And when it goes to sleep, there's no noise at all. I researched several laser printers, and this one got one of the top ratings. Cons: I have had many issues running this with my Linux box (FC5) using the Samsun provided linux drivers. The printer will print 10 to 50 pages an then quit. I mean, it does what it's supposed to do and prints out papers nicely. I use toner save feature, and the prints out perfectly. Cons: Starting is mediocre and after done printing, it still makes noises. Other Thoughts: Haven't tried any graphics or envelopes yet. I bought it since it came with a large Single Feed tray and hidden Paper tray too. Using the Toner Saver feature you WILL Double your toner life and still get great pages. Cons: Always had a problem with the single tray uptake which needs to try 2-3 times to lift a envelope or small paper but 8 x 11 is fine. I just never got around to doing it under warranty. I was really impressed with the speed that it prints both text and graphics. Cons: This thing consumes a lot of power compared to my old HP1200n. I had to move one of my computers to another circuit and the lights still flicker. There are some minor problems with running the driver in x86_64 FC5 Linux. NCVeeDub Tech Level: high Ownership: more than 1 year	8/23/2006 9:13:31 AM High quality, inexpensive printing Pros: Cheapest cost per page in its class, very high quality printing, ability to handle everything from 3x5 cards up to legal size paper, accomplished handling of labels and envelopes, multiple emulations, strong Linux support Cons: Very slight banding on high-resolution images, absolutely no support for 1200dpi printing under Linux, large size for a home personal printer, awkward Linux driver handling of envelopes Other Thoughts: Samsung designed this printer to be a jack-of-all-trades. Besides the base unit, you can also add Postscript, increase memory to 144MB, and add a second 250-sheet paper tray. It supports PCL6, IBM ProPrinter, and Epson emulation out of the box, just in case you can't get the Samsung drivers to work (or don't want to), so it's an easy drop-in replacement for practically any printer you're using. Pros: Very fast printing, toner lasts forever in toner save mode toner is just now starting to go out after printing 10,330+ pages. Cons: Paper tray started causing paper jams when it gets low, about 1/4 full. No doubt this is due to the rollers, but a roller condtioner/cleaner should fix it. There's a binary filter that comes with the installation disk called ppmtospl2 used to convert information into a usable format for the printer, and it breaks on newer systems, possibly due to a library error, and could work if you old and old version of glibc, or if you dual boot an old version of linux. The quality is great, and the speed fantastic. It does exactly what a printer should do. Cons: It's a little noisy when it is getting ready to print, but once that's over, the noise is tolerable (no noise in standby) Other Thoughts: I use mine at home for most of my printing documents, and the occasional large pdf. Linux support a plus. Cons: Plastic is shiny and feels "flimsy", no LCD readout of status of printer (no big deal at this price point). Other Thoughts: I bought this in early April under rebate and returned the rebate right away. I got an e-mail end of April saying they had gotten the rebate but weren't expecting to send the check until July 17th. I've never had a rebate take 3 and a half months before! Cons: Didn't work with my SMC router-based print server. Could have been designed slightly better for space savings. Other Thoughts: I haven't done a massive amount of printing thus far, but for what I've done it's done a really good job. Fast, crisp, and fast. For the life of me I couldn't get it to work through my SMC printer server (would print once fine, garbage from then on), so I ended up hanging it off the back of my linux server and configuring it with cups/samba. It now prints without issue from linux or windows PCs on my network. The printer takes up a good chunk of space, which is a little deceiving from the picture. The back of it has the power supply hanging off, and then the cables sticking out of the power supply. This requires about 20"-20.5" inches from front of printer to the wall. Fast warm-up and print first page. Compact printer and lightweight. Cons: Linux driver install is GUI only. Other Thoughts: For my console only Debian server I had to track down an alternative way to get the driver installed. The printer is very light to move around. Installed it on my file server which is a Linux machine with very little heart ache. I would recommend this printer for the price. This thing is much quicker and quieter then my old printer. Cons: Newegg did not specify what voltage that the printer took and of course it only does 110v and I need 110-220v. very light which means it will break if you mishandle it. takes a bit to warm-up. However, that is no big deal. Other Thoughts: For my Linux Fedora Core 5 install, all I did was goto the Samsung website and download the Linux driver and run the install; very easy and had it up and running in no time. N/A Tech Level: average Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg	4/25/2006 11:40:25 AM Pros: Main draws were the price, enclosed/covered 250 sheet main paper tray, 50 sheey bypass tray, and the straight thru printing for envelopes and cardstock. Didn't really need the print speed or graphics quality (yet). Cons: While the printouts look very nice coming out I notice that the toner seems to smudge off rather easily, like it isn't properly fused. This occurs with any paper I use including cardstock, regular 24 lb laser paper, and 20 lb inkjet paper. This is my first laser printer and I am still using the starter cartridge (which I did shake properly) so not sure if it is common with this level of printer is something I am doing incorrectly. Hopefully this goes away since it is the only thing stopping business cards and brochures from looking marginally professional. Other Thoughts: While 20 lb inkjet paper will work okay, it does get a bit of page curl either due to the S-pattern path or the heat of the fusing process, or both. This might make it difficult to keep a lot of pages on the output tray before they get pushed off and gives an extra challenge trying to feed them into the bypass slot for duplex printing. 24 lb paper has much less severe curling and makes things so much easier. Fast processor means less time waiting for pages to process, and more time enjoying the 22 PPM speed of the printer. Paper handling is great, much better than any other printer in this price range. Can add extra memory and even an ethernet interface - unheard of at this price. Cons: It is a bit noisy, but I have it about 5 feet away from me and don't find it distracting at all. When you specify different print cycles, for labels or envelopes, for example, it takes a lot longer to print each page as it warms up and cools down between each page. Other Thoughts: After being a devotee of HP for many,many years, I decided to try this low-priced alternative and was very pleasantly surprised. If this printer last a while it will have been a steal. Prints fast and crystal clear. Looks excellent, very clean and small, makes home office look pro. Newegg had it on my desk before I clicked send. I love Newegg. Cons: Fan noise is a problem for home office quit setting. Fan turns off after a few minutes but until then it sounds like a small RC plane in the room. I will live with it for the price and performance. Shiny finish makes the printer look not so ugly compared to most printers. Cons: Image quality not great for photos, but for the price definetly worth it. The quality of the prints is great - I'm particularly pleased with the graphics for a printer in this price range. It is a bit noisy while printing, but it quiets down quickly and then is barely noticeable. Only some of these printers have loud fans. Out of 6 I have purchased only2 have that noise. The others are quiet as can be. EVen the ones with the noise are not too bad however. It cuts off after a few minutes and goes into sleep mode. The only issue I have is my printer crinkles envelopes up a bit. Still usable just crinkly. :-) Did you find this review helpful? The fan runs for several minutes after a print and it is a horrible cheap fan noise. Don't get this unless you work in a very noisy environment already. For me, they're too loud so I wanted to try something new for a client of mine. This printer is not quiet, but extremely quick. Startup time is faster than ML-1210, and print speed is improved. Very well designed unit, looks good, easily accessible feed and output trays. Samsungs have their drums part and parcel with the toner cartridge which means you don't have to worry about the additional cost when the drum goes bad, because you replace the drum with each toner change. Print depth (shade) is adjustible. Print is without distortion and clear. Sets up without much effort. Instructions are not in English, but the pictures on setting up the machine are good.
