs superpi 1m iess than 32 seconds at stock speed. on stock cooling without overclocking (with ArticS5 of course) ive never seen this get above 40c.

Not good for O/C
Pros: It is good for multitasking
Cons: I replaced a 3700+ San Diego working @ 2750 with high stability and low mem timings, I hoped this Opty would be the same but with two cores. Using same setup, very, very instable, had to go almost to 1.5 v and loose timings from 2.5-3-3-5 (with 3700) to 3-4-4-6, not as fast or stable as 3700+. I guest had bad luck with stepping CCBWE 0601…
Other Thoughts: It works very hot, using Thermaltake Blue Orb II 36°C at idle to 60°C at high load for example with Ghost Recon AWF. (3700 28°C idle to 50°C at full load) I was thinking to get a 180, but I read it is a worst I got 1 min 11.7 sec on Super pi 2m against 1 min 09.3 with 3700+

Bad luck maybe? Major headache!
Pros: Despite how much I hate UPS, newegg got the order out of their warehouse same day I ordered, received two days later... guess kudos to UPS for living up to their 3-day guarantee for once haha.
Cons: I'm jealous of all the reviewers that were able to push 3.0ghz. This piece runs HOTTTT with a Thermalright XP-90C CPU Copper Heatsink, and a Panasonic Panaflow 92mm fan sitting on top, around 42c idle. Kept my old 3700+ OC'd to 2.85ghz running around 38c under full load, 29c idle. Running at stock speeds, system is unstable. I raised the voltage to 1.5, and temps started to exceed 45c idle with no effect on stability. Booted fine at 2.0ghz no problems except running hot :X
Other Thoughts: Going to try the Opteron 185...

Not Bad, Not Bad
Pros: Install smooth and efficient. Not much for me to do but watch. Windows SP2 worked without skipping a beat.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: I have read all types of bad press on this chip & the MB I have. Been building rigs since '94 (486 days). My rig is happy, I'm happy. I upgraded from an Athlon Sempron 754. The difference is very noticable. Playing Madden online is awesome. My programs and web pages now pop up instantly. WOW! I put this on a $49.99 Asus A8V-XE in a rig I'm using in my media room. Got an XFX 8600 GT for graphics. Soon will be purchasing the Sony Bravia 46 to take advantage of the PC input so I can do gaming at 1920 x 1080, 46". Should be a totally awesome experience. I'm satisfied. Newegg got it to me quick too.

Great processor!!!
Pros: I bought this processor because it took my (ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe) system to the max upgrade possible before I will, undoubtedly, have to break down and build a new one with an intel proc. What can I say? The mobo and Windows recognized it flawlessly and it works perfectly! Games run better (no chop and the framerates are better) and video processing is much faster too. I had an Athlon64 3700+ before and this was a worthy upgrade! The new AMD stock heatsinks on these bad boys are awesome too! Heatpipe technology, easy to install, and work very well! As an enthusaist I usually like to apply my own thermal grease, but the benefits are really marginal compared to the stock "tape" already on the stock processor so I just use the stock. If you're an overclocker, you may need another option but for standard operation there is simply no need to use anything more than the stock option. It works awesome!
Cons: None that I can think of.
Other Thoughts: It might sound funny but one of the games I use to test stuff like this is Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. The game's graphics are a bit old school by this time, but there's so much going on that it takes loads of processor power to run if you have a lot of rides built and running on screen. It will actually punish your machine pretty good so it makes a great tester game. This new processor was a major improvement over the previous Athlon64. Framerates are up and things are smooth and no more chop. My other games run awesome too! FEAR, HL2, Oblivion, TrackMania Sunrise, Battlefield 2142 all look superb and run at the highest settings without a stall! Dirt runs good, however, is one graphics intense program and my system overall is just not powerful enough (even with my 7900GT SLI config and 2gb RAM) to take it full speed, but it is MUCH better than it was with the single proc. If you are wanting to squeeze some more life out of your 939 mobo, GET THIS CHIP!

Exactly what I expected
Pros: I have used nothing but AMD CPUs since the late 90s. I suppose I go for the underdog. I have never been disappointed and this Operton is in this class. Very fast when running multi apps (download, number crunching, video etc). Load time from "beep" to login screen is 17 seconds and my PC is loaded with stuff! Have always and will always run AMD!
Cons: Cons? This is an AMD processor. Asking for cons should not be listed
Other Thoughts: Bought an aftermarket fan - AC Freezer Pro64. CPU core temps are 42c and 39c using paste provided.

Great Upgrade
Pros: Great value & price for a 939 upgrade. Noticable performance increase from my 3000+ Venice.
Cons: CPU cons? None!
UPS delivery is poor at best. Disapointed to see Newegg use UPS. Box arrived smashed and dirty. Cpu in tact tho.
Other Thoughts: Get one while you can before people realize it's comprable to the, in high demand, 4400+ x2.

great cpu
Pros: great cpu rock stable in my media center/gaming computer 24/7. overclocks to 3ghz stable easy and is rock stable at that speed without uping the vcore.
Cons: wish it would go higher :P
Other Thoughts: i got it running at that speed on a msi neo4, 1gb of ocz value ram at that, 4 scsi hard drive in a raid that is in a array and a 20gb ahard drive the psu is antec 550 he wich is great btw, x-fi sound card musicextreme, shapirre x1300xt 512mb pci-x video card.all in all it is a great cpu for 24/7 use and doesnt run that hot ether only at make 45c wich compared to an intel is cold

Great Cpu!
Pros: I bought this as a last ditch effort to keep my 939S afloat. I got over a 20% OC on it (2673MHZ) and I am not done yet. I am using a Zalman cooler and the cpu idles @ 38c. Dual core is great. I can do things without loading down the machine now. My Antivirus scans and I don't even notice it. Before it would slow my system to a crawl.
Cons: Hmmm.....Can't think of one unless it would be to sell it for less than $139.00
Other Thoughts: If my board was better I could clock easier. But that will wait until the next upgrade to C2D.

she'll do.
Pros: four copperpipe heatsink w/ fan keeps my Opty idling at 21*C Idle and not much higher in games such as Oblivion and STALKER. Performance increases in most Apps like Nero and Adobe Premiere.
Cons: at first couldnt notice a big difference over my Single Core A64 3200+ Venice at 2.4Ghz. but after a few modifications were doing good.
Other Thoughts: if you want your 939 system to stay in the fight a little longer, might as well dish out a few for this. its worth it in my opinion. now i just need to take back all the things a said bad about the dual cores when the first came out.

Go for a 146.
Pros: This is a wonderful chip that can take just about anything you need to run. I OC'd it to 2.77 GHz on stock cooling (fan upgrade) and didn't use more than 1.5 volts to do it. settings: 252 x 11 1.4 V +200 Vcore ht: 800 MHz
Cons: Did not go as high as I hoped. Paid $228 for it.
Other Thoughts: Like I said, get the 146. More value.

LCB9E 0652 WPMW
Pros: AMD Opty- runs cool, runs fast. Incredible price, great upgrade for 939.
Cons: 939 discontinued, C2D is a better architechture.
Other Thoughts: Right now running @ 2750MHz, 100% stable. Hopefull to get a little more. Pretty up-and-down stepping this 0652 for OCing. I got mine early last week shipped from New Jersey. Get one now!

Pros: This Opty 175 is well worth the upgrade if you want to go dual core on a 939 mobo and get a few more years out of your pc, instead of spending a whole lot more for a full upgrade. Install was simple. Stock heatsink and fan is nice. Runs cool and fast.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: Just make sure your 939 mobo is designed for a dual core. Not all 939 mobos are. Look up the mobo model# and the revision before buying to make sure. Ordered this on a Monday and got it on Tuesday. Newegg is the BEST!

Nice proc
Pros: Runs cool, low voltage requirements. Great upgrade to a dual core from a single core. With a lot of the A64 X2 going bye bye, this is the best alternative if you want to keep your socket 939.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Buy one

Very Nice
Pros: What to say? Its very fast and it overclocked out of the box to 2.8 ghz at stock voltage. Haven't yet found the top end on it yet. pretty happy at 2.8.
Cons: one of the cores runs about 10-12c hotter than the other so at full load the hot core is usually sitting at about 60c with my ninja plus b cooler. idles at 38-40c
Other Thoughts: overall I'm extremely happy with this chip. I have seen some have trouble overclocking this stepping but that has not been my experience.

Opty175 from Athlon 3200
Pros: Warcraft is much faster, 40FPS Multitasking much faster. 3dMark05 3200 3295 new Opty 3419 Not a lot of improvement for the money. Could be my old ATI X700, but gain
Cons: OC's well I have mine running at 2530 MHZ CPU at 57C 135F a little warm, was expecting larger increases in 3dmarks.

Got a good one
Pros: Got LCB9E 0652 stepping currently 2.92Ghz w/default voltage and hasn't failed one benchmark or game condition yet. Running ram w/divider because it's lower quality and would never hold up to 265 FSB 1:1.
Cons: Not such a good deal now with the price cuts that just occured on the non-opty procs.
Other Thoughts: DFI NF4-ultra d, 2G's of G.Skill 3200 value stuff, EVGA 8800GTS 320, Corsair 520 Power Supply, Koolance Exos

Listen to the reviews
Pros: 939 and in stock. It's performing well, a decent upgrade from my 3500+ Venice.
Cons: The price. Absolutely NOT the best opteron to buy if you plan to overclock. I got as far as 2.8Ghz (prime95 stable) but had to pull back to 2.7 because my load temps were too high.
Other Thoughts: I read all the other reviews about it's weak overclockability and naturally I assumed they were all doing something wrong. The X2 4200+ Toledo OEM is still going in and out of stock, pick one of those up if you can and save yourself some $.

Got a Bad One
Pros: Includes high quality cooler.
Cons: Immediately noticed higher than normal CPU idle temp, +10°C relative to last Opteron I tested. Tried another cooler, no improvement. Load testing showed that one core was running very hot, 12°C higher than the other while under identical simultaneous load. This was at stock speed and voltage, with factory cooler. Apparently this sample came with a manufacturing defect.

It has it's ups and downs....
Pros: I'm a heavy downloader, I mean 24/7 if need be. Even at full bandwidth, the Opteron puts my old 3500+ single-core Venice in it's grave allowing me to browse pages with very little wait - it's almost as if I wasn't downloading anything at all. Those who use Azareus, for instance, should look into a dual-core. Make sure you set the "CPU Core Affinity" for programs you use often.
Cons: I don't notice much of an improvement in gaming or 3DMark, even paired with more current hardware. The Opteron needs respectable memory, not Value RAM, to operate at it's full potential.
Other Thoughts: All in all, it's an excellent upgrade from a single-core and anyone looking to keep 939 alive and bank some green for an AM2 down the road.

Pros: None
Cons: Had received two processors in the same condition, beat up packaging inside the box with processor floating inside.Several pins bent on the second processor received.two packages arrived in the same condition.Seems that all have the same problem.
Other Thoughts: I had to send this overseas and I do not know whether it will work.

Opty 175
Pros: Breathed new life into my 939 system. Replaced and Athlon 64 3500. System seems to run much smoother and is more responsive. Ready for Vista 64 install.
Cons: - No cons- Very happy with my purchase
Other Thoughts: The last CPU upgrade for my 939 system. Good deal, runs BF2 and FS X great! My first Opteron, performs great! Benchmarks parallel my friends X2 4800.

Pros: Definitely makes a difference in speed. Right out of the box, it blows my 146 away.
Cons: CCBWE stepping prefers stock speeds. Wiki confirmed this. But that's like saying you can't put octane boost in a Ferrari.
Other Thoughts: i bought an Opty 146 6 months ago to replace an XP2400+, and didn't really see a diff in speed, even after a little 'bumpage'. But this 175 is what I was looking for. small things like opening a folder of thumbnailed pics...BAM! They are open before the folder opens. I am now happy with my new rig: Coolermaster Centurion 5/ Rosewill 500w PSU/Opty 175 2.2 @ 2.45/ Asus A7N5X/1GB Corsair Extreme PC3200 @ 2-2-3-6/ XFX 7900GS 480/1400 @ 550/1500/ 2x WD 160GB/ 2x Samsung 18XDVD-R

Note this review, for prepurchase planning!
Pros: Yes. Well without caveat, its really fast(hint: what you want it to be). Its works & came with an 11x multiplier. Great Price to performace, from "silicon valley."

Cons: Well it's not artificial intelligence!
Other Thoughts: @ approx. 89W per core

Got a bad stepping.......:(
Pros: Gave me what its advertised.
Cons: 400 Mhz overclock with this stepping. Waaaahhhh....
Other Thoughts: I wish I could have picked a stepping. I had a 4000+ at 2.8 and windows seemed a bit snappier. I got this up to 2.6, it might be my ram. xms3200. Zalman cooler never lets go over 50c after gaming for hours. 3d06 score went from a 4700 to 5700 with a x1950xt after installing this chip. Dual core defintley benifits some. Bf2 seems a bit smother also.

Quite pleased
Pros: After reading reviews for the 165, 170, and this one, knowing I would NOT be overclocking, I opted for this one. Great choice as far as I am concerned. I will be happy with this set up I have now for at least the next couple years, then I will let the AMD and Intel one-upmanship play its self out and at that time make a choice and build all new. I am not one that has to have the best out there. I look at performance, and spend my money wisely.
Temps dropped from around 43C @ idle on my 3800+ single core, to 33C @ idle - 38C when running games. Not sure what the previous poster got, but I was quite pleased with stock cooling set-up. Then again I am not overclocking. Heat sink is nice 4 pipe, could always upgrade fan, but see no need to at this point.
Cons: None really, I am happy :).
Other Thoughts: It always takes a few days to tweak everything. I noticed a huge performance improvment over my 3700+ Single core.

Vrooom!
Pros: Very impressive right out of the box! It runs everything about twice as fast as my old cpu (Athlon 64 X2 3800), even at stock speeds. This thing OC's with ease and without raising the temps hardly at all.
Cons: The fan on the heatsink is poorly attached and maxes out at 2000 Rpm. Hardly worth attaching to this CPU.
Other Thoughts: Currently running at 2.7 Ghz on a DFI lanparty UT SLI DR expert, With 2 Gigs of Patriot PC4000 Dual channel ram, and a Gforce 7800 GT OC. Air cooled only! 8 case fans moving about 250 cfm! :)

Stick with Opteron
Pros: Two rock solid cores, 64 bit support, included cooler doesn't suck. Most multithreaded apps are blazing fast.
Cons: Well... it could always be faster. I can't get the power management features to work without quirks.
Other Thoughts: 939 has been discontinued. If you're upgrading, do it very soon!

Works well for me!
Pros: Multitasking, multitasking, multitasking. Its nice to be able to defragment the hard drive while I finish my homework or burn a CD while I surf the internet.
Cons: The thirty dollar price drop the day after mine shipped.
Other Thoughts: I'm not much of an overclocker so I'm running mine at stock speeds. The main reason I upgraded was because I was concerned that it was becoming increasingly difficult to find s939 dual core processors and I thought it would give me another year or two out of my machine. I've been very pleased with the purchase.

solid
Pros: spreads load across both cores evenly. startup is fast and smooth. i have lots of back ground apps running so it's good to have 2 cores and it's rare that they hit 100% use with multiple heavy tasking; even then it's only for a second or two.
Cons: none.
Other Thoughts: i'd like some advice on overclocking. i used nTune to overclock the AMD 3500 2.2 by 10% with ease, but nTune can't get this past 4% OC. Bios OC not set to manual.

Fast and Stable
Pros: Very solid performance for the $$. Fired up first try. Stock heatsink seems to keep it cool. Processor doesn't break a sweat when under full load (Oblivion, Antivirus Software, Torrent Manager).
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: First purchase from newegg.com... among many more to follow.

goes toe to toe with the mighty Intel Duo
Pros: When overclocked correctly, almost as fast as an Intel Duo running at stock speed
Cons: The current price and the whinning of incompetent overclockers
Other Thoughts: This is an update to my previous post. I got my Opteron last December for just $xxx. I was shocked to see the current price. Anyway it remains a good value for people having socket 939. Some additional info regarding my oeverclocking parameters: bus speed 204 MHz, CPU voltage 1.45 V, HT Link 1130 MHz (at 3.125 GHz). Memory two 1 GB Corsair sticks. Graphics card: NVIDIA 7800 GTX. Although this card is obsolete, my 3D Mark scores are competitive: 34056 (2001), 19436 (2003), 9045 (2005) and 4899 (2006)

OC king
Pros: Rock stable at 3.125 GHz - a 42% overclock. Cheap - only $xxx when I bought it. Rocks with everything, even with Microsoft FS X
Cons: Are you kidding? - there are no cons
Other Thoughts: Unless both cores are used to the mas, the CPU temperature hovers at about 44 C. True, overclocking can be a bit tricky. Yet, I really do not understand why some people cannot OC it to more than 2.5 - 2.6 GHz. I wonder if these people used a decent mobo, cooling system and memory. One should not blame the CPU if the rset of the system is not suitable for overclocking. My Opteron exceeded 2.7 GHz right away changing just the CPU frequency. 3.125 GHz is not the top stable speed - after a month of tweaking I just got tired tryng to find the speed limit

WOW!
Pros: Fast-Fast-FAST! and stable. It takes everything I throw at it and doesn't miss a beat!
Cons: Absolutely none
Other Thoughts: I purchased the OEM version of this chip and used the heatsinc and fan from my old 754-pin Athon 3000+. This chip runs cooler and much faster when AMD's Cool&Quiet is running. AWESOME Chip!

Pros: Dual Core 2x1MB cache. Runs multiple apps at same time well. 11x multiplier if you need it.
Cons: Stepping is hit or miss. I got CCBWE 0551VPMW which is the worst out there. This chip was manufactured week 51 of 05, so it has been sitting on the shelves a long time, now I can see why. Having trouble running stable at 2.5ghz.
Other Thoughts: Better off getting a 170 or 165 if your memory can handle 250mhz or above. Egg is shipping great steppings on those chips. Memory latency doesn't seem to be an issue with these chips, so loosen your timings and crank up speed.

Stepping update (shipped from NJ)
Pros: 2.2ghz and 1mb cache. Nice if you don't want to get a new MB and RAM for AM2.
Cons: no cons. Chip does exactly what it should (just hoped to hit the stepping lottery)
Other Thoughts: Ordered on 1/15/07, received a CCBWE 0551VPMW on 1/18/07. Not the greatest stepping. They are known to OC at 2600 or less. Still a good chip at the end of the day though.

Best Socket 939 CPU!
Pros: Extremely FAST! I upgraded from a X2 4200+ that would not overclock at all. This cpu goes like mad. I have it clocked at 2.75GHz at stock volts! Running 2 instances of FAH it still remains under 45c. I have it running in a Shuttle SN95GV3.
Cons: Socket 939 is dead! What a shame AMD killed it. If they released some of these new faster cpu's for socket 939 I bet they would see some sales.
Other Thoughts: I am glad I bought it before Newegg raised the price!

CCBBE 0610DPMW
Pros: I was able to get 2.9 @ 1.425V with aftermarket cooling and four sticks of value ram. 32C idle 44C load. Faster ram would see at least 3Ghz easy with this great CCBBE 0610DPMW stepping. I got the OEM version for $xxx
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Will extend the life of a socket 939 system for quite a while.

3 GHz on air
Pros: I got an incredible stepping:CBBE 0617EPMW
Right now its stable (runs 3dmark06) at 3.0 ghz, at 1.55v, on air cooling, but with aftermarket heatsink.
I got this chip 50 bucks off of retail price by going with OEM. I will admit I'm pretty sure I can credit such a high clock by getting lucky with stepping.
I may try to go higher with clock, but its going to require more voltage for sure. Idles 42/43C
Cons: None, other than I wouldn't recommend going 939 unless youve already got the motherboard and ddr ram.
If you're building a whole new system go with the newer socket platform
Other Thoughts: When you overclock if you hit a wall try using different fsb/multiplier ratios, even if you're trying to get the same number. For example I couln't hit 3ghz with a multiplier of 11, but I did using 300x10. And of course be sure you're not topping out your ram or HT while you do it. Make sure you turn down your ram divider and your HT bandwidth to compensate for higher fsb. Took me a long time to figure that one out.

CCBBE 0617EPMW
Pros: Updating on stepping report: CCBBE 0617EPMW
After a few tweaks, I was able to clock in 2.8GHZ on this chip. I'm doing 280 x 10 , with 1.55 Volts. Had to turn down my PC3200 to 333MhZ in order to attain this. It runs FEAR, Ghost Recon, and the HL2 engine quite reliably. I haven't BSoD or anything. I'm currently idling at around 29c with a Zalman Cooler and a Silverstone TJ06 w/ Windtunnel.
Cons: None really. Common now, a 2MB Cache Chip @ 2.8ghz w/ a 2.6GHZ HTT. You can't beat that :)
Other Thoughts: Fast :)

Sweetly Beastly
Pros: This processor makes it so easy. If you want to play games and listen to music or intal updates go for it .Processes information perfectly. Love it so much.
Cons: If it takes time for you to load anything it probably isn't the processor. It would either be the ms rate for the monitor or slow internet connection. don't be mistaken please.
Other Thoughts: The price is well worth it don't let it discourage you.

Stepping / OC Report
Pros: Just a stepping report...
CCBBE 0617EPMW
Give you overclocker guys some hope. Most reports online show this stepping to average 2.8ghz or higher. I'm happy!
Cons: Didn't get it earlier
Other Thoughts: 2.8ghz X2 2MB Cache for cheap money

WOW, Dual Core is NICE!
Pros: This is an update to my original report of the stepping code I received. As of right now I'm running Prime95 Torture Test and running SuperPi 16M and writing this review -- WOW!
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: I was easily able to get this up to 2.5Ghz on air with the stock heatsink. I had to increase voltage to 1.4v, but the main limiting factor here is my motherboard (K8T800Pro Chipset). Below are my settings in BIOS for those who want em: 10x250 = 2500mhz Multiplier (10x) HT Bus Multi: 4x(800mhz) HTT: 250 Divider: 5:6(166mhz) Core Voltage: 1.4 Chipset Voltage: 2.7 Temps: 37C idle, 52C under load

Pros: GREAT PROCESSOR, OVERCLOCKS WELL, RUNS COOL. MINE LIQUID COOLED.
Cons: NONE
Other Thoughts: I HAVE HAD MANY PROCESSORS INCLUDING FX60 AND THIS ONE IS EVERY BIT AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN THE FX60. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO OC TO 2.9GHTZ NO PROBLEM. IS AM2 REALLY WORTH THE INVESTMENT? WAIT I SAY.

Just got it!
Pros: This is just a stepping report, for those interested in OC'ing.
Ordered 12/30/06, Rec'd 1/3/07 Stepping: CCBWE 0551 VPMW
Cons: None yet...
Other Thoughts: From most reports on the web, this stepping generally averages below 2.6GHz :(. Haven't had a chance to really test out the max clock on this CPU yet, but I will post again when I reach it.

overclocking 101
Pros: All of these CPU's have an adjustable multiplier. 11 is stock, and YES you can change that to a lower multiplier for reasons too numerous for a product review.
Cons: None - great CPU at stock speeds and for overclocking.
Other Thoughts: If you don't know the first thing about overclocking, then don't mislead others. Research is good for you, even if you plan to run this chip at stock speeds.

Pros: This CPU works great on my MSI k8T800Pro (6702E) Motherboard. Just upgrade the bios to the newest one and you are set to go. Very Fast too!:)
Cons: None really.

10x260? - Should be "11"x"XXX"
Pros: Reviewers state overclocking speeds of "10"x"260" for example when all AMD literature states that the first multiplier is 11. This would clearly change the math in obtaining the ending OC speed. 11x260 should be 2860Mhz unless I missed something.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Conflicting OC data on most forums.

Eh... Ok I guess
Pros: -More stable than my 4400 when OCing. -Does not take much to get it to 2.6
Cons: -Beyond 2.65 no matter what I do it's hard to squeeze more out of it
Other Thoughts: I like it because for the price I think it is still a good deal.
However I have high expectations and I still feel that I'm computing in the stone age. But I guess that's just me.
Overall it's a great processor and I would recommend it to anyone that already has premium 939 parts and does not want to buy a completly new platform yet.

very pleased
Pros: Hit 2.6ghz on air @ 1.45v 33C idle 39C load. 10x260 @ 4:5. If you're looking to make your socket 939 system last another coupla years, these opterons are the way to go - especially if you're an overclocker. Been very pleased with Oblivion on this CPU, compared to my 3700+ I upgraded from.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: It may not be fancy-pants C2D, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper if you already have DDR and a 939 mobo.

Love it
Pros: This thing is fast. Upgraded from a 3500+ and WOW big Improvement. Mobo recognized this right out of the box. No Bios update was need. Rocks on BF 2142. Opened all spyware and addware and ran antivirus and messenger and played BF 2142 not even a hicup. Just amazed. I decided on this after reading all your reviews, thanks. My son bought his dual core 4 months ago 4400. We ran his 3dmark06 with his 4400 then installedmine in his and ran it again, my opty scored better by 1876. No overclocking at all. Love this thing. Yea great price and grear chip...BUY IT!!!
Cons: Con's ARE you kidding????!!!!!! A NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Other Thoughts: Ordered this Tuesday sitting in my computer Thursday night, NEWEGG Kicks it !! You guys have never let me down...Really GET this CHIP!!

Nice CPU
Pros: Dual core Opteron. Excellent heatsink. 1mb L2 cache per core.
Cons: Socket 939 is on the way out.
Other Thoughts: Once I heard about the upcoming X1950 Pro AGP card, I figured my aging system had one more upgrade left in her before going into Vista. Newegg was excellent, as usual. Overclocked to 220x11 or 2420 (vs 200x11 stock) no problems. Can probably go higher but I really dont need it to. Just waiting for the X1950 now.

Overclocked out of the box 2.64ghz 11x240
Pros: This is a super fast chip mine overclocks to 2.64 without a hich. To get good overclocking you must have good ram.
Cons: Mine would overclock higher but when I up the voltage to 1.50v my chip won't boot it can only take voltage of 1.475. Im not sure why
Other Thoughts: This chip comes with a very nice heatsink it has 4 heatpipes and not only performs well but is one of the easiest ive ever installed.

Yes, it will overclock well
Pros: Great overclock potential, half the price of what it was a year ago, still hangs with todays high end processors if overclocked correctly.
Cons: None at this price
Other Thoughts: Contrary to what compucop says, this is an overclocking beast. Just because he can't overclock his, doesn't mean it isn’t possible. I’m speaking up because he may have scared people away with his review. When I got it a year ago, people were hitting 2.6-2.8 all day long, some were hitting 2.9-3.0. It's one of the reasons I bought it and not an x2. Back then, it had few reviews here and was still “underground”. Get yourself some good memory and a DFI lanparty MB and you'll easily hit 2.6, even higher if you spend some time on it.

STop whining about overclocking
Pros: Its an AMD, means quality, speed, and stability. Runs cooler than its X2 counterpart due to the silicon construction.
Cons: Price.
Other Thoughts: Listen up all you overclockers, the CPU is only a part in the big overclocking equation.
Chipset + ram speed + cpu + ability to lock AGP/PCI clocks + power supply + cooling = total overclocking potential.
Not everyone will overclock the same, but if 2x2.2ghz isnt enough for you, wait till AMDs new layout due out in a month or two, AMD 4x4 (2 dual core CPUs, essentially really a desktop 2u server unit).

Good for Multi-tasking
Pros: This is a very good processor for multi tasking with desktop applications. My computer doesn't lock up anymore. This processor seems to handle anything you throw at it with ease. I can tell a big difference between this processor and my AMD Athlon 64 single core cpu (1.8ghz)
Cons: Don't believe anybody who says that they can overclock this baby to 2.7 mgz. I could barely get 2.3 out of mine (210*11) and I have one of the best 939 motherboards and bios software out there (mach III 939agp with Award Bios)
Other Thoughts: Nice cpu, I think its slightly overrated though. never the less,I feel content with my investment.

Excellent!
Pros: Dual core server class 2x1MB cache processor, that pretty much says it all. Moved up from a Athlon64 3000+ and there is a marked improvement in everything. Rosetta@Home runs much faster, and multitasking is much easier. True capabilities wont show untill programs start being built in x64 archetecture (sorta like having an HDTV or a Blu-Ray drive right now, wont really be that great for a while).
Cons: The only con would be....THE WHINING OVERCLOCKERS! I mean people get these 175 and 180 chips and whine and complain about not being able to get them past 2.5ghz, but if you consider overclocking is a very tricky process, it invalidates the warranty on all your hardware, and that its generally not necessary (since the requirements for the highest program ive seen is around 2ghz, and since this is 2x2.2ghz...do the math). Stop whining about not being able to get 3 or 400 mhz more out of this thing, it wont be that noticable, since everything is bottlenecked by the slowest thing on your board. Its like having a 1000 gal/hr pump and a supply to it of 500 gal/hr, sure its nice having, but not necessary.
Other Thoughts: Look, if you want overclocking, get the freeking 165 and stop berating this chip because it wont go as high as you want, or better yet, buy a AM2 motherboard and the top of the line 100 series. As per Newegg's guidelines:
References to aftermarket procedures or installation techniques not mentioned specifically in the original product documentation (overclocking, hacked drivers, tweaking/modding, etc.). [are not allowed
THAT MEANS STOP RATING THIS CHIP ON HOW WELL IT OVERCLOCKS DA**IT!

Pros: Stable, pretty quick, dual core that should last till I can go conroe. Nice price. Runs pretty cool at stock.
Cons: Buy a 165, if you know what I mean. Seriously. Wish I had. I got a terrible stepping.
Other Thoughts: Haven't tried the stock 4 pipe sink, but i might...it's pretty good but could use a better 80mm fan than what it's got on it.

Still rocking
Pros: Still hangs with todays high end processors. Great overclocking potential. Longevity proven, even at high voltages, I've had it over a year running 24/7. Now, it's almost half the price I paid for it.
Cons: Price drop, but that's a pro for you.
Other Thoughts: Overclocked to 2.80 on water, but I have drop it down to 2.7 for games. 2.55v and 36 degrees. For desktop applications, I run it this fast 24/7 with no problems (including encoding). My memory (corsair XMS) is running at 570mhz (285 x 2) at 1t timing. When I benchmark it, it surpasses the mighthy core 2 duo (at stock settings)If you want to stay loyal to AMD, this is your proc.

Awesome CPU @ Awesome Price
Pros: 4 Months ago you couldn't get a San Diego 3700 at this price! Incredible buy! Get it while they are still in stock! This is a workhorse of a CPU!
Cons: You may have some difficulties with certain games that do not like multi-core CPUs. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your MOBO and any programs you wish to run.
Other Thoughts: First of all, do not listen to those people who give this low scores because the ones they bought did not overclock like they wanted. These are SERVER processors. They were made to be pushed 24/7 at full load. This is what they are for, and they rock at this task!

High performance/dollar ratio
Pros: Great balance point between power consumption, performance, and price. Easily overclockable.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Upgraded from a P4 2.7Ghz to this. Now I can run all the same apps that would bring the P4 to near unresponsiveness and this system acts like it's idle.

Pros: Fast and reliable Included cooler is right up there with the higher-end aftermarket stuff
Cons: Unsynchronized clock speeds between cores.
Other Thoughts: This thing is a powerhouse. It takes everything I throw at it with ease. With PowerNow, I can switch from my overclocked 2.65 workstation powerhouse to a cool, low power workstation if necessary.
One issue with this chip (and all dual-core Athlons and Opterons, for that matter) is that the clock speeds between both cores aren't synchronized. This causes some quirkiness with multi-threaded applications that require a high amount of clock precision, such as VMWare Workstation. The AMD PowerNow driver helps somewhat, but if you're getting an Opteron to run such applications, you may be better off with a dual-core Intel chip.

A workhorse
Pros: For engineering FEA, CAD, compiling, it rocks.
New games that support multi core are coming out. I get higher fps in Oblivion than others with same set up but only have a single core.
Cons: Price, but its understandable for the amount of technology in these chips compared to even 5 years ago.
Other Thoughts: Ran good at 2.6, but perfects stable at 2.5.

AMD Opteron 175 Denmark, Dual Core
Pros: 1st - FAST CPU. 2nd - Runs very cool with the factory AMD stock cooler. Averages 25 - 30 degress C under load. 3rd - 3 year warranty! 4th - Great price from NewEgg.
Cons: So far none. Not enough money in my budget to buy another
Other Thoughts: Runs stable, no hangs or BSOD under WinXP Pro SP2. Have not yet started overclocking, but from what others say, it should be a dream to ramp it up.

Breath of the Opteron
Pros: A remarkable powerhouse chip. Opterons are based on sophisticated frabrication technologies including sSOI (strained silicon on insulator)and high grade sram cache cells. Runs phenomenally cool: 22Celcius idle w/31C 2MB SuperPI benchmark load [@89seconds-stock speed]. Average casual multitasking temperatures are 23C-25C sustained. Retail HSF is industrial grade 4-pipe copper base with intelligent alluminum fin distribution. Very fast chip, especially at stock. Second core is very aggressive, yielding outstanding load balancing.
Cons: None at all. Otherwise, overclockers will yeild varying results, as it is determined by die cuts, build dates and motherboard/system memory architectures.
Other Thoughts: Those who are interested in fabrication quality and have thermal concerns should aquire an Opteron based processor. Also, the response time with an Opteron feels more natural and smooth. Some Athlon X2's, by production trends, are built with sSOI, which tend to function as cool and perform as smooth as an Opteron. But there aren't any ways to determine such builds. Nevertheless, Opterons have enhanced memory controllers superior to their Ayhlon X2 cousins, and when combined with the quality cache inherent of Opteron chips, performance is recognized.

Pros: Really fast, no system pauses running multiple applications. Runs my I-DEAS stress simulations much faster than a normal AMD 64.
Cons: Some gaming issues, had to turn down the overclocking to prevent Elderscrolls Oblivion from crashing, now its fine.
Other Thoughts: It ran fine at 2.6Ghz, had to turn it to 2.5 Ghz to run Oblivion, werid.
A bit pricey, but for a build your own workstation its a deal.

Great Processor,Very Fast
Pros: OC'd 9*285 with well lapped stock HSF and Artic Silver. CPU volt 1.5, HT volt 1.25 HT multiplier 3x Prime 95 stable (43C under load). Actually prime 95 stable at 9*290 but had strangle little glitches with network on A8NSLI Premium. With non stock HSF would probably go higher.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Definitely need to do some reading to get a stable overclock and also have some patience to try many combinations.

Does what it claims
Pros: Dual core, 2.2 GHz per core, runs cool (27i/38l) with A.S.5, Thermaltake HSF. Impressive stock HSF. Fast out of the box.
Cons: Hardly overclocks to 2.5 without a big voltage increase (+0.125v).
Other Thoughts: System specs: Opteron 175 2.2 GHz (220x10) @ 1.38v/HT Link 1100 MHz EPoX nF4 (9NPAJUltra) mobo 2 GB gigaram DDR500 @ 490 MHz @ 2.78v Seagate 80 GB SATA-II/WD 250 GB SATA-II XFX GeForce 6800XT

Not bad, 2.5+ ghz at stock voltage
Pros: Good overclocker, it has been able to run at 2.5ghz at stock voltage with out problems; dual Prime95 stable and everything. Using at 2.75 ghz 24/7 isn't dificult at all, maybe more later. With WC temp gets to be 38ºC with dual pr95. All aplications/games run better than with a SD @ 2.9ghz
Cons: Maybe the 165 and 170 have better performance/price ratio. The 175 I got isn't a great core, but even then its a really good overclocker vs. 4400+ Toledo
Other Thoughts: These cpu's are for overclocking, and as such some are better than others. The one I have is not a champion, but its a lot better than non Opteron dual cores. Watercooling is a must for these and all dual core when overclocking high.

Awesome.
Pros: This processor is great. I can do everything I need it to do. Heck I have to try to find stuff for it to do to see if it slows down. Nothing slows it. I got mine overclocked to 2.75 stable on air.
Cons: Absolutely none.
Other Thoughts: I don't know what the guy below is talking about. I had this at 2.75 stable with dual instances of prime. I didn't push it more so who knows what it can do. This was on air too with a little voltage increase.

Should of Gotten the 165
Pros: It doesnt Explode. Decent Stock. Very nice HSF.
Cons: Picked up this processor about a month ago with the hopes of getting it to 2.6 ghz. The max I could get it to is 2.5 ghz. Im so disappointed in this product. I spent the extra $xxx over the 165 in hopes of having a better start off point for OCing. Boy was I wrong. On WATERCOOLING it can't budge past 2.5 Ghz. Meanwhile people with 165's are getting close to 3 GHZ. Biggest disappointment I have ever purchased.
Other Thoughts: You are better off getting a 165 or X2 3800+. I may of gotten a bad chip, but I urge you to save your money and get a cheaper chip. I regret purchasing this chip on so many levels.

Why the Opteron
Pros: Very fast and reliable. Extremely nice copper base heatsink with multiple wicked (as in using a wick) heat pipes.
Cons: Comes with a thermal pad instead of thermal paste, and the pad on the heat sink is smaller than the head spreader on the CPU. I'd recommend buying some AMD approved thermal paste due to this small flaw.
Other Thoughts: This CPU is almost identical to the Athlon64 X2 4400+. The only real differences are that the Opteron series has a more stringent testing, and that the retail heatsink is different. You pay extra for the quality, not the speed, but the little you pay extra is well worth it.

Pros: Best CPU I've bought since I've been into computers... which has been since Zeos was around with their 286's. (DX baby!) Anyway... works flawlessly. Had DVD encoding, iTunes, Guild Wars & IE running, all with no problems or slowdown what-so-ever.
Cons: It's not ungodly fast, though it is a bit faster than my kid's 64/3700+ SD. We both have 6800 GT cards so it's a pretty fair assessement of the 2 chips. Other than that... It could be cheaper. All of this doesn't hinder me giving it a perfect score though.
Other Thoughts: Heatsink is quite impressive I must say. Especially for being stock material.

Jaw Drop!
Pros: Installed Windows w/ sp2 from a cd in 10 minutes! Insane speed, I decided to go all out and get this one instead of the 165 not that much price difference, and just that much faster it will be once it is done being overclocked. Very impressive heatsink for a retail package. Copper pipes and core, the rest are aluminum.
Cons: none yet...but i doubt there will be.

X2? No way!
Pros: The opteron was designed as a server cpu. What many people don't realise is that the Opteron 175 and the X2 4400 are nearly identical, its the superior silicon layout that gives the opteron way more overclocking potential. Also multi-tasks like a dream.
Cons: A little on the pricey side but if your thinking between an opteron or an X2, definatley go with the opteron.
Other Thoughts: AMD is discontinueing this particular cpu because of the fact that it would cut into the X2 sales. Kinda tells you something doesn't it? Get em while you can!

Powerful
Pros: I am amazed at the difference dual core makes. I use Vmware regularly and it never slows down. Handles F.E.A.R. and other games very well. Stays cool under XP90.
Cons: disappointed with the OC. Had higher hoes after reading many reports of 2750+. I reached edge of stability @ 2650, 1.45v
Other Thoughts: The 165 may be a better option if you can be content with lower stock speed, there is a good chance of reaching the same point on OC for $xxx less
