Pros: Wasn't to expensive when i bought it and using other scanning software it does really good pictures, for the price i paid for it
Cons: My only problem with this scanner was that like the other reviewers said it had white spots under the glass when i recived it and they are very noticable when your scanning

Pros: This is the best scanner I have seen and I have owned several over the years. Great, problem free scans. The price is not bad either.
Cons: None.

awesome
Pros: this scanner is very fast with very acurate color and text reproduction. Bundled software does everything you need to operate this scanner to its fullest capabilities. Extremely fast scanning, even at 300 dpi full color. preview scans at about 3-4 seconds. I highly recommend this product.
Cons: non so far

Great all around
Pros: 35mm slides, 35mm film, large format film, pictures - all scanned beautifully with a single device! Tweaking the advanced adjustments in the scanner software gives you the best results.
Cons: Would be nice if it scanned more than 4 slides at once...many similar priced and comparable devices offer 8-16 slides at a time.
Other Thoughts: Very good product, particularly good bang for your buck.

Poor Quality Control
Pros: USB, Digital ICE, and film scanning. Accurate color after calibration. Remove grain and dust features work well when needed. Other features might as well leave off and perform in photoshop as needed.
Cons: Had to buy three before I got one without noticeable haze and dust under the glass. Still get discoloration at very bottom of the frame. Glossy prints that have white on them reflect to gray.
Other Thoughts: Newegg RMA process is smooth, even though you have to pay return shipping.

This scanner is sweet.
Pros: It is a low cost scanner with quality imaging. I've been scanning old black and white negatives as well as color negatives for the past week. Images come out clear and sharp, provided image was clear and sharp to begin with.
Cons: Has only locked up once on my 64 bit system. Drivers crashed.
Other Thoughts: On a system with 2 gigs of ram a dual core processor and plenty of hard drive space, it does a terrific job of scanning in multiple negatives and processing them quickly.

Great Scanner
Pros: Worked right out of the box. The software interface is superior to Epson's. Easier to use and offers more adjustment settings. I'm very satisfied.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: This scanner replaces a comparable Epson model, which broke because of an inferior design using plastic parts. This Canon scanner uses metal parts where the Epson uses plastic.

Problem but support is great
Pros: Scanner arrived and I made about 10 scans and then the LED power light went out and that was it. Being an electrical tech I measured the power output from the power cube and it was zero. So I got a bad power cube. I called cannon and after just about zero wait someone helped me and they are sending another power cube right away. I wish the power cube had not died but these things happen and I don't believe it reflects Cannon or the scanner. The good thing is Cannon support is fantastic and I would take that into consideration when looking to buy another product.
Cons: See above

good scanner :) very happy with it!
Pros: great scanner for an artist. TWAIN software works well on a Mac (be sure to go to Canon site for latest updates) and it has a good breadth of controls. quick scan time @ 300 dpi. cheaper than the local computer store's price and newegg shipping always fast.
Cons: a little bulky, big footprint. warm-up time takes about 10-15 seconds but that is only when it is initially started up. with any scanner, keeping it clean and free of debris can be a chore (air-duster!) especially if you have pets like me.
Other Thoughts: i thought i'd post this for any artists out there who like to scan their drawings for computer work. this is the best scanner i've owned. after going thru a couple all-in-one lexmarks, i decided to give a dedicated scanner a try. i've been very pleased. the detail it captures on hand drawn pictures is quite amazing especially at the higher resolutions. it beats the stuffing out of the lexmarks across the board with its clarity of detail, color accuracy, and software. i considered getting the Canon 9550F but opted for it cheaper cousin and i think i got more than i paid for. very happy with the 8400F :)

Couldn't Be Happier!
Pros: To get a high quality, multi-functional scanner for this price is incredible! I bought it to scan old 120 format B&W negatives for the 40s and 50s and it performs beautifully. I also have an extensive collection of slides and 35mm negatives I look forward to digitizing as well. It comes with adaptors for all three formats. This functionality is on top of all the regular scanner functions it is capable of. This is the only scanner you’ll ever need.
Cons: As other people have mentioned, it is shipped in its regular box with no additional packing. Mine arrived fairly beat up on the outside, so I was concerned about the jostling this delicate item had received. After opening and inspecting the contents, everything arrived in perfect order so the box is capable of handling the trip. Newegg knows what their doing, and if less packaging saves on the cost of shipping, I’m all for it. After plugging it in and trying it out, it scanned perfect.
Other Thoughts: Newegg just keeps upping the ante for shipping efficiency. I had this item for order to doorstep in less than 48 hours. That is just amazing!

Don't waste your money and time
Pros: Looks very nice...
Cons: The Canon supplied TWAIN driver did not work reliably (on Win2K). Google: CanoScan 8400F TWAIN Problem I did multiple uninstalls / installs of the Canon software, updated their software, tried different USB ports, set the Path different ways, followed what little instructions I could find on the Canon web site (hint: go to Canon Europe or UK) or on the WWW, etc. Nada. Sometimes I'd get a page or two scanned and then the 8400F would choke on its TWAIN driver again. A third-party program with its own TWAIN driver worked, but then the 8400F died. If it works for you out-of-the-box, you've got a good product. If it gives errors about TWAIN, not finding the scanner, etc. don't waste your time.
Other Thoughts: Given the number of positive reviews of the 8400F, I might have a bad unit. I didn't return it within the "30 days only" period, but thought I could get it working if I just tried "one more thing". NewEgg has always been good about returns, so this is my fault.
This was on Win2K, SP4. Perhaps XP users will have a better time.

2Thumbs Up
Pros: I had been looking for a reasonably priced film scanner to restore some wedding photos, and older family photos. After reading all the positive reviews here and having been satisfied with previous Canon products, I decided that this unit would probably fit the bill. IT DID! I am extremely satisfied with the hardware and software. The minor "cons" in some reviews, i.e. size and power button location were a non issue for me.
Cons: None so far.
Other Thoughts: Super service from Newegg. Ordered it on Sunday, and received it on Wednesday.

I love this thing!
Pros: Beautiful results. Good software package.
Cons: I don't like having to switch off the scanner when I'm not using it. It's too bad the scanner doesn't auto turn off and on like the Canon printers do.
Other Thoughts: It's a bit larger than I thought.

good scanner great software
Pros: Power switch, doesn’t sound like a big deal, but I love not having to unplug it. Fast start-up, previews scans are screamingly fast. The scan is fairly quick, depending upon resolution of course, very good reproductions. The best part of the scanner is the software. The imaging software is exceptional! I have yet to use OCR, or any of the remaining software, but I expect it to be beyond adequate. Entire package is priced fantastically! And of course, Newegg delivers before you expect it.
Cons: None to date.
Other Thoughts: I own a video and graphic design company, and needed to replace an old seldom used scanner. I didn’t want to spend a bunch on an item used primarily for scanning checks, so I knew this would do that and maybe some over-flow projects depending upon the quality. It is now one of my main scanners. The imaging touch-up software is outstanding! It has saved me hours and hours in Photoshop and on my last project, kept me from needing Photoshop completely! Is it a professional scanner? No. But it looks great and is an incredible deal for the price, good job Cannon! And as always thank you to Newegg for being a company I can always count on.

Great price - but watch the shipping - bare box
Pros: Great price newegg. Can't beat the price on most other websites. Did a multiple search engine/website search for this particular product (mid-end flatbed scanner) and found the price lower by quite a bit over the competition.
Cons: Scanner box arrived "bare" - straight manufacturers box without any other packaging. You'd think with this VERY sensitive equipment that they'd protect it more carefully. I've had many products sent UPS but never had one that was so poorly packaged.
Other Thoughts: newegg has the right to "reject" any review, so I highly doubt that this review will make it to the web.

Fast Scans But...
Pros: This is a very fast scanner that actually supports 64bit operating systems, sort of. It does a great job scanning both black & white as well as color photos and most standard size negatives. The bundled software (Adobe Photoshop Elements v:2.0) is nice to have. This device looks great sitting by my computer.
Cons: While I can not speak to the 32bit version of the drivers I can address the 64bit version. The 64bit version of the driver is TWAIN not WIA and has several bugs, read the read-me found on web site for details. This severely limits the functionality of the scanner.
Other Thoughts: If the driver was the same quality as the scanner this would be nearly perfect. Had I known the driver was TWAIN based, I would have kept looking for new scanner.

So far so good.
Pros: Scans 126 instamatic negative film (manually). Fast preview and scan, excellent output, quiet, easy to set up and use. Fairly good software bundle and twain driver. VERY inexpensive for what you get.
Cons: No actual film holder for 126 instamatic film, which I have lots of and need to digitize (see pros though). Black plastic center on top of lid scratches easily. Lid won't stay open on its own. Included Photoshop Elements is version 2, version 3 is the current version that's out. None of these cons are that big a deal though.
Other Thoughts: I've been looking for an inexpensive scanner that will do 126 Instamatic negative strips and this fits the bill. Still, I wish the software would do 126 the way it does 35 mm negatives (breaking it up into individual images and correcting the color). I can do this manually though. I am VERY happy with this scanner so far.

very nice
Pros: Very impressive quality.
Cons: I wish actual scanning could be as fast as preview (preview speed is so awesome!).
Other Thoughts: The hardware buttons are really useless, at least to me. I tested them once, and will never touch them again.

Great Buy! Fantastic Product!
Pros: This scanner is FANTASTIC! Purchased the scanner with the intention of scanning thousands of 35mm slides for digital preservation - and was on a budget. Scans four slides at a time - I load them in, click the mouse, do something else for 10 min, and return to save the files and change the slides out for four more. They make fantastic quality 4x6 prints. The software to cleanup the pictures is excellent. I’ve been very impressed by scanning regular documents and negatives too.
Cons: Not really a “con,” but play with the advanced settings to get the best results. The standard scanning options are ok for quick scanning, but SO MUCH MORE is possible if you are willing to spend a little time to fine tune the settings under the advanced tab.
Other Thoughts: The price is right, and NewEgg.com is the right company to buy from. Recommend having 1 Gig of RAM and USB2 for better performance.

The best scanner ever.
Pros: Really quiet compared to other scanners in this range of price. Good price for CCD scanner. Nice software included. Bright colors. Incredible ability to restore old protos. Even if proto became red with time, after scan you will not believe - all colors will be there like new.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Some people said that you can't scan more that 3200 dpi - not true. In advanced mode just type 0 (zero) in the resolution field and hit enter. The message is going to show up saying what resolution you can type in. You can manualy type 19200. But remember - higher resolution means slower scan speed.

GREAT FOR MED. FMT.
Pros: My sole reason for getting this scanner was for digitizing 6X6 negatives and transparencies... WOW! With post-processing in image editing software this thing puts out astounding results, especially considering its price. The most critical requirement for getting good scans is film flatness - pre-pressing curly film is a good idea.
Cons: Unless I'm missing something, one has to install and open a provided image editor to access the advanced scanning features. Also, when trying to scan single frames with a lot of darkness the scanner sometimes has difficulty finding the edges of the frame.

wow!
Pros: Quality of scans, ability to separate film and slides to individual files
Cons: Would like a printed manual as trying to print out the electronic one doesn't seem to work to well. I wonder if Canon has plans to make a different lid that would accomadate different size negatives?
Other Thoughts: Neweggs service again was great and delivery was on date promised.

Canoscan 8400
Pros: This is my 6th scanner in the past 11 years, and the best one yet. I do text scanning, along with some photo work. I use another OCR program that runs at 100% recognition on about half of the scans because of the sharper images. I have never attained this high a percentage on any other scanner, and they all were more expensive. It does photos beautifully. It cleans up and brightens newspaper photos, with more detail than the original.
Cons: The only thing I would like to have had is the abiltity to scan 14 inches for legal size documents, but I am perfectly happy as it is.
Other Thoughts: For scanning Newsprint, I place a black plastic over the top of the newspaper, which gives a much better copy. This method shuts off the reflection downward from the white cover of the scanner lid. That reflection can cause a big headache when you get into the recognition phase.

Great Scanner!
Pros: Lot's of features. Built like a tank. Software and hardware setup was a breeze. I love Canon products based on my purchase of scanners and cameras.
Cons: Size is quite large, but I actually like the way it sits on my table and shows off its brawn.
Other Thoughts: All cables included. I did a lot of old slides and they came out great. You can scan four at a time and the software that comes with the scanner is worth the cost of the scanner alone.

Unexpectedly impressed
Pros: * Fast and top-notch on normal scans.
* Some negatives result in output far better than original prints.
* Slides work very darn well, including correction ability for old/faded and/or low-lighting.
Cons: * A little on the big side -- nothing major.
* Slides and especially negatives take their time.
* Might take a little trial-and-error to figure out good default settings (especially slides / negatives).
Other Thoughts: Bought this first and foremost due to reputed slide ability. Couldn't be happier, especially for the price.
Bonus is that it's also great (and fast) for normal scans.
Excellent scanner, triply-so if there are slides (and maybe negatives) to do as well. Finally an affordable flatbed that can also truly do transparencies, too.

Perfect!
Pros: Does everthng advertised and does it well.
Cons: None! Well, it has a fairly big footprint, but that doesn't matter to me.
Other Thoughts: If you want to scan docs and photos or slides this is a great printer at a good price. The feature where it takes old, yellowed photos and makes the colors new again is amazing. Brought back a lot of memories for the wife and I.

CanoScan 8400F
Pros: 1)Good clear scans 2) Able to scan older negatives 3)Fast 4)Great price for the features
Cons: The only thing even close to a 'con' would be its large size. This is far outweighed by its attributes.

CanoScan 8400F
Pros: Easy setup, fast operation, great software slick features.
Cons: Somewhat flimsy holders for slides and film. No problem yet, but might find in the future.
Other Thoughts: I needed to purchase a slide scanner for old 35 mm slides. It was the perfect purchase for me and seems to provide excellent scans. I like the software that was bundled, expecially Presto Page Manager.

Good Scanner.
Pros: Quick scans. Great detail. Adjustable hinges in back raises the top portion.
Cons: The only thing I could say is its big.
Other Thoughts: I bought this as a replacement for an old off brand scanner that i recieved as a gift 4 years prior. It is a great scanner. Speedy and a quick warm up time.

Very Nice Scanner!
Pros: This scanner is great for scanning in old family photos. It does slides and negatives as well as prints. It has age color correction which really improves the quality for old photos. It also has scratch and dust removal. The software that comes with it is easy to use and my only problem now is finding time to scan in all these old pictures (from the 1940's on up)!
Cons: I haven't found any yet. It would be nice to have an auto-feed for all the pictures I'm scanning, but I doubt that auto feed would work well, since each photo is different size and shape, etc.
Other Thoughts: If you're planning to digitally archive photos, slides, and negatives, this is the scanner for you.

Pros: Very fast scan Very accurate scanning High resolution Very good job at restoring old photos automatically Good capabilities - photos, negatives, slides and of course docs
Cons: Fairly large footprint and heavy
Other Thoughts: I did a lot of research on scanners and found this one to be great bang for the buck from a relieable good name brand. It really does do a terrific job scanning old photos and restoring colors. The scratch removal works very well, too. OCR for docs is good, but not 100% but all things considered this scanner does all I want and more at a good price.

Incredable
Pros: This is the most versatile scanner I have owned or used yet. The image quality, speed and features are the best. The scanner also scans negatives in such quality that it gives dedicated film scanners a run for their money. I am all around satisfied with ever aspect of this purchase. I would not hesitate to buy again.

Great Scanner
Pros: Lots of features - the ability to scan film and slides is a very big plus for me - loads of included software all you really need
Cons: haven't found anything to really complain about
Other Thoughts: NewEgg.com is great to deal with great service reps

GREAT VALUE !!
Pros: This scanner is an awesome business scanner. Very high quality scans for documents, software auto converts to PDF files. What a bargain.
Cons: Man for the price, none. This is the scanner to get for business document scanning. Not too loud, just a little slow on 300/400 dpi scans, but it's too be expected on that level.

Great Scanner!
Pros: My wife wanted to get a scanner in order to scan in some old photgraphs. This scanner did the trick and even included software to help take out some of the noise. It replaced a Memorex 48U.
It does have a big footprint since it can scan a legal-sized document. It is not as quiet as the 48U, but it does scan fast and we could care less about the small amount of noise.
Cons: It is not as quiet as the 48U, but it does scan fast and we could care less about the small amount of noise.
Other Thoughts: It is GREAT. Newegg had it delivered QUICK!

Can't go wrong with this scanner!
Pros: Looks awesome and it blends in with the rest of my equipment. I Rather quiet, it is not nearly as noisy as some of the HP scanners I have used.
Really easy to use, the software included is great and definitely seals the deal.
Scanning quality is top notch, I couldn't ask for better. This scanner was purchased so all our photos on film could be converted to digital format so they don't decay over time, and I'm sure it will handle this task like a champ. Scanning at very high DPI makes the image files
Cons: Much to my dismay, the lock on my scanner was broken on arrival. Canon put in so much hard work with a bunch of tape and precaution notifications on the scanner about unlocking the scanner before using it and to make sure you install the software first, that it was sad to see the scanner top just pop open after taking the tape off. Chances are I won't even need the lock function, although it would have been nice if it didn't break in shipment.
Other Thoughts: I was considering the sleeker 500F because it was smaller and looks better, although this one has a little more power to it and I'm not limited on space. Definitely worth the extra beefiness in my opinion.

Simple to operate, lots of features
Pros: At this price, this is an excellent scanner - fast, not too noisy, easy to setup and operate. The built-in slide scanning is nice to have, although it's not this scanner's strength. The shortcut buttons for copy/print/scan are useful.
Cons: The scans are not "high end" quality. So image adjustment is required to get scanned photos to look like what you want. However, this is not that big a deal, since even for scanners costing a LOT more, you still end up manipulating the images often, if not every time.

An excellent, easy to use scanner
Pros: Very easy to use set-up for slides and negatives. The software allows for a preview (quick scan to chose which negatives/slides to scan at higher resolution). Before launching the actual scan, one can select some filtering/error correction (e.g. reduce scratches, dust) and of course, choose resolution. It can do 2 strips of 5 negs each or 8 slides at a time (or 4 6x9 negs at a time). This are positioned in plastic inserts that easily fit on the scanner. Once the original is scanned, the software allows for more corrections, editing, etc. This has allowed me to look at and print negatives that nobody had ever seen.
Regular prints/documents are easy to scan/edit and there is no suprise there. I tried the OCR pgm which works, but I have no reference and can't compare to anything.
4 convenient buttons on the front allow for quick scanning/copying (to your PC-attached printer) scanning-e-mail, scanning>pdf.
Cons: The scaning can get slow at high resolution (how about 15 minutes?) and the suite of software is not a model of integration, but it is quite rich.
Other Thoughts: The quality of the scan of 35mm film is very satisfactory. I had the opportunity to compare scanned negatives on my 19' screen with enlargements of 30x40cm (almost 12"x16") of the same negative. While there is a little loss it is definitely acceptable at that size, which means that anything smaller will have no noticeable degradation as compared to a direct enlargement.
With quite a few old negatives, slides and family picture books, I am booked for a few lifetimes, but it sure will make a lot of relatives very happy.

Excellent Scanner
Comments: Top notch scanner for photos Haven't used it for negs or slides yet.
Ther person that complained that it calibrated every time it scans should look in the advanced settings. He turned on the calibrate every scan setting himself, as it is set to not do that by default.
I replaced an Epson 3750Photo. I liked that scanner as well, but I gave it to a family member after trying this one.

Great scanner for the $
Comments: This is my first scanner, so I have nothing to compare it to. But the performance and bundled software are great for such an affordable price.
Only complaint is the location of the power button. The one-touch buttons are placed conveniently right at the front, but the power button is hidden on the back/side.

Lamp adjustment Really Annoying
Comments: When scanning @ 300DPI the scanner adjusts the lamp for about 45-60 secs before each scan. Gets a little annoying when your scanning in a hundred pages... Other thant that, picture quality is excellent and very easy to use.

Very Fast, Versatile, Great Quality
Comments: this scanner is just amazing at this price! i bought this scanner about 4 weeks ago to replace my aging epson 1200u photo that my father has now inherited, and i'm extremely pleased with it.
pros: + VERY fast preview (~ 5 secs) and fast scanning speed + 3200 dpi OPTICAL resolution (i'm not talking about some nonsense interpolation) + great picture quality + 4 external (and useful) scanner buttons: push [COPY] to copy your document rigth away to your printer; push [SCAN] to activate your favorite paint or photo editing program; push [PDF] to scan many pics right into a PDF file; i haven't tried the [E-MAIL] button, yet, so no report here. + backlit included + slide adapters for 35mm AND 120mm films, but i haven't tried those out, yet + incl. high-quality USB cable with ferrite cores to reduce EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference) + TWAIN driver is extremely powerful, yet very easy to use; when the advanced setting is activated, it's like a mini photo editing software with a plethora of options + heavy; feels robust
cons: - size (obviously, but that doesn't really bother me) - noise; but there is a "quiet" mode which will slow down scanning speed by half, though - 48bit color mode is NOT standard; it must beactivated under the advanced settings, and colors do get more vibrant! - 3200 dpi might be low for those emphasizing on scanning slides, but then again this is not a dedicated slide scanner!
Bottom line: this is simply the best scanner i could find in this price range and even beats way more expensive scanners. absolutely no regrets here!

No brainer!
Comments: This is a great scanner. Great picture scanning results! Software is not bad, just could be structured a little bit better to make it easier to learn. This is a very minor issue - and I'm still early on the learning curve! Given the price, performance, and scan quality - this is a no brainer. Read the reviews on this site as well as on the internet and you will find consistent praise for this scanner and Canon support.
This is the second product I bought from Newegg - they delivered everything as promised and in good condition. Good prices too.

Bundled Software OUTDATED
Comments: First things first, UPS 3-day select is FAST. All the way from west coast to east coast in 3 days. Ordered on Labor Day (Monday) evening, received at noon on Friday. Awesome!
The scanner itself is marvelous (previous experience, haven't plugged this one in yet). My biggest dislike is the bundled Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. This software was upgraded to v3.0 a year ago and according to Canon customer service, the bundle license agreement with Adobe was not renewed for the upgrade version, and thus they are still including v2.0 software. Disappointed, as I was expecting that this product would have software at LEAST within the last year, but licenses can be tricky.
There are no upgrade options out there for this software either, only full retail version/price, so seeing as how v2.0 pales greatly in comparison to 3.0 I will probably not even bother installing it (already have Photoshop CS but my wife wants a program she can use too, and Photoshop CS is too "big").
Also contacted the Adobe customer service about this, essentially reaching the same results - no upgrade, license issue with Canon.
Will probably post more results once I plug it in, but only further possible problems are really DOA or some other packing/shipping flaw, as I'm familiar with this product already. Great stuff, even in light of the issue on software.

Comments: Great scanner. Color profile is accurate. Auto retouch saves hours of removing dust and dirt. Ultra fast on scanning prints. Negative scans with high quality setting is slow but quality incredible. Comes with excellent selection of software inc Photo Studio 5.5, Photoshop Elements 2.0. Negative scanner lets you do 8-10 negatives at a time too.

Great Scanner, Confusing Driver
Comments: Cannon is known for its optics and this scanner just underscores that. Scans come out very vivid, and the slide/negative scanning works flawlessly. However the driver is slightly confusing. You have to put it into advanced mode if you want to change the default scan resolution (which I believe is 300). The scan/photo/copy buttons on the scanner are great shortcuts.

orginal and replacement same problem
Comments: I bought this scanner in oct. of 2005. for 8 months the scanning ability was awesome. Film Negatives, newspapers, photo's they all scanned perfect. Then the whole scan would come out yellow. I called tech support they shipped me a new one after failing to figure out the problem. The new one had the same problem yellow tint. I tried everything to correct. I called Tech Support and they sent me another one. This time it was fine. I do not know why two scanners would have the same problem unless there is a common error in the soft ware, driver, or the scanner itself. I will say Cannon was great on the replacements shipping to me free and including a free shipping lable back to them.

Great for film!!
Comments: If you have a bunch of film around like I do, this is the way to digitize. Great quality and scans 12 35mm frames at once! It also has adaptors for larger negatives. 2 1/4 I think. I have not yet tried that feature, but will after my next visit to my fathers old archive, which I wll be digitizing. Bottom line, this is a great scanner.

Great Scanner
Comments: This is the best scanner at this price range. I did a lot of comparison shopping, and found that this one did the best job for the money. You should take care to note that it only scans at 3200 dpi for negative scans, so if 1600 isn't enough for you. that's something you should take into consideration. Anyways, Canon's optics are awesome, and the images I scan are vibrantand pleasing, yet accurate. Highly reccommeded

Hmmm is WOW!!!!!!! descriptive enough?
Comments: Ok, I'll give you more then. I have been using scanners since my first 20 bit parallel port scanner 8 years ago. While it was a decent performer, it was time to move on. I've read the reviews here on this bad boy and thought for the price, I'm willing to chance it. I almost got the 4200F but this one was not much more and a PC magazine review said the difference in image quality was noticable. I scanned some of my negatives, and sure enough, the prints yeilded from that were of better visual quality than the prints received at the photo lab, with little to no tweaking in photoshop. I scanned an 8x10 school picture of my daughter and printed it on cheap everyday photo paper from international paper, photo jet series paper (well worth the money btw) and I'm not kidding when I say that if there is a difference at all, the scanned and printed version looks better. My printer is a dated HP Photosmart P-1000 too. This scanner is amazing. I'm using USB vs. USB2.0 and it's FAST!!! I can't wait to get my USB2.0 expansion card installed. Pros: Outstanding image quality with negatives and print scanning. Simple user interface both in stand alone and as a twain import source in photoshop. extension software package. Cons: Nothing is perfect so here is the best I can come up with: The default simple scan works well, but some settings do need to be adjusted to get desired results. But the good news is, once you set them, you can save them as default... hmm I guess that's a pro too. Just get this scanner and you will not be unhappy!!! Oh and Newegg got it to me a day ahead of schedule... AS USUAL!!!.

Fully Capable of 3200 dpi scanning
Comments: www.canontechsupport.com A previous reviewer stated that the scanner was not able to scan 3200 dpi. This is not true. This scanner is fully capable of scanning 3200 dpi. When in ScanGear on the Advanced Mode tab, In the Output Resolution section, type in the dpi '3200'. To see all the available dpi options, try enter '0' for the dpi and hit enter. It will then give you a message that tells you exactly what dpi values you can input.
Hope this helps everyone.

Nice but...
Comments: I just bought this scanner… Let me first say that I do believe this is a great scanner for the money. I am happy with it however there was a bit of deception in that this scanner is not actually capable of scanning at 3200dpi. The highest setting the included software driver will allow is 1600dpi. I’m not sure if the 3200dpi is some kind of marketing gimmick or what (like monitor’s advertised larger than they really are) but the bottom line is that I purchased this scanner over the HP5500 because it boasted a higher dpi. In hindsight, I would have gotten the HP.

Two thumbs up!!
Comments: Awesome scanner for the price. I'm a beginner when it comes to scanning and printing but this scanner makes me look like a pro. Film scanning is great. Takes about one minute per frame on negatives. I'm using an xxx printer and prints look better than the ones Wal-Mart did. Also comes with good software.

Canon rules
Comments: Wow! I had just purchased a Canon i960 printer that was amazing enough but this 8400F scanner really completes the system. I set the scanner up this morning and tested it out on some old negatives. It was easy. Whalah... not only did it scan 12 at a time but it even cropped them into separate pictures automatically. The included software makes it easy to remove scatches and adjust colors or effects. I then moved on to the regular prints. I put 4 basic prints face down on the scanner glass and I was blown away when I hit the scan button on the front panel. Not only did it scan the pictures but it opened the included software, cropped each of the 4 pictures into a separate borderless print, and automatically saved them to the computer hard drive. And fast. I just scanned over 150 pictures today and I couldn't be any happier with this purchase. I've never had a bad experience with a Canon product and NewEgg has been a great way to get them. I'd recommend this scanner and printer to anyone.

Great Overall Scanner
Comments: I went back and forth between this 8400F and the Epson 3170. Needed good film/slide scanning ability. I knew a flatbed would never be as good as a 5000dpi film scanner, but I wanted to get the best quality I could get for less than $200. This scanner does great with slides and negs. You must pay attention to dust and lint before you scan. There are some artifacts at 3200dpi with some slide film, lowering the dpi and using the grain filter takes care of them. Reflective scans are great. You'd be hard pressed to find a better scanner for the price.

Great scanner for great price
Comments: Very good quality for prints or slides. The scanner driver software needs to be played with to suit your needs...but once I got mine set...the scans were fantastic.

My first Scanner
Comments: Because I am a beginner I become a bit confused when it comes to the tect. aspects. I became even more confused after installing the scanner and turned it on and a box jumped up, informing me that the scanner would run slow because I didnt' have a Hi speed USB contoller installed. No idea what that is. As far as the scanner is concerned, I am totally happy with the results after scanning some pictures and negitives. A super great job. And Newegg is absolutely the greatest place to purchase on line. As usual, I got my purchase in 2 days.

Big guy, big performance.
Comments: At first I was just looking for a new scanner to replace my ol' reliable parallel port canon scanner. After considering the epson 2480 and the canon lide 80, I was moments from purchasing the sleek, affordable, conveniently small, solid quality lide 80. BUT since scanning resolutions are so great nowadays, I decided I wanted to archive the thousands of negatives we have from the past 20 years. I scan the negatives at 5.0 megapixel resolution taking 5 minutes each. It is slow, but the results are excellent. The adapter holds 12 - 35mm negs, so I quickly set it up and let it go for an hour. Great purchase.

Incredible Slides
Comments: Purchased primarily to scan the family slide library from the 50's. Incredible clarity. With Photoshop elements included, many shots printed look like they were taken yesterday! Can't believe how good it is!

Nice scaner untill it broke.
Comments: I had my first one to weeks and the top light locked up for the slides. Then canon replaced it with a rebuild that was all beat up looking and was never locked in shipping and did not work. Then they sent one that looked a bit better. That one lasted 3 weeks till the top light began locking up. So I give up at least the scaner part works just the slide light went bad. The scaner works great when it works very clear scans.

Terrific for negatives
Comments: I have had several earlier scanners, some with slide and negative attachments. None of them came close in quality to this one. I have had slides scanned commercially with lousy results and significant $. This scanner does it all, and well.

Incredible value
Comments: I bought this scanner to replace my Microtek that died after 6 years of service. I would have bought another Microtek but a friend really suggested the Canon scanners. This scanner is fantastic and really FAST! Even works really well with old Kodachrome slides. Buy one!!!

Comments: I bought this solely as a matter of budget and I have been pleasantly suprised on the quailty of the scans. I have a lot of negatives that I am archiving for storage reasons, and as a gift. Apples to oranges, especially after a big name store nearly ruined my negatives and giving poor results on the scan, this is the cheaper option... esp considering that to take them to a pro is going to cost me .75 per image locally and surfing the net about .50 to mail them out. This unit is cheap if you have more than 200 images to scan. There is a small learning curve to get the best results, but slip into advanced mode, tinker a bit, and you should be pleased with the results. Newegg rocks ... record time on shipping ;)

Great service
Comments: Ordered online and outstanding service. Five days and one hour from order to delivery. The time included a weekend, Wednesday to Monday, and shipment from California to Florida with regular FedEx shipping. Works as described and now all that is left is to learn to use it to its capabilities which are vast compared to my old Scanmaker X6EL. Thank you

Excellent Scanner!!
Comments: Bought this to replace an Epson 3170 that I bought to replace an older HP scanner. The Espon died after 2 days. Replaced it. The second one lasted exactly 3 hours before dying. Needless to say it got sent back and I got a refund. Tension belt or something kept breaking on the Epsons. Just my bad luck I suppose. Anyway....
This Canon is rock solid and fast. Easy install and setup. Software isn't the most intuitive, but it works well. Did some scanning of slides and negatives last night....they came out excellent. The slides seemed a bit washed out at default settings. Made a couple of changes and now they look great. Negatives came out looking great at stock settings. As with most things I'm sure they would look even better if I tweaked the settings a bit. Photos look great...really great. Haven't done any text yet, not a big text scanner. I have no reason to believe this scanner wouldn't produce good quality text scans though.
