Rating + 2 Don't Believe The Hype

Pros: Nice range, and can be flashed with better firmware.

Cons: They do not stand the test of time.

Other Thoughts: Owned 3 of these so I think I can judge their reliability. The first had to be returned to Buffalo after two months. Buffalo took nearly a month to replace it. The replacement lasted about 20 months (we are business oriented and not heavy users or gamers). Still I believed we were just unlucky and bought a new one. It came with foreign conf. pages and after an hour wait on Buffalo Tech S, told I had to return it. Linksys is just better.

Rating + 5 The Very Best 54G Router Ever Made!

Pros: This is the best Wireless G router sold in the USA period! Rock solid with any firmware. I've used one of my 4 units in extreme temperature conditions (-10F) and it never misses a beat. Excellent logging abilities, easy to use GUI, perfect if you know your stuff! Excellent 24x7 US based tech support is always worth a mention.

Cons: The documentation is somewhat lacking. If you don't have experiance with networking and configurting a router I would still recommend that you purchase this item. The tech support more than makes up for this con! They will have you up and running in no time.

Other Thoughts: This company is JiGiganormis in Asia. I personally own 2 of these units and have been recommending them for years. In fact I just had a family member toss out their old LinkSys WRT54G (that was totally flaking out after 3 years) and go with this. Immediately they noticed a difference in range and throughput.

Pros: The best router - for what it does - there ever was.

Cons: Short ftp window for initial firmware flush.

Other Thoughts: The new(er) Buffalo has switched to the Ralink chipset. (Unlike this router which is Broadcomm.) Its a very good thing since Broadcom couldn't hold the candle to Ralink.

Rating + 5 Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 - Best consumer router I've used, hands down and bar none!

Pros: This Buffalo Wireless-G High Power Router and Access Point WHR-HP-G54 has served me faithfully since receiving it and placing it in operation a few days after I purchased it from Newegg on 14 March 2006. In the 3 years 11 months of operation, this router has not "locked" the connection, wired or wireless, even a single time. This router has always been used in conjunction with a Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP Ethernet Port Wireless-G MIMO Performance Ethernet Converter that was also purchased from Newegg on the same date. The security and flawless performance of these two devices when using Buffalo's AirStation One-Touch Secure System (AOSS) are the only reason I have not replaced the stock firmware with an open source alternative such as DD-WRT. As for signal power and sensitivity, this router is in the basement and my notebook computer can connect to it wirelessly from any room on either the first or second floor.

Cons: Although it worked out of the box, I changed settings to configure NAT, DHCP, and other parameters to suit my application. Effecting several configuration setting changes in the stock firmware in one sitting is a tedious process as you have to wait for the router to be restarted (automatically by the firmware) after nearly each and every change. The firmware in other routers I have used take a different approach: they allow you to postpone the restart until all desired changes, or at least all desired changes on a given page, have been indicated.

Other Thoughts: Although the firmware makes extensive reconfiguration of this router a tedious process, the flawless operation of the configured router makes it a true "set it and forget it" device. Before purchasing this router, I had owned models from Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear and all had "locked" the connection at times, requiring power cycling to reset. The flawless performance of this router in stark contrast to my experiences with the other brands, and fear of repeating those experiences, have kept me from replacing the WHR-HP-G54 with a Wireless-N gigabit router. I have been spoiled by a product that has set the standard of operation against which all other routers should be measured.

Rating + 5 Customizable Beauty

Pros: Highly customizable, very high powered radio, plenty of RAM, removable antenna

Cons: Lousy docs and stock firmware...doesn't do 'N', but I guess that's a different product.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this unit with the intension of immediately flashing it with DD-WRT. It works swimmingly. I am extreamly happy with the power of the radio. In fact, I lowered the power on the radio. Despite the fact that the unit is at one end of my house, I am getting great signal strength at the other end of my 1600 Sq Ft house. I would highly recommend this unit for anyone interested in loading their own firmware.

Rating + 5 Awesome Router

Pros: Upgraded from a Belkin that kept dropping connection on the ps3 and have been completely satisfied. I got this router after some research and heard that Tomato was a very good firmware setup to run with PS3. It has amazing speed and it is super stable. I haven't had it for too long but I have yet to have to reset it.

Cons: nothing so far. lil tricky to flash tomato on vista but that's not really a con.

Rating + 5 Very Happy

Pros: Works better than I thought it would. Had worries about flashing to Tomato but had no hiccup. Easy. Simple. Happy I bought this and paid 50% more than a cheap access point. I use this as an AP in front of Astaro Secure Gateway.

Cons: None. Not one. It's all good.

Other Thoughts: It works so much better than my D-link Di524 and 614. It works better than my Netgear MR814V2, and better than my Belkin F5D7230-4 V2000. The security options work wonderfully. It's obviously faster. The GUI is understandable and the site survey turned up a lot of stuff I didn't see before :-) What's not to like about that? To upgrade (it was an upgrade!) I just downloaded Tomato 1.27 and unpacked it to a directory on my C drive. (I am using vista 32 bit). There is a batch file included with the firmware. I unplugged the router after setting my NIC to 192.168.11.2. I ran the batch file, plugged in the WHR-HP-54G. The TFTP did it's thing. I waited two minutes with a stop watch. I set my NIC to dhcp and boom, I connected. My goal was to have high speeds with the capability to tie-down access to certain MAC addresses and only give them access during certain hours (yep, I have teens in the house). WORKS GREAT!

Rating + 5 Fantastic, especially with Tomato

Pros: Smooth reflash to Tomato gets great Quality of Service options so things like Picasa uploads, Mozy backups don't kill everything else on the net. Also great attention to detail such as the little retainer clip that keeps the power cord from being accidentally pulled out. Solid construction.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The router market is so competitive that I've run into several firmware releases that should have been tested more. After literally throwing away 2 routers because of headaches, I am now cautious. But this one, in combination with Tomato, has taken everything I have thrown at it without a glitch.

Cons: included software not compatible with 64bit win 7

also didnt want to find the DHCP address from the cable modem. Had to leave unplugged for a long period(i went to dinner so could have been shorter LOL) of time to reset it.

Rating + 5 Solid performer. The T34 of routers.

Pros: I have two of these, running Tomato firmware and operating in Bridged mode. This router is very stable and can operate over a long range. With Tomato installed, it's easy to configure and maintain.

Supports WPA2.

Variable wireless broadcast power.

Cons: Buffalo's firmware is mediocre at best. They should just license Tomato and ship units with that installed.

There is no way to mount the router to anything. The weight of a few Ethernet cables can easily drag it off a shelf. I've had to drill holes in a shelf and use zip ties to hold one in place.

Other Thoughts: This router does have two antennas. One is internal, and the other external.

Don't turn up your nose at this router because it's "only" G and not N. Chances are your broadband connection won't be able to fill a solid G-connection's bandwidth, anyway.

I found flashing the Tomato firmware to be straight-forward and painless. Just read and follow the directions on the Tomato website.

This thing WORKS! If you're tired of having to bang your head against the wall to get your home wireless to work, buy this router!

Rating + 4 Don't buy the Antenna

Pros: Great router, especially with Tomato firmware.

Cons: So while checking out they offered a combo for $5 more with a Rosewill high gain antenna. So I bite for only $5. But the antenna doesn't fit and NewEgg says: "We are strictly reseller. As we mentioned, we do not offer any types of technical support nor guarantee the compatibility of combo items we sell. The combo deal is simply the promos we offer"

Other Thoughts: And I'd always liked NewEgg so much. Never occurred they'd offer a combo with non compatible items. 15% re-stocking and I hve to pay shipping means it's cheaper to throw it away.

Pros: I've had the WHR-HP-G54 for five years. It has been solid the whole way through. Excellent coverage wirelessly, small footprint, and still sexy sitting under my work area!

Rating + 1 Buffalo WHR-HP-G54

Pros: It worked when it arrived. Newegg delivered in timely manner (like they always do!) Easy to install, it had a great wireless range and strength (about 40 feet away from my computer ).
Download times were respectable when D/L wirelessly.

Cons: Constant trouble w/ xbox live...with proper ports open. Even had my internet service provider come out and test both the internet, modem and router. Died after 6 months (think there's a short with the power) and after a week of no-response from Buffalo's customer service I went ahead and ordered a new one...waste of money.

Other Thoughts: When a company sends an automated reply stating they will respond within 48 hours and dont is just a slap in the in face. At least they could have had the curiousity to say that they were busy and it will be a responded to at a later date..I guess customer service isnt as what it used to be.

Pros: Ability to drop WW-DRT on it easily
Great signal strength for wireless
Easy to setup if used the default setup utlitlity for those with little computer or networking knowledge

Cons: Doesn't include WPA2 with default firmware, but easily fixed with DDWRT.

Other Thoughts: If you think you may want to try out DDWRT firmware, the easiest way to do it with this router is to do it right out of the box.

Rating + 5 Buffalo Router

Pros: I never though I'd be writing a review about routers. They do their job, they usually break and/or just do their jobs aquatically. This router, however, has been phenomenal and worth a review. It is not only priced competitively but is built with quality parts.

-Detachable antanae (You can buy a bigger more powerful one to attach to it if you want to increase the range)
-The stock firmware is superb
-Quality parts that won't die on you for a long time

Cons: This router was built and priced better than it's competitor's products when it first came out that it was hit with a patent infringement that resulted in an injunction preventing sale of this product for some time in the United States.

Other Thoughts: I did not know this brand (Buffalo) when I first bought mine with the intent of installing DD-WRT (Linux router firmware) on it. I chose this one because it had an open firmware design that allowed me to install DD-WRT with ease. Even without installing DD-WRT I would use this router before going back to the other routers.

Rating + 5 top router -- better than linksys

Pros: Rock solid. Compatible with Tomato.

*I don't use the software that it comes with, so I can't comment on that.

Cons: not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. looks kinda weird.

Other Thoughts: I absolutely cannot stand unstable wireless routers. You're using you laptop wirelessly and then boom, your internet connection dies. Then I gotta go to the other room, duck under the table, bang my head, all just to reboot the dang router. I've gone through netgear and linksys with this problem.

The linksys 54wrt was pretty solid but after a few months it grew increasingly unstable.

Then I got this Buffalo bad boy. I threw the Tomato firmware on it (which I also had on the linksys) and it was rock solid ever since I got it.

Highly recommended.

Rating + 5 Great Router!

Pros: *High Power Signal
*Very High Quality Components
*External N-Type Antennae, useful with an extended wired High Range Directional Antennae - (provided you get an SMA->N-Type adapter.)
*Small, Low Heat
Compatible with DD-WRT

Cons: *no Wireless N
*no gigabit ethernet

Other Thoughts: DD-WRT setup was tricky.
I used the tftp executable, not the installed one, or command line. just make sure to set your ip static before trying to flash, or it won't work.

Pros: Easy to setup, nice options, extremely reliable, and great range.

Cons: Interface could be slightly more user friendly.

Other Thoughts: This thing is unbeatable. It's slightly more expensive than the Link routers out there, but those *consistently* dropped my connection. The Buffalo stays on 24/7 and stays connected 24/7. I recommend it to friends and family, none of whom are disappointed.

Pros: This is a very stable unit. I own two of these, for differant houses. Both have been opperational for over three months, and unlike other routers I've owned, I haven't had to reboot them. Setup is fairly simple. I don't recomend using the setup disk provided. I used the online interface and am pleased with that. I have no need for tomatoe.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: For the money you can't go wrong. One of my routers is supporting 7 users. The only time performance loss is noted, is during heavy downloads, by more than one user.

Rating + 5 Strongest/ best wireless router so far

Pros: This is my first purchase of any Buffalo Technology Products. I can, without hesitation, say that I am very impressed with the overtal quality of both the G54 and 300 wireless router /access point units. The installation and degree of programable flexuiblity is excellent, the GUI layout is very well thought out and the actual strenth of the wireless signal is better than anything else I have used. Buffalo tech supoprt is without question is better than any (i can't believe that I'm saying this, but its true), tech suport I have used in the lat few years, patient, informed, quick, and thuorgh. Go Buffalo Tech!

Rating + 5 Excellent, especially with DD-WRT

Pros: external detachable antenna, really good range, works great with factory firmware, but really ROCKS with DD-WRT firmware. Cheaper than the inferior Linksys products. I have standardized on this product with all my clients, over 50 in use and I am really happy with them.

Cons: I wish the unit had keyhole slots for wall mounting.
The "snap-on" base was not designed with the same thoughtfulness as the rest of the product. I usually do not use it anyway (they lay flat very nicely) but if you want to stand it up, it is not a great design.

Other Thoughts: Makes a great router, but also a great platform to use with DD-WRT as an Access Point.

Rating + 5 As good as N?

Pros: Raised transmission rate for laptop through 4 walls and 60 feet to the same speed as a wired desktop!

Cons: None really. Only the one -- hard to decipher menu labels when you surf to the router and try to set your security type and password. (note: 128 bit WEP is the default type the wizard on the included disk will do for you without surfing to the router yourself to get WPA). But, don't despair A bit of manual reading will help you get through the menu.

Other Thoughts: We had a good, cheap router (about 5 years old!), a Dl-524. But in the back yard for instance, transmission was poor. Now it's like being right beside the router, even from down the block. I don't think N would be much better. Besides, old laptops do not have N.

Now, let's hope that all the transmissions we're all be buzzed by from 19 sources are ok healthwise!

We do have a timer, so that our router powers off about 7 hours every night. (This actually helps a bit on security). Note that if you power off your router, you do not have to power off your modem.

Rating + 3 Needs better firmware

Pros: Solid Hardware

Cons: Bad Firmware, Struggled with the factory firmware for days and then gave up and installed Tomato. Tech support was US based but they did not fix my UPnP and NAT prpblems I was having with my security camera system. I was not able to get any ports to forward with the OEM firmware. I loaded Tomato and all my problems went away but my intent was to buy something that worked without having to spend 3 days hacking at it. So if I were getting paid for that time I would be about $1000 in the hole.

Other Thoughts: Buy the Linksys WRT54GL for about the same money and flash it with Tomato or DD-WRT.

Rating + 5 Perfect, Again.

Pros: Easy setup. Low latency. Good (not great) coverage. Easy NAT setup. Decent firewall for a router. It's nice to see Buffalo back selling their network gear. It's good solid stuff.

Cons: 10/100 ethernet. G speed (although jumbo frames is supported through framebursting). This unit at 100% wifi power is about equal to an Airport Extreme unit at 25% power in terms of coverage. Although it covers a 4800sq ft office when in the basement. 3rd floor shows 60% on average and outside it's fine. However it's no longer used for WiFi access (Get an airport extreme from apple, worth more than the pennies you pay). We are not using it this way anymore (haven't for the last year and half). APX shows 100% coverage from the same spot (on the same shelf) about 500' from the bldg when up to 100% power.

Other Thoughts: Good WiFi router on a budget. There are better. We have 2 in the office now to bridge two LAN's together. Setup was a breeze, as usual. We did however add an Airport Extreme Dual Antenna unit to the system as well because the WiFi, firewall, NAT, AirDisk, USB printer sharing far exceeds these simple units. HOWEVER what this was used for was right on the money and perfect in every way. It's jumbo frame support (4096) was needed for database files and since we already had one... It works as needed and we'll give it 5 eggs for it! If your gonna use it at home or office as the main router, 2 eggs. If your gonna use it as a Wireless AP, 5 eggs there.

Please note: When a slower device 802.11 a/b connects to a G or n system it brings the whole wireless system down to that speed. So using it as a A/B/G system on your N router, smart... Smarter would be to get a dual antenna system and set one for N and the other for slower systems.

Setup was a Breeze. No conflicts with other systems.

Rating + 5 Hands down the best consumer router

Pros: Third party firmware adds great features and makes them rock solid. I've put in place and managed over twenty of these routers for small offices and a school's wifi network. I have these running dd-wrt and they have been 100% reliable.

Cons: It's a bit light and the snap on base doesn't always fit tight so it sometimes it falls over when loaded down with cables. Doesn't come with the plastic wall mount like they used to. Not N speed.

Other Thoughts: I don't have much experience with factory firmware. In my first experience with them I used two of these routers to set up a point to point link with homemade antennas between two buildings about 1000m apart over two years ago. One is even in a shed outside with no A/C and gets terribly hot in the summer in Texas. I set them up and got the link working and haven't had to touch them since. Firewall throughput tops out around 30Mbps. Don't expect throughput like you would see on enterprise level equipment. Although I'd recommend these any day over SonicWall or Watchguard.

Rating + 5 Great solution to weak signals

Pros: easy setup with included firmware, option to flash a handful of different open source firmwares, two antennas and a signal amplifier make for great WDS option and strong signals, very fast operation, small size

Cons: port lights are on the back, gets warm, advanced features like bridging with WEP can be confusing to setup with included firmware

Other Thoughts: I am very pleased with this purchase. I've used plenty of wireless routers and this one blows the rest out of the water. I had to fix a problem with weak and intermittent signals, so I purchased two of these to use as a router and bridge/extender setup. I set up the two routers with the Buffalo firmware, one as the bridge near the problem area and everyone was online in minutes. Strong signals everywhere and the router is so fast it was like night and day! So far the Buffalo firmware does everything I need it to, I may even add another bridge to use at the opposite end of the house (it can handle up to 6)

Pros: Compatible with Tomato, or Openwrt/dd-wrt, which unlocks the true potential of this little beast. Buy it for reliablitlty, as well as funtionality.

Cons: Stock FW is absolutely useless. Do not try using this with stock/factory Buffalo FW.

Pros: Bought two of these a few years ago and flashed them with dd-wrt, both are still going strong, one as a hotspot in a bar/restaurant, and one in my home. I don't believe I have ever rebooted the one in my house, and no one currently working in the bar probably even knows where that one is installed, so they would have to call me if it ever stopped working...

Reliability is a wonderful thing.

Cons: Bought a new one this month for my Mother's house, and it apparently no longer comes with the nice plastic wall mounting bracket that I got with my earlier purchases.

Considering the price of this G router, I am disappointed that the bracket is no longer included.

Rating + 4 Great Router

Pros: Great router! Got this to a replace last year's Dual Band Apple Airport Extreme which was a hot mess and basically useless with Bittorrent. I can't speak to the preloaded firmware, but I stuck Tomato on there and it works like a champ. After playing with the quality of service a bit, I get great Bittorrent speeds that slow down when I use the web or or my PS3 for a really smooth experience. Can't recommend this highly enough especially considering the price. I paid $150 for the Airport Extreme with a student discount and had non stop trouble with it for 3 months. This was $60 with shipping and it's been smooth sailing. In addition to QoS, using Tomato this router can scan nearby networks and give you information on them (most importantly what channel they are using so you can use a different one). Add to that some great graphs on bandwidth and the whole package is a winner.

Cons: There are three down sides which keep me from giving this thing 5 eggs.
1. Flashing it is slightly harder than it needs to be. There are guides online but it shouldn't be so hard to flash the darn thing because you have to time things a little - it's not too bad though, it's just that the Linksys are easier.

2. It's not wireless N. My cable connection isn't fast enough for it to matter, but in the future I may get better internet. Still, fast b/g is better than non-existant N.

3. No USB ports. One port for a network drive or printer would have been great.

Other Thoughts: Overall great bang for the buck with Tomato firmware.

Rating + 5 Great Router for Tomato

Pros: Great Router for flashing Tomato 1.25. I never even booted up the stock rom...just do yourself a favor and download Tomato and flash it to this router. You then have some great control over extra features that you will never get from a stock router rom. I am using mine as a wireless client to share Internet with my neighbors. Works Awesome. The high power of this Buffalo really pulls in the signal.

Cons: Only wish it had a wall mounting bracket...just comes with a stand.

Pros: 3rd-party firmware. This is the major benefit of this particular product. It allows for a lot more freedom, and many more features.

Both of the ones I own have been rock solid the entire time, which makes it worth the cost over replacing cheaper routers all the time.

Cons: The default firmware on the first one I bought was terrible. I flashed the second one with DD-WRT without even bothering with the included firmware. I'm not sure if it's been improved since.

Other Thoughts: Currently the best router for 3rd party firmware. I'm hoping we get some quality N routers that allow for the same

Rating + 4 Good router-AP

Pros: Better signal than my previous router, a Netgear WGR614, at the same distance. Better throughput at similarly low levels of signal and signal to noise ratio. Removable antenna.

Cons: I took a point off because the brand new unit worked for about three hours at a fairly good signal level, then the signal dropped to about 1/4 of the original level. RMA'd it and got a new unit in about a week. It has had a good signal so far, for more than a week. Better signal on the second unit than the signal was on the first unit, even before it dropped off. I was really annoyed that a brand new unit became defective after just a few hours.

Configuration settings take a long time after you hit the Apply button; a note comes up saying how long you'll need to wait. Some things take 5 seconds; others take 71 seconds! I read about this beforehand in the reviews and I am planning to get dd-wrt.

Isn't 802.11n

Other Thoughts: The power brick with removable cord on the 120 volt end is nice, but working with a standard brick that plugs directly into power outlet is not really a big problem - just add a short, standard extension cord from the hardware store and you don't have to worry about the power brick covering up an adjacent outlet. Such a cord is inexpensive.

Rating + 4 Good Router

Pros: Loaded Tomato v1.25 no problem, then went to DD-WRT instead (more familiar interface for me) with no problem. No need to repeat other user comments and reviews.

Cons: 1. I don't know why they made the external antenna jack recessed in case, (or at least they could have made a larger recess) so some antennas (such as D-Link ANT-24-0700) won't install directly on unit and you have to use the extension cable and base. (and loose a couple db for connectors this way)
2. Factory firmware is encrypted.

Other Thoughts: Despite the minor cons, this is a great G-class router. No need to repeat other user comments and reviews. If not for the two minor cons, which many would not have an issue with, I would have given 5 eggs.

Rating + 4 Nice

Pros: Pretty much everything in other reviews is true. Tomato firmware is outstanding. Modifying the QOS settings sped up my Internet access by 300%. I upload a lot of video from home to work and my upload speed almost doubled.

Cons: It's only a single antenna and the included 4 dBi antenna has a weak signal through 6 walls in my single story house (about 35 feet straight shot). Turned up the signal strength in the Tomato firmware, but still didn't get an improvement. Tried an 8 dBi antenna which improved the signal on the other side of the house, but reduced the signal to closer devices.

Other Thoughts: On my old Linksys I had dual antennas, one 4 dBi and one 8 dBi which provided much better overall coverage throughout the house. If I could move the AP to the middle of the house, I'd get much better coverage, but it's a rental and I can't re-wire. The Tomato firmware is poorly documented, so don't use it unless you are tech savvy.

Rating + 4 I like it

Pros: Can load DD-WRT, OpenWRT, and others.
Strong signal, good sensitivity. Much better than any of the Linksys 802.11g routers I've owned.

Cons: The firmware that comes with the device doesn't support WPA2.
After using Linksys firmware, DD-WRT, and XWRT, Buffalo's web seems a little difficult to navigate. Not bad though.

Other Thoughts: I went through 3 Linksys WRT54G series routers. They'd work great for a while, then begin acting up. Purchased a Linksys WRTSL54GS. That lasted about a year, then began dropping WIFI connections.

I've had a Buffalo WHR-G125 running as a wired-to-wireless adapter without any problems for about 2 years now. No problems yet.

Given the reliability of the Buffalo WHR-G125 when compared to the Linksys routers, I decided to purchase a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router to serve as my primary. No problems yet, and signal strength is far superior to all the Linksys routers I've had.

Rating + 4 Very good, but requires patience during setup

Pros: Excellent signal coverage, small and compact size, doesn't use a "wall wart" style power adapter, compatible with DD-WRT and other third-party firmware

Cons: Changing any settings requires the router to reboot, replacing factory firmware can be tricky

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent router for home and small office use. Not only does it seem to have better wireless range than the blue-box "L" brand, but the signal is also more consistent and stable. I like the compact size, and I also REALLY like one aspect that is often overlooked: the power adapter. It's not one of those "wall-wart" box style plugs that covers two or more outlets. Yes, it still has a "power brick", but it is in the middle of the cord instead of at the end, so it can easily be placed in a more convenient location.

One thing that can be annoying, however...whenever you change any settings on the router, it has to reboot. Not just certain settings, but ANY settings. Usually it takes only about 20 seconds, but other times it can take a minute or more. This can be tedious, especially during the initial setup. Also, installing DD-WRT can be tricky, since it requires split-second reflexes to upload the new firmware via TFTP running on a connected PC.

Still, it is a good route

Rating + 5 Very Nice Unit

Pros: Good range, very fast for a G. I had a Belkin G setup and this blows it away. Very quick connection to your wireless clients and when it locks, it locks. No better range then my last setup, but much faster. Interchangeable antenna with a standard connector if range is an issue.

Cons: I set two of these up as repeaters to a wired router, wow, tough job. If anyone needs to do this, contact me at dannysdailys@aol.com and I'll send you written directions that I wrote up. Easy to do, if you know how to do it.

Other Thoughts: If you don't fall into the easy setup category, you'd better know how to get what you want. Nothing wrong with the units themselves, but they don't have specific instructions for setting two up together as repeaters from an existing wired LAN. That was the only thing missing from an otherwise excellent Owners manual. That said, I've done this type of setup before, but it was many years ago, and it was with access points, which is what I thought these were. Actually, they're 4 port routers/ access points. That threw a bit of a wrinkle in the mix. LOL I can't use the router function as I need an 8 port unit.

Rating + 5 It's great so far

Pros: Excellent range. Cool looking device. Others have mentioned this, too: Web pages seem to load a little faster, but it might just be that my old DI-604 was getting weary. All the computers in my LAN run some flavor of Linux and I was happy to find a router that was compatible with OpenSource firmware. I am keeping the standard firmware on it for the time being (see other thoughts). Manual setup through the supplied browser config pages was pretty tedious but I was able to set up everything I needed with them.

Cons: One thing that really surprised me: the password for the administrator is limited to 8 characters. It seems like everything you change in the configuration forces the router to reboot. That made setup take what seemed like forever. I felt a little exposed with the wireless unsecured for so long.

Another weirdness - status lights for ethernet ports are on the BACK of the device. I think I'll put a mirror behind it.

Other Thoughts: I plan to put Tomato or dd-wrt on it after NewEgg's 30-day return period is up, so I won't take off any eggs for the really dumb standard firmware setup pages. They get the job done, but I was always a little uncertain whether they would do what I thought they were supposed to do.

All told, though, I'm a happy camper.

Rating + 5 Best G router

Pros: Reliable. Accepts any 3rd party firmware. Fast. THE rock solid, tested router. If you want speed, stability and features look no further.. 10x better than Linksys due to the massively superior wireless.

Cons: Flashing to a 3rd party firmware can be problematic (Tomato took me a while to get going). Doesn't have N, but has more range and better signal quality than any consumer router on the market due to the signal amplifier built into it.

Other Thoughts: If you're having issues flashing this router to Tomato-
Unplug the router, set the Linksys TFTP app to 99 tries (I had version 1.255), went into the router web admin page and hit reset and it took the firmware immediately.

Cons: This will drop an IP with a Cable Modem if left set to Easy Set-up vs DHCP acquisition. Every setting change takes until the second coming of The Lord before the Admin Web page refreshes. Rating + 5 Best router for running Tomato

Pros: I bought this to replace an ageing WRT54G that didn't make it through our latest thunderstorm. I've run Tomato for awhile now and didn't seriously consider any routers that couldn't run it - I just haven't seen a better firmware ever. The Buffalo arriver quick, well packaged. I love the fact that it includes a small 'laptop brick' style cord, rather than a wall wart - much easier to find an outlet. The added amplifier and Rx sensitivity were my reasons for buying - so far I can't say range seems much further, but throughput around the house is greatly improved. I can now stream HD video files over wifi that stuttered on my WRT54G (8-10Mbit/s bitrates)

Cons: Not many negatives and no showstoppers. Here's what I can think of:
The stock firmware didn't impress me. Seemed disorganized and I get the impression no effort was put into GUI design - it's definitely an engineer's creation, not a designer's. I didn't give it more than a few minutes though.
The router is smaller and lighter than my previous one (WRT54G). This isn't a benefit in a networking device - some mass is a good thing once you load it down with wires and want it to stay still.

Both very minor points, I'd certainly buy again and suggest that others do too.

Other Thoughts: It's a great little router. Until Tomato supports some of the higher powered N based routers, I don't think there's a better router on the market.

Rating + 5 Best router I've ever owned

Pros: Exceptionally reliable connectivity, great signal strength (especially with built-in amp), third party firmware compatibility.

Cons: None, other than the fact that it wasn't available in the US for a short while--so I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get another one if my existing one ever failed.

Other Thoughts: I've also used consumer grade routers from Linksys, D-link, and Netgear--and this one is, by far, the best. After a horrible experience with a D-link DI-604, I finally solicited some opinions and bought this in the middle of 2007. It has been working reliably ever since.

Works great even with the factory firmware--but install Tomato or DD-WRT for some real fun.

Rating + 4 Good Router

Pros: 1. Can flash to 3rd Party Firmware.

2. Decent Range.

3. Reliable Connection when in range.

Cons: 1. Range is not as good as my D-LINK DWL-220AP (That failed after 3 years)

Other Thoughts: 1. Never really tested Buffalo Firmware, upgraded to Tomato v1.25 for first hour I had it.

2. Then changed to Tomato RAF firmware mod (v1.25.8515 ND) [wl0_corerev = 9 on mine] Slight improvement over Tomato v1.25.

3. Notice RSSI and Signal quality dropped when using WPA or WPA2 vs. open quite significantly.

4. Obtaining about 18 Mbps throughput.

5. Adjusting Transmit power did not really effect RSSI or Quality.

6. Enabling RX Sensitivity increased RSSI and quality.

7. Had no luck with AfterBurner Enabled, Transmit rate decreased.

8. Adapters tested: Netgear WG511T (2); Edimax EW-7128g (2); TRENDnet TEW-443PI (1)

Rating + 3 Great if you can talk to it

Pros: Leaving aside problems with configuration, it's reliable and the wireless signal is good.

Cons: Won't answer the phone. When I first got it, I had a hard time getting to respond at its IP address to configure it. After multiple tries, I finally got in and set up WPA security. It worked for a month or so, and then reverted to unsecured. Now, nothing I've tried (resetting and reconnecting everything -- modem, Buffalo, computer) will get it to respond. I've left a message on Buffalo's wireless forum, but no help yet.

So, it works great as an open wireless network, but no security is a deal-breaker.

Pros: Nice range and able to flash firmware.

Cons: Buffalo firmware is absolute GARBAGE!

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my work since Cisco routers are out of our budget.

The firmware that came with the router is the worst I've run into. It wouldn't save my settings, I had to go through hoops to enter in the static WAN address and it's close to impossible to program anything of any consequence (static address, port forwarding, etc.). However, it's easily flashed with Tomato firmware (thus flashing the warranty into oblivion). With Tomato, it's runs like a champ! Easy to program and, in my opinion, much better than DD-WRT. If you're looking for a router that works out of the box, pass on this. If you're OK with, and/or plan on flashing the firmware, go for it.

Rating + 5 Very Solid and Open Router

Pros: I've had this router for 2 years and it has never given me problems. There is signal in every inch of my house, garage, and yard. It is also very easy to upgrade, if you need to even though everything is great right out of the box. It has a removable external antenna, with an RP-SMA connector (most common kind). It also has 4MB of Flash memory so you can install the full version of DD-WRT. A lot of routers come with 2 MB of flash and you have to install the micro version of DD-WRT (which is still awesome). So yea, great router because you can do so much with it. I wish all companies made their products so open ended, instead of stifling innovation and consumer rights through proprietary nonsense. Why do I always start ranting? I guess that this means the review is over

Cons: It can't make toast

Rating + 5 Great Router

Pros: I did not use the software provided with the router itself. The reason i got this router was because it is supported by multiple Open Source Firmware. I never tried tomato firmware before so i thought id give that a shot. Installed tomato and set it up within 15 minutes. I get a perfect signal with great speeds and with the custom firmware it turns it into a 60 dollar router to a 500 dollar router.

I have owned and worked with quite a bit of home routers. I had a couple of Linksys WRT54G routers and those are great as well, but it seems like this router you really do get a signal boost and with the firmware you can actually control the actual transmit power in case you need a little bit more.

If you go with the linksys WRT54G or similar or this one youll be happy with it as long as you install custom firmware on it.

There is DD-WRT, Tomato, HyperWRT +Tofu. Any one of these are great and make your router work 1000x better.

Cons: It seems newegg is offering a combo with an external antenna. I recommend to not get this as you should not need it. And in fact i dont think it will even fit with this router due to the space to screw the antenna on.

The only time you should really need an antenna is for a wireless card with the call phone company and that would be a different router than this anyhow.

Other Thoughts: Again you must add custom firmware to this, the easiest one is probably tomato if you are scared to install firmware. You basically start the batch file and restart the router and it will auto upload it and install it.

Other Thoughts: I own two of these - one is 3 years old and one is 2 years old. They have been on 24/7/365 and they never ever crash, reset, or slow down. I also use two Netgear routers (614v7) and they both crash regularly, as did my older Netgear routers. I also have a dLink router from about 4 years ago that also regularly reset itself. I highly recommend these Buffalo routers.
Other reviewers have said that the setup is difficult. I disagree about the basic setup. Most people would be fine - the software for these does give you more options though and the more advanced options may take some more thinking to figure out.

Pros: I've worked with many different wireless routers, this was the easiest to load DD-WRT onto it. Very reliable and stable definitely worth the money. Extended range is noticeable and appreciated, seems to have a better thruput. Will definitely be using this again.

Cons: short LAN cord that came with it, but I can use it elsewhere.

Other Thoughts: Will use again, and will be recommending to other techies like me.

Rating + 5 Excellent hardware, flashable firmware

Pros: Very reliable. Firmware is upgradeable.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Don't bother buying the antenna Newegg currently has for a bundle offer: the router already comes with it out of the box.

This router is flashable with one of the open source WRT firmwares. My personal favorite is Tomato because it has a simple user interface, and gives you graphs to monitor bandwidth usage. I use a patched version (SpeedMod) which allows it to handle more throughput:

Rating + 5 Excellent When Combined with Tomato/DD-WRT

Pros: * Accepts third party firmware (such as Tomato and DD-WRT)
* Excellent range (so far, gets much better range than the Motorola WR850GP it replaces). This is likely due to the built-in amplifier.
* Works with all of my existing WLAN equipment (printer, wireless ethernet bridge and 4 PCs).
* Successfully connected to my devices in all combinations of WPA /WPA2 and AES / TKIP (my previous router didn't connect to an Atheros wireless card when AES was used; this one does).
* Antenna is removable and can be upgraded

Cons: * Marketed as "MIMO equivalent performance" even though it isn't MIMO (i.e. doesn't have multiple radios). They rationalize this by indicating that it performs better or equivalent to competing MIMO routers; this is probably true but I suspect some customers purchase it thinking it supports MIMO.
* Did not include a wall mount bracket. I wasn't planning on using it anyways but some may assume that it is included since previous versions included it.

Other Thoughts: I got the WHR-HP-G54 because I was struggling to get a good wireless signal in some parts of my house with my old router (Motorola WR850GP). The router is in a less than ideal location in the basement. The previous router left a deadspot that seemed to be caused by the water heater and air conditioner (presumably, which were blocking the signals). The WHR-HP-G54 doesn't have a deadspot even though it is in the same location as the previous router.

Some have said they theirs got quite warm; my doesn't but this is likely related to how much traffic it is handling (mine isn't heavily loaded).

I didn't use the existing firmware but upgraded to Tomato 1.25 immediately (was an easy upgrade).

Rating + 5 This router is a winner

Pros: Installed Tomato firmware on three of these & set up a WPS network in a few hours. Superb coverage, stable firmware. A few slow connections, but that's to be expected in any new setup. The experience over LinkSys & DLink is profound...it just worked right and keeps working. No reboots or anything pedestrian like that.

Cons: I guess I'd prefer that it came with Tomato...they're a bit pricey for a premium 802.11g router. Maybe some pre-N compatibility?

Other Thoughts: Tomato and Buffalo are a winning combination. It's just a solid router tha works. Maybe you'll get better speed with something else, but I'm looking for stable with my business clients. You can't go wrong with Buffalo/Tomato/DD WRT.

Pros: great device.
using as an access point behind Untangle box as an access point.
Simple setup contrary to what others say.
Small.
Awesome range.
switch on the bottom changes from router to access point:-)

Cons: warm under heavy use, probably a fan mod in its future
Have to dremel the case to add certain "combo" antennas.

Other Thoughts: NEVR EVR will I go back to Linsucks. Even though this unit does get warm under heavy use, it still stays cooler than my previous Linksys.
the switch on the bottom/side is probably its best feature.

Pros: Easy to set up as an access point, no need to tweak the firmware to disable DHCP or router. Just flip a switch on the bottom and this unit slips right into an existing wired network.

Cons: Not much.

Rating + 5 Stable, Stable, Stable

Pros: I have purchased 3 now of this router. Load dd-wrt, configured and up in running in minutes. Range is really good. Have the amp set to 70 or lowest setting and still get 4-5 bars in the deepest part of my home of 5000 Sq Ft., Security is great, Did I mention stable? I have had one running for over 2 years and it acts like I just bought it.

Cons: Not N
Needs different OS to get the most out of it
(I am struggling to find issues... its a great router in general)

Other Thoughts: The big brother Buffalo (WZR-HP-G300NH) OS is still questionable for stability and N is not final or I would have just bought it. WIthin the next year I will replace both G with the G300NH as N stabilizes.

I have an Untangle server as a front end firewall., gateway and what not. Use the 2 buffalos as access points in good spots in the house.

Recently configured rules to keep kids out of the Internet between 10 and 5AM for a friend. Was easy and locks them out by MAC.

Rating + 5 One of the best if you use alt firmware

Pros: Fast, stable, great range, reliable and cheap just about sums it up. This is my 2nd unit (previous was stolen from a job site) and I still have no complaints. Works great with DD-WRT and now Tomato (3rd party firmware) and gives a lot of features/function for the buck. This also performs better than my Asus WL500g Premium (comes with USB support), even if it doesn't support USB.

Cons: The firmware that comes with it is still lacking, which explains why Buffalo actually teamed up with DD-WRT to offer a router that comes with the DD-WRT firmware already loaded instead (WHR-HP-G54DD). Most buyers of this router know this and already plan on changing the firmware themselves once the router is taken out of the box.

Other Thoughts: They should make a version of this router that has 2 antennas instead of the 1 integrated and the other external. That and the wall mount kit needs to make a comeback in the box. My 2nd one didn't come with it (kind of a small bummer/let down), but the first one over a year ago did and it was useful for mounting/positioning.

Rating + 1 Buyer Beware of COMBO DEALS

Pros: I have been a Newegg customer for many years

Cons: Today I received my combo deal and the antenna does not fit the wireless device. I was told, "Unfortunately combos aren't guaranteed to be compatible, they are usually there for resellers to get a discount."

Other Thoughts: I have not seen this statement anywhere when purchasing combo deals. Glad I did not have problems with CPU\RAM\board combos!

Rating + 1 BAD COMBO DEAL

Pros: Great replacement for my very old Buffalo Air Station Ethernet Converter.

Cons: D-Link DWL-R60AT antenna combo deal (they just changed to another antenna in the deal) does NOT FIT THE BUFFALO Air Station!!!!! Same size threads, but the antenna has a MASSIVE thumb screw that make it impossible to screw onto anything that does not have the male threads sticking all the way out of the device. The Buffalo has the male flush with the casing, so it does not stick out, so the antenna cannot be used!
RIPPPPPP OFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!

Rating + 5 Couldn't be happier

Pros: As with everyone else, I had a WRT54G v8.1 (2mb flash, 4mb ram) and found it less than optimal. After searching and reading countless forum posts, I found this product and, I must say, all of the people singing the WHR-HP-54G's praises were completely correct.

I wasn't too impressed with the stock firmware, but as soon as I flashed dd-wrt (v24-sp2 build 12307 std) onto it, I was able to get it up and running very smoothly.

As an added bonus, it seems to have much better coverage than the WRT54G.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you buy this router, flash a 3rd-party firmware of your choosing--Tomato, DD-WRT, OpenWRT/X-WRT, HyperWRT, etc.--and read that firmware's FAQs and forums on how to best configure the router. It may take a few hours to get everything set up just how you want or need, but you will get more mileage for your money.

Rating + 5 This is the DEFINITION of bang for your buck.

Pros: I had a Linksys wrt-54g v.3 just like 80% of the reviewers on this board. Running dd-wrt (micro) just like 50% of the reviewers on this board.

Again, like 80% of the people who put on dd-wrt I didn't even look at the original firmwear. I did get a feel of how it acted, pings, latency, and range. It was a HUGE improvement over my old linksys. Not even funny... just HUGE improvement. I'm on a dsl 3.0mb (real speed test 1.5mb and real speeds 200kbps down 500up) (there are issues on my like outside my property. ;) ) Anyway, web pages pop MUCH much faster. It's suprizing really. DL speeds haven't changed but b/c of the router there is significant improvement in browsing. The wireless signal before the flash to DD-WRT was 2 bars while downstairs and outside (inside was 5 bars). After the flash to DD-WRT the signal strength is at 4 bars (very good). I haven't touched the option to boost signal strength and am using the stock antenna.

Cons: None for me since it is all I need.

Other Thoughts: DD-WRT or Tomato is a must. I've never used Tomato but I've heard it is good. DD-WRT reviews say is a bit more complicated. I'm used to it and there is a ton of info out there.

I'm using the router to a wireless music bridge in my garage. (downstairs and outside) And am using my laptop on my porch to connect upstairs/inside to control the music and it works perfect. Incredible.

Follow the instructions to flash the firmware found on dd-wrt and it's a cinch. 3 seconds is your wait amt. Got it the first time myself.

-- just saw the price went down again 8 bucks. Can't believe it as this is the best router under 90 bucks out there. wow.

Rating + 5 Hands down the best

Pros: I install home networks. I've used ALL brands. I'll just say that I use these at MY HOUSE. So easy to use and bridge with the WDS. I have the main router on the first floor of my house and that would be good enough to cover the whole house. But, me being me, I bridged one in the basement and one on the second floor. I have FULL speed through out the house and backyard. System has been running for about 2+ years without a hicup. You gotta love'em

Cons: Not on Buffalos' part but someone sued the WHR-HP-G54 and they were ordered to not sell them until the lawsuit was settled. Buffalo WON the lawsuit ! The con is ...I couldn't get them for awhile and had to use inferior products.

Other Thoughts: If your a absolute beginner, and cant follow directions or read, don't buy this . Settle for one of those "User Friendly" types

Pros: I haven't had to reboot the router once... Sure beats out the Linksys I had... Good solid signal throughout the house. I got one after I setup 2 routers at a friend's place to leap the connection from his place of work to his home. A good 150 feet and they connected strong and were not rebooted minus power outages over a year... Love these things...

Cons: N/A so far... I haven't delved too deep into its inner workings.

Rating + 5 Rock solid

Pros: Inexpensive
Reliable / solid built
Flexible use. Can use third party firmware for added functions
Powerful transmitter

Cons: No longer comes with the wall mounting bracket. I have one of these I bought back about 4 years ago and it came with the wall mounting bracket. Not anymore it seems. Maybe its an optional item you can get directly from Buffalo, don't know.

Other Thoughts: I had one of these for almost 4 years. Works great. As a matter of fact I set my signal to 25% power and I can get reception in all parts of my house including my porch. My house was built in the 1940's and is a solid two row brick construction with plaster walls. Its two floors and a basement. House is 18 foot by 42 foot and is about 1,200 sqft when you add all the floors (incl basement).

I bought this one to wipe it and throw the 3rd party firmware Tomato on to it. And keeping the original one as a backup and maybe use it for at a vacation house we may buy this year, or maybe not if market is still squirrely.

Pros: It works with DDWRT. I could get a cable to connect it to my antenna. RP-SMA to N

Cons: It is a little tricky to DDWRT installed on the router. Buffalo has some silly block to keep you from installing third party firmware, but I was able to overcome it.

Thanks Buffalo I needed that frustration!!!!

Other Thoughts: Would be a five, but not letting you do what you want with hardware you own is stupid.

Pros: Loves dd-wrt, super wifi range, supports several hundred concurrent connections with ease, mounting bracket makes excellent basement installation.

Cons: Could have more memory...but has enough for 99% of people's needs.

Rating + 5 Best Wireless-G Router Around

Pros: These things are amazing. Even without third party firmware, they have a lot of great features, including super easy WDS setup. They have an internal amplifier that gives them great signal strength and range. I've been waiting for these to be available in the US again ever since that patent injunction was filed against them. Now that they're back, I'm recommending these to everyone, even over Cisco.

Cons: I've had to wait this long to be able to buy them again.

Rating + 5 I've been using these for a while now

Pros: Perfect for DD-WRT, Tomato, or Open-WRT and all their derivatives. I have ordered more than 15 of these now, and all of them worked perfectly out of the box and I've had no trouble with them. I even dropped one on a hard tile floor and it came up no problem. The range on these boxes are very good. Better than some Cisco gear I've got out in the field.

Cons: Wish I had access to both Antenna. One is connected internally and has pretty good range even when the external antenna isn't attached. But would prefer an external connection point.

Other Thoughts: Great radio for flashing to something else. I haven't used the factory interface so I can't comment on that.

Pros: As the title says, it just works. This is the third time I've used Buffalo on an install and the third time I've been rewarded with a pain-free experience. It honestly took no more than ten minutes to set up and the stock firmware was able to max out the connection speed.

Cons: None that I can think of.
