Pros: It looked good, had a nice USB extension cable.

Cons: Worked for maybe 20 minutes. Would see less and less networks as it got warm.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this thing!

Rating + 5 Surprisingly Pleased

Pros: No problem getting this to work with an older ThinkPad running XP Pro. Unfortunately, I tripped over a cord and knocked the computer (with D-Link attached) off the table and onto the hard tile floor. The entire plastic casing separated and flew off the D-Link in different directions its board bent upward at a 40 degree angle to the USB connector. SURPRISE! It still worked! I completed a few more tasks online and carefully removed the D-Link. I was able to slowly bend the board back into position and reattach the casing. Tried again and it STILL worked. AMAZING gadget for the price.

Cons: Because the D-Link is wider than some pen drives, it blocks the USB port next to it. Not a huge concern since it comes with the stand that uses a narrower USB plug.

Other Thoughts: Worth the money. Easy to use. Very portable. After the mishap mine experienced, I'd say it's rather DURABLE, too!

Rating + 5 Cheap, Portable, and Easy

Pros: I've tried it with success on a Windows XP computer, a Vista one, and a Linux one. It works! Also, the signal strength seems higher in Vista for some reason. It's about the size of a pack of gum, so it's easy to bring to school, work, or wherever.

Cons: It seemed that my friends had a tougher time getting it to work (they had weaker signal strength connecting to a certain access point even when we tried nearby Windows XP computers, but he was still able to detect other access points); not sure why.

Other Thoughts: For the Vista PC, I just plugged it in, and let windows find the right software for it automatically. I also like the little dock for it that makes it stand up. The dock feels solid, and is heavy for its size.

Rating + 2 Don't bother

Pros: Price was cheap

Cons: - Signal doesn't pick up wireless network in a different room or floor in the house.

A- fter an hour of using the wireless adapter, it drops my internet signal. Although all the other laptops in my house can pick up my personal network range, this product didn't!!

It's frustrated the wireless adpater is not reliable for a simple task as checking email or browsing the internet.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't bother purchasing this b/c of the cheap price. I would spend a little more for a reliable wireless adapter which can work in any room of the house.

Rating + 4 Works great, but

Pros: Works great on my primary machine, paired with a D-Link DGL 4300. Easy setup, comes with a nice USB extender cable, so I can put it on top of my desk and see it.

Cons: Could not be recognized by my wife's older HP Pavillion, even though it claims to support USB 2.0.

Rating + 2 Worst Drivers Ever

Pros: It works. Barely.

Cons: The drivers provided by D-link are by far the worst I've encountered for wireless networking. They simply don't work, rendering the adapter useless. I tried them on every PC in my house (all 7 of them), and they don't function at all, even if I try downloading the most current from the D-link website. I even have a D-link router, so there shouldn't be any incompatibility issues.

Other Thoughts: I finally got it to work by removing the D-link drivers, and just letting XP find a compatible driver. How sad is it that Microsoft finds a better driver than D-link provides? Pathetic. Forget using it on Win2K; nothing works there.

Rating + 2 OK until it warms up

Pros: Supports WPA (DWL-G120 does not).
Extension wire with cradle lets you place it for decent reception.

Cons: Works OK for about half an hour before cycling on and off.
D-Link phone support is abysmal.

Other Thoughts: Don't bother using disk, download driver from website.
Suspect that the power requirement for this device is at the threshold of USB specs, am going to try a PCI adapter.

Rating + 5 Simple Network Plus

Pros: I bought this for my daughter's computer. It allows her to access sites such as Nick or PBS. It was simple to install, found a wireless network and connected without any issues.

I do like the option to plug straight into the USB or use the docking station. Keep it from small prying hands.

I as well receive a good strange single and the throughput seems to be just fine via the USB 2.0 port.

Cons: None so far.

Pros: I bought this for my my computer in the spare bedroom and after three months its still going strong. It has good range, and speed. Since that compter is only used for surfing the web and emailing it works great!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this as a low cost solution for connecting to the internet. NewEgg is awesome!

Rating + 3 It's okay

Pros: It's.....still alive. And it works, i guess. My router is a room away and signal strength hovers around 95%.

Cons: - NO VISTA SUPPORT. absolutely zero. I've spent hours looking for even the slightest bit of hope of vista support.
- It tends to overheat when a steady internet useage is upheld (bittorrent, lan gaming, etc.) When it overheats it drops the connection, and i have to let it chill for 2 minutes before i can use it again.
- the stupid program that comes with it, it plants a D in your tray, and u cant get rid of it no matter what.

Other Thoughts: Using it with a Dlink DIR-625 router

Rating + 5 Works for me

Pros: Works flawlessly on my G5 2x 2.3 GHz with OS X.4.9, My G4 350 MHz with X.4.9, and an old toshiba satalite 2010 with a 266 MHz pII. They all communicate and are as fast as a direct connection for internet on DSL. I had to download the mac drivers from D-link. Once I did, all was well.

Cons: None to date, very satisfied with performance on both platforms.

Other Thoughts: Mac users, don't hesitate, great performance, readily available drivers, great price compared to, say, a closer to home wirless system.

Pros: Works and integrates flawlessly into Windows XP... the docking unit it comes with is pretty awesome, too.

Cons: There is absolutely no support for Vista... do NOT believe the beta drivers on their site... they don't do ANYTHING! Vista cannot recognize them at all!

Other Thoughts: I'm sure the Vista problem will be resolved soon, but for now, it is an epic failure.

Rating + 5 Awesome Ralink chipset!!!

Pros: i'm the poster from the "Specialized Drivers" post below. After testing these out i have to say these rule. The b1 and c1 hardware versions have Ralink chipsets. considering that at least one of the other hardware versions ships with a PrismGT chipset, that makes this a pretty unbelievable buy if you can't inspect the hardware versions yourself.

Have fun!

Cons: no native mac driver that i can find, haven't tried to join through Kismac though.

Rating + 2 specialized drivers required

Pros: Some versions of this may have a PrismGT chipset

Cons: I bought a few with hw version b1. This may or may not have a prismgt chipset. these ship with specialized drivers that must be installed before the device. without the drivers, the power lights don't even turn on. effectively, this means that kismac and gtdriver can't even see the device. my guess is that it uses some non standard usb stuff so the os can't see the device through normal means. i tested this on an intel mac running 10.4 and the release version of kismac and a version of gtdriver ported to little endian.

Other Thoughts: yes, i'm aware that the mac is not an officially supported platform, but given the previous poster's comments about the prismgt chipset it was sorth a shot.

Rating + 2 No Support for VISTA

Pros: NONE.

Cons: Do not believe their web site. There does NOT appear to be VISTA support

Other Thoughts: Called DLink Tech Support. Tech was helpless. Had no clue how to even add drivers in Vista. Kept giving me XP instructions. Kept reading some script on her screen and could not deviate from it. When she couldn't figure out how to update drivers in XP decided adapter must be defetive. Returning this adapter and restarting my search for Vista support.

Rating + 5

Pros: Good signal reception, fast download speeds, Vista compatibility

Cons: High power consumption for notebook

Other Thoughts: I purchased this adapter because my Intel 3945 WiFi card had difficulty connecting to public WiFi access points. The download rate is very fast and it has no trouble connecting to any access points. The adapter has decent range -- neither extraordinary nor awful.

Using my notebook on battery power (and the regular WiFi card off) the "estimated" time reports about a 1hr hit.

The installation under Vista is very easy -- just plug it in and Vista downloads the drivers automatically.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the product and would recommend it.

Rating + 4 Good product for price

Pros: Just bought and installed my second one of these. Now I have them on 2 different computers in 2 different locations in my house. Both work great. Probably not as good as a DLink PC Card on my laptop, but close.

Cons: I have not had any problems with any DLink products over the years. However, their setup materials and instructions are not that great from what I remember.

Other Thoughts: I run my network on DLink DI-614+ I guess it's equivalent to the 524/624 these days. If you're on XP, do not install any router software. Only adapter BEFORE you put it into the USB port. On Vista, plug right in and you're ready to go.

Rating + 1 BE CAREFUL!!!

Pros: cheap, I guess.

Cons: Buyer Beware!!! I bought this here cause it was such a good deal. No so. The dongle seemed to be working fine, though the included software seemed flakey off the bat. But it found my network and jumped right on...several times. So the next morning I cut the UPC off the box and mailed it in. Spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get this defective dongle to work. It wont. Tried it on 3 different (Windows XP) systems, its recognized briefly then I get an error message. Now I am stuck with a defective dongle and Newegg wont refund me cause I sent in the rebate. Total bait and switch. No way would I recommend this product! Its cheap for a reason. A 17 dollar piece of plastic. And you can forget about OSX support, not worth the headaches!

Pros: Worked great when it worked

Pros: If you install the drivers first (in windows xp) then this device will work just fine. It also works fine with Vista, and Vista recognizes and installs it off the bat.

Cons: The range, though it is a small and cheap device, so you get what you pay for. I have not used the cradle yet. I just plug it into the back of the computer.

Other Thoughts: Not bad bang for the buck. I don't have any problems with it at all. Works all the time.

Rating + 5 Simple Set Up, Good Signal, Effective for Older Computers

Pros: I have an old house with plaster/lathe walls. My router is a D-Link DIR-635 (sunk my $$ in the heart of the system) which is three thick walls and a staircase away. The signal strength on the computer hooked to this USB adapter is consistent at 70% with MAX data pass through rate. I have not had the issues with lost connectivity/dropped packets others have mentioned.

Cons: Instructions are lacking for a newbie like me, but I was able to get it going after just a couple of minutes fussing with the included software.

Other Thoughts: Can't touch it for the money. Especially if you are limping along an old windows 98 computer like my decrepit but faithful eMachine. Most of the new adapters aren't backwards compatible that far.

Pros: Easy to install, works great for the price. Really like the little usb extension cord. Also, family likes the way it blinks on top of the PC - yet another plus.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: Use on main family computer for almost a year. I have set up about 10 or 12 wireless networks and this is so far the best I've used (easy and dependable). Other reviewers may have some issues with these, but I will buy more. Also, I am not a pro, I just do this stuff for friends.

Pros: USB, cheap, easy to connect and use.

Cons: Not great reception, not stable connection.

Other Thoughts: I use it for work, while repairing computers - when I have to connect to Internet using wireless network. Use it for not more that 10 minutes (mostly to download original drivers). Works great for me. Will not recommend for someone who want to use it on regular basis for Internet access. I'd suggest them to consider more expensive cards.

Rating + 2 Stay away from this POC!

Pros: Great practice in anger and frustration management

Cons: I plugged it into my brand new Dell and it could not recognize the device. After trying everything on the internet (I happen to have a laptop) for 3 hours, I could get it to be recognized only 10% of time. I called support, which put me on hold for 1 hour, and of course, transferred me to a Bangalore rep. After wasting 15 minutes of my time she admitted it was a common problem and suggested I return it.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from D-Link. Any company who churns out this kind of sorry product should be shunned.

Rating + 4 Flawless Design! Go Newegg!

Pros: First of all, this USB Adapter hitches up to 54mbps. This is way enough even though you have a T3 internet connection. The adapter works around the house like a charm. It works fine with one of the computers in the basement, yet the signal strength states tha it is low. This baby is connected to my Netgear WPN824 Ver. 2 which gives it the maximum range as possible. The cradle is definitely useful when finding a open space to wirelessely connect this to your router, this saves connection slow down, or lost of signal, and even better speeds as well by leaving it in open space. This adapter is highly recommended, especially to novices.

Cons: As there are many walls and doors in my house, the connection sometimes varies between good and low signal, but funny to say, the connection still performs faster than any other adapter I have used before. This adapter may sometimes take forever to acquire the IP address configuration on the router, may be because it is secured.

Other Thoughts: Even if the connection rates are low, the internet on this adapter is extremely fast! The pages load as it was a standard broadband connection, and can also play videos and or work simultaneously at the same thing. Over all this thing rocks!, just like Newegg!

Pros: The device worked well out of the box, but may may require some configuration to work properly.

Cons: See pros.

Other Thoughts: I bought this device to allow my two daughters to access my network printer from their rooms without granting them unsolicited access to the network (i.e. internet) because they are not hard wired. I had several issues getting their systems to configure with my D-Link D-524. Suffice it to say that isues can be complicated by such things as which service pack you are running, which services you have turned on and which drivers you have installed for this device (there are several.) Also, once all things were installed correctly I still had an issue with one of the systems preferring that the network adapter be plugged into the same USB port. Suffice to say that you may still need som e technical know how to get this or any other wireless network device to install or work properly. Issues will vary depending on the the system configuration. A+ Certified.

Cons: Wasn't as simple to set up compared to my previous experiences the first time around anyway. I could not get any connections if my router's SSID is not broadcast. My NetGear WGR614 V4 router has the latest firmware with WEP encryption, but this device will not pick up any signal if SSID is not displayed. After over an hour of troubleshooting with no help from the manual, SSID has to be displayed for device to get any signal connection. For extra security I don't like to broadcast my SSID for others to easily sniff out, so definitely a not a good thing. My Inspiron 8600 Intel wireless card, my Belkin PCI wireless card, my brother's D-Link PCI wireless card, and his Asus laptop wireless card can all pick up NetGear router if SSID is hidden, but not this device. Driver from D-Link.com doesn't apply to the paper manual step-by-step instructions at least it didn't for me after three seperate installs to be on the safe side that steps weren't being bypass accidently.

Other Thoughts: So far I'm very pleased with it's signal strengths and performance now that I know how to get it to function properly. I have my PC on standby mode and when it gets out of standby the wireless signal getting picked up is almost automatic. Browsing the Internet, downloading and uploading to and from the Internet and playing Guild Wars for hours with no connection issues. Other than the minor headache it gave me initially I am quite please so far with this product.

Pros: I don't have any pros, because it wouldn't work for me!

Cons: A warning to mac users: There is only one hardware version of this product that will work with your mac. It is H/Q Version B1. I got version D1, and the device does not work at all. So -- unless you're sure you can get version B1 of this device, you should probably purchase something else.

Rating + 4 Great for what it is

Pros: You can't beat this adapter's price. I get a reliable 48Mbps through two walls. My laptop gets only 36Mbps. Setup was quick and easy. The mail in rebate nearly cut the cost in half!

Cons: In my case, the cradle or what some may call the extension was needed. If I connect the unit directly to one of the USB ports on the back of my machine, I get no signal. When I run the extention behind my desk, placing it about 2-3 ft higher than before, I get respectable results. I guess that I can't complain though since my router is on the opposite side of the house.

Other Thoughts: This unit comes at a great price and performs better than expected. You can buy better but you will also be paying more! If you just want to access the Internet from a remote room, don't worry about getting a PCI card. It is cost effective and portable. You can lend it to another machine rather than having to get a PCI card for every computer in the house!

Pros: Works fine when you FINALLY can get it installed.

Cons: S/W leaves a lot to be desired! Does not like any other brand of router! Cust svc. reps don't have a clue what is going on.

Other Thoughts: If using with Linksys router, use the Linksys EasyLink Advisor, and the add computer option. Install the created pgm. on the box using the D-Link, Otherwise you will NEVER get it to work if you have a secure wireless network.

Rating + 4 Works better on a mac

Pros: Easy install, clear instructions.

Did some research and found that this wifi adapter is based on the same chipset as a ralink which provides osX support.

You get MUCH better reception/signal strength on a mac using the ralink drivers for some reason.

Cons: Poor signal reception on a pc using the provided xp driver. Sometimes had to restart the computer to get the card to see my wireless network.

Other Thoughts: Very affordable/quality Mac wifi adapter, but there's no "official" support since you're using another company's driver. For PC it's a hit or miss...

Rating + 1 They made me change the title

Pros: I could lie but there arent any. It even costs too much for what you are getting. Perhaps you could buy some Foil and speaker wire you would be better off.

Cons: Very unstable. connection ranges from 11Mbps to 36Mbps. I tested this adapter at ranges from 1M to 10M and never got a signal better than 36Mbps. The testing was also very unreliable because the adapter flaps worse than a bad NIC.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this It is a waste of time. I would not pay $x.xx for it If it was free i would only take it out of politeness then throw it away when i was out of sight.

Rating + 3 Too unreliable

Pros: Windows XP automatically recognizes and installs the drivers for the device, no CD is required.

Wireless USB adapter is very convenient, when it decides to work properly. Just plug it in and you're online.

Cons: Very unreliable. I have tested this device on three machines; one laptop and two desktops all running Windows XP SP2. This adapter frequently stops working for no apparent reason. The wireless connection will drop and the entire USB connection will become undetectable in Windows XP. In other words, it will simply appear as if there is no adapter plugged in at all. This means that you can't reestablish the connection to your router until the device decides to start working again. This could be a matter of minutes or days. No amount of nudging and shaking the adapter around in different USB ports will make a difference. Some reviwers have speculated that the defect is a result of the device overheating.

Other Thoughts: Having worked with computer networks for over fifteen years, I'm very suprised by the lack of quality from this D-Link product. D-Link are a reputable company which usually makes dependable products, but unfortunately not this one. I can't recommend it. Good luck if you decide to give it a try.

Rating + 1 overall rating seems misleading....

Pros: Can not think of any. I would say its cheap, but then what good is cheap junk.

Cons: It seems that these adapters have different chipset manufacturers depending how you buy them (bundled with a router or seperate). The better the deal it seems, the more likely this product is going to fail. My adapter came with a router and was super cheap and it acts like it. Range is horrible, it disconnects all the time, and often requires a daily reboot to start working again. Dlink support is about as good as their adapter.

Rating + 3 Pretty good, but not for gaming

Pros: This is a pretty good adapter if you are just downloading or surfing the internet. It is also quick to set up since you just plug it in the USB port

Cons: 1. Since it is a USB Adapter it doesn't have the best speeds that I would expect it to. Sometimes if you are surfing for a long time it will get considerably slower. It ranges from 12-36 mbps and my signal is usually very low to good, most of the time low.
2. If you are playing online games I would not recommend this because it is pretty slow and I have choppy performance.
3. The drivers aren't the best at D-Link site. I had no trouble with the ones shipped but when I installed the ones from the site it didn't work very well.

Other Thoughts: If you just like to use the internet or download anything then I would definitely recommend this. But if you are doing anything else that needs a strong connection then I wouldn't get this because you can probably get something else much better from D-Link for not alot more.

Pros: gets a good connection, good enough that i can run games like CS:S with below avg latency

Cons: serious driver problems. im runnin a pent 4 3.0 with a gigabyte mobo and windows xp. not the greatest of combos, but im hearin that thats not the problem. this adapter will occasionally either randomly drop the connection or give me a blue screen of death due to a driver conflict. i havent gotten a bsod since windows ME!!! the ppl at dlink made a few suggestions, but they kno theres a prob and have yet to fix it. overall, def not a good buy

Other Thoughts: if you wanna use progs like azureus (legally of course), you might wanna look elsewhere for your network needs

Pros: I gave it a 4 because it works and it was a breeze to set-up. I also like D-Link products cause they seem to work with most of manufacturers products, such as Linksys.

Cons: I'm not overjoyed with this product. It drops the connection from time to time and does not consistantly give me 54bps connections. However, to be fair, it seems most USB NICs suffer from this. It's a trade-off to some degree between convenience (which I was after) vs consistant high performance.

Other Thoughts: It works. And if you have a wireless setup that's not obstructed too much (like mine), you'd probably get your money's worth and then some.

Pros: low price, good range

Cons: not only consistantly drops the wireless connection, but even drops the wired connection

Other Thoughts: Maybe I just got a lemon. I recently go a laptop with a wireless card, so I decided to replace my old router (which has worked flawlessly for the past 3 years) with a wireless router. I never imagined that my wired devices (Win XP machines and an ethernet print server) would start having trouble communicating with each other. This thing is going in the trash.

Pros: It works well in close range situations.

Cons: To test the device, I installed it in a computer upstairs (our router is downstairs). It connected with a Very Good connection, but dropped every few minutes. When i moved it downstairs (where I intend to use it), I had no problems

Other Thoughts: I bought this for a short range connection so I didn't have to drill through expensive walls to run the wire. It is basically 20 feet away from the router with a pretty clear line of sight. In this situation it works very well.

Pros: Small, nice base to sit in.

Cons: This unit had very poor reception. I have used other DLink products, in many applications, so I did not have second thoughts about buying this. I am very disappointed in the performance of this USB adapter. The DLink router is about 30' feet away and unless I was holding it up in the air and directly in line with the router...I couldn't get above 20% strength. Luckily I have a door in view of the router because it is too week to go through the only wall seperating the two.

Pros: Easy install of software on XP and ease of USB.

Cons: I gave it a 4 because the range is not that great and the signal strength varies a lot and seems unstable. You have to set the IP addresses on networking properties from control panel or it loses the numbers and won't connect to router sometimes. Very annoying. Also, playing online games, the connection seems to "blink" on and off, also annoying. Went back to ethernet cable, problem solved. It works OK otherwise, but the range is less than the PCI wireless card with an external antenna of equal length. USB = 40% and PCI card was 70% signal strength. It seems as though the antenna sensitivity is just too small.

Other Thoughts: The USB extension mount is VERY heavy and does nothing for the signal strength that I can see and adds a LOT of weight to the laptop bag, but overall, it works enough for general web surfing. If you have a PCMIA slot, I'd use it instead.

Pros: The price is good and the setup was easy.

Cons: I used this adapter with a DI-524 router and got very low to no signal strength. The bad part is that the old b D-Link adapter that I was using before got better range. It was the same with and without encryption.

Other Thoughts: In the end I used a PCMCIA card to make the connection. This card was 802.11 b and was not D-Link.

Look around for something better than this if you need a lot of range.

Pros: This device installs easy, that's what I like about it the most. Just plugs into a USB port after installing the drivers and you're off and running. I just installed my second one and it was easy. The only brief trouble I had was configuring the WEP encription. I must have not typed it in correctly the first time. That was my fault, and not DLink's.

Cons: Some times it takes a minute to recognize and log on to my network. But it always does though.

Cons: None that I know of.

Other Thoughts: I use this with a Netgear WGR614v6. It is super cool! Do not let the low ratings and bad ratings confuse you. Wireless networking is all about the location of the devices.

Rating + 1 Arrived with significant problems, will return shortly

Comments: The installation DLLs have a habit of crashing winXP pro;
the card turns itself off after 120 seconds of connectivity (despite enabling the CAM mode),
and the card makes a connection with "excellent signal strength" to a nonexistant router. Problem has been replicated on several different computers, so I know it's not the PC that's giving the problems.

If you decide to buy this router:
1. Install the drivers from the Dlink website, not from the CD. This will keep the kamikaze crash-prone redundant and non-functional wireless utility from crapping up your computer. (It does not fully uninstall correctly either - regedit surgery is needed to excise it from the registry).
2. Keep your original packaging.
3. Cross your fingers and hope that you'll have better luck than I.

Rating + 3 WPA support is misleading

Comments: This adapter worked great with 128-bit WEP. However, multiple calls to D-Link support did not find a way to make WPA work even with a static IP configuration. D-Link said that WPA was only supported with the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration utility (not the D-Link utility), then told me to install a patch on XP SP2 that won't even install because it is part of SP2. Next they told me the adapter must be bad and to try a replacement. The replacement adapter didn't work any different.

On almost every call to D-Link Support the person I talked to was rude and acted like I was taking up too much of their time. Normally I've been happy with D-Link product, but their tech support is definitely not a selling point.
