Rating + 2 Ok machine, but not worth it

Pros: Sturdy, seems to have a strong motor

Cons: Manual intervention always required if you don't want alien looking wart bread

Price for performance, not worth the money

Other Thoughts: At this price point, you would expect a fire and forget machine. Unfortunately my experience thus far has not been that.

Mixes well and strong, but during rising, if the dough isn't handled manually to better kneed and distribute the dough in the pan, you end up with a lop-sided wart log.

With all the positive reviews, you'd think this was a slam dunk.......to do it again, I'd try the Panasonic, but the wife wanted the jam function so we did this one instead for the jam and for the fact it was best in breed.....wouldn't buy it again given the choice

Pros: mmmmmm... homemade bread! Works good and I was really surprised how well it kneaded the dough. Bread is always evenly mixed with no flour spots in loaf.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Hoping that is stands up to the rough beating it gives the dough.

Rating + 3 Zojirushi bread machine

Pros: Highest rated most versatile machine out there
Makes horizontal loaf

Cons: Very sensitive to amounts of liquids and type of yeast used. Failed after only a few months of use. I had to pay for return shipping to service center....very expensive. An overrated machine.

Other Thoughts: I wish I had not bought it...very disappointing machine

Rating + 5 Wow.

Pros: Solid construction and attractive. All parts included. Works exactly as advertised. Produces excellent product. Instructions and recipes included. Simple to use. Ridiculously easy cleanup.

Cons: The instructions could be a little better, especially where the kneading blades were concerned. I was worried when they didn't "lock" into place, and the instructions led me to believe that they should be secure. Well, evidently they don't exactly lock down. Potentially I could have damaged my unit pushing down so hard.

Also, the recipes aren't exactly for the complete noob (like me). I did use the internet to look up a couple things on baking. Y'all would laugh if I told you what they were. Like, was it okay to melt/soften the butter! Har har!

Other Thoughts: I trusted the reviews I found here on Newegg to guide my purchase. I'm glad I did. I took the maker out of the box, rinsed the pan, followed the instructions, pushed two buttons - WHAMMO! Perfect loaf of bread.

I can make buttermilk biscuits from scratch in a cast iron skillet, corn bread, too. But this was the first time I ever tried bread in a loaf. I was shocked. I had no faith that my first loaf would turn out perfect, but it did. Beginners luck?

Again, I followed the directions and recipe to the letter. The top of my loaf was perfectly level and smooth. I'm eating PB&J with homemade bread even as I write this. Dang, this keyboard is sticky.

Rating + 5 You've got your crust

Pros: Great control and great results. I don't know why a standard horizontal loaf is so much more appealing than a vertical loaf-- but it is.

After some tinkering I got this to make an excellent 100% whole wheat loaf, something I've never been able to do with any other breadmaker.

Cons: The recipes in the accompanying manual seem to be off. If I use the prescribed amount of water, the dough does not form well. I find I have to use 150% of the water called for to get good results. I wonder if it is due to the extreme arid conditions in Boston? Er, probably not.

Rating + 3 Good bread maker

Pros: Heavy duty; rock solid; makes big loaves

Cons: Still trying to figure this out, but it seems to make lopsided bread no matter what I try (not terribly lopsided, but more than I would have expected.) The paddles that are inside the bread pan are hard to clean.

Rating + 5 Breadmaker for Dummies

Pros: Hopefully no one is offended by the review title. I'm a great fan of the "Dummies" series, and this breadmaker makes a delicious loaf of bread when the directions are followed - even someone of my limited culinary skills can now bake homemade bread. I live overseas in a country that uses 220V power so I use this with a transformer. So far I've baked three loaves of bread following the recipes in the accompanying book, and they have all turned out delicious. I use local flour and yeast and am very pleased with the results. Local breads are not so good, so this motivated me to try the breadmaker. We have other Zojirushi products, so I opted for a trusted brand. I'm a working mom so don't have time (or courage) to make bread from scratch. I leave the leftover bread sitting out covered with plastic wrap. I noticed that the bread stays fresh all week - if it lasts that long, unlike store-bought which goes stale after two or three days.

Cons: I have had some difficulty removing the loaf because the bottom sticks to the kneading blades.

Other Thoughts: I was very happy to see that Newegg carries this type of product - I never knew til I did a Google search looking for breadmakers. Many companies do not ship to APO/FPO - Newegg does! Thank you!

Rating + 5 Great Machine

Pros: Makes excellent bread. Minimal effort.

Cons: Large machine, 2pound loaf is very tall, too tall for toaster! Bread can be very high calorie.

Other Thoughts: Two recommendations: 1) ensure the blades point to each other at the start of the process, this ensures they move the dough between them; and 2) check the water temperature with digitial thermometer, 100-110°F for active yeast, 120-130°F for rapid rise yeast.

Pros: Excellent construction.
Extremely easy to use on basic feature.
Very quite
So far great results
Made raisin bread, using light crust setting, came out perfect.
Power is 600watts, much less than using the stove.
Clean is is a snap.
Kneads the bread extremely well.

Cons: Would like more options for cook time as some breads did not cook in the 3:30 time for basic.

Rating + 5 YUMMMMMMMMY Bread...Great Machine!

Pros: I've owned several different bread machines in the past and feel like I have a good bit of experience with them. When the horizontal loaf machines came out I really wanted to get one. The last machine I had from another place I loved it but it wasn't made very well and had to be sent back within 3 months because it stopped working. I begin to research bread machines to see which one was the best made and less likely to have problems. I found that all machines had something negative about them, but everywhere I checked the Zo came out on top all around. I know I have only made one loaf in my new Zo, which was great buy the way. This machine seems a lot sturdier than the last one I had and I think I'm really going to be happy.

Cons: None so far!

Rating + 5 Perfect

Pros: Easy to use. Easy easy easy. I can't believe how simple this thing is to use to make bread. You DO NOT need to buy anything special to make bread with this machine. Ingredients from over the counter are layed out in the directions. Throw it all in the container and Voila! awesome fresh bread. I would recommend this to a friend.

Cons: Honestly, none so far. It advises to handwash the pieces and parts, but it's fast and easy, so that's not much of a con.

Other Thoughts: After much research, I decided on this model. I obviously chose to buy it at newegg for their customer service and my long track record with them. Newegg rocks! But I digress.

Rating + 5 Best We Have Ever Used

Pros: perfect texture and automatic! true horizontal loaf shape rises nice, double blades, strong motor, warms ingredients to perfect temp.

Cons: light crust seems a little bit darker then "light", higher price at 148.50, but if it last over 10 years, well worth it because it makes the best bread easily. We had a 60 dollar fail after 1.5 yrs-belt, the next 60 dollar after 4 yrs-motor, then a 40 dollar sunbeam after 5 years-heater.

Other Thoughts: We have owned numerous bread makers in past, the cheap 40-60 bread makers, which fail after 2-5 years. This bread maker makes true homemade textured bread with perfect rise results, all of our previous bread makers turned out bread that was denser then real hand kneaded bread, not the Zo! It's texture is perfect.

will update review in 3-5 yrs.

Rating + 5 Perfect Bread with practice

Pros: This machine like all has a learning curve. READ THE MANUAL. After the learning curve this machine puts out the BEST bread I've had, much better than our last 3 machines.

Cons: 1. Quick cycle seems to over brown the base of the loaf.

2. WATCH YOUR WEIGHT GAIN, this machine will put pounds on you!!

Cost is NOT a Con, you get what you pay for and this machine is worth MORE than the $190 I paid for it!

Other Thoughts: We've had three bread makers and what we found was.
1. All have particular learning curves
2. USE Approaved bread making ingredents, not just flour and yeast but Bread flour, Bread Yeast
3. Different yeasts for different breads
4 NEVER put the pan in the dishwasher !
BUY THIS BOOK: PERFECT RESULTS EVERY TIME!
Betty Crockers Best Bread Machine Cookbook.
My wife even made the rolls for Christmas and they were the BEST we've ever had!

Lastly, put the ingredients in the pan OUTSIDE THE MACHINE, if you slip and drop something your machine isn't nasty inside.

Rating + 5 Zoji is the best

Pros: Quiet! It's an expensive breadmaker, and worth every penny if you eat a lot of bread. Since it makes 2 or 1.5 lb loaves, you will have leftover bread you can use in croutons, puddings, stuffings and pasta sauce, things you never did with grocery store bread.
It is gratifying not to throw away stale grocery bread you didn't like it and didn't finish. There's a reason mold doesn't grow on that bread; it's pretty amazing to make something wholesome out of just flour, yeast, butter, sugar and salt. I've made beer bread before, but this is even easier. Bakers may scoff at bread machines, but scooping, measuring, and pressing a few buttons is pretty darn neat.
And it is Quiet. This was important because cheaper machines sound like a blender; try listening to that for half an hour. I bet that's one reason people stick their machines in a closet after a few months. The Zoji is quiet enough to be unnoticeable until you smell the bread. I haven't tried the non-bread settings.

Cons: It's big (something to consider), and it does beep when it's time to add special ingredients; I don't know what the other reviewer meant by beeping for five minutes; more like 5 seconds. Maybe they were using a special setting. However, it is inconvenient for time delayed baking in the morning, and would have been better if it could be turned off. I don't always add things to bread.

Other Thoughts: It is huge, so have a place for it on your counter, and a place in a cupboard when you don't need it. Or, leave it on the counter for others to admire. It is a Zoji after all, and is probably the best looking machine to boot.
oh, it's big because it bakes horizontally, and it has thicker sides, which seem to make it quieter.
I have the beth h. bread machine cookbook, and I reallly like it, especially the recipe replacement guide; I am a novice and it helps with ideas and experimenting. But the recipes included in the instruction manual work fine.
Cleaning involves soaking, so don't buy it if you don't like to leave things in the sink. Use a sponge for nonstick surfaces, the blue kind, not the green one you use on dishes and the sink.

Rating + 5 So Awesome!

Pros: This machine is excellent. I borrowed it from work briefly to make some bread and cakes, and it was so easy. Basically, pour the ingredients in the pan, plug in, find what you're making in the instruction manual, click a few buttons and hit start. The bakery machine will MIX THE INGREDIENTS FOR YOU! Once it is finished baking, the heat automatically turns to 'warmer' mode so your cake, bread, jam, or even meatloaf doesn't burn. Oh! and no bowl, mixer or counters to clean afterwards!

Cons: May cause laziness :)

Pros: Makes a great loaf of bread. What more can you ask for?

Cons: No interior light, how to use tutorial video is on VHS tape... I threw away all my VHS tape players years ago. Can you even buy them anymore? Very strange.

Other Thoughts: Cleans up easy. Recipes that come with it work great.

Rating + 5 Great Bead Maker

Pros: Horizontal pan. Dual mixing paddles. Easy to use. Flexible. Quiet. Makes an awesome loaf of bread.

Cons: Could use an interior light. Included "How to" video is lame. While some people think the price is high, I think you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: I have spent about six months looking at bread machines. While the price seems seems steep, I looked at this as a long term investment to help offset our shopping bill (1 teenager, 1 "tween" and 1 toddler). The bread machine has performed flawlessly each time. The bread is good, and has good texture. The best part, we know what is going in the bread. The hardest part is not devouring it right away when it comes out.

Pros: This machine has a pre-heating (20 or 40 minutes) which helps warm up everything you put in it. It is by far the only machine that has this feature, that I know of.

Rating + 4 Overbakes whole wheat bread

Pros: I like the dual paddle feature and baking in a horizontal position. With their horizontal bread, it seems like the loaves are larger. I love the citrus fruit bread cake recipe.

Cons: The machine always overbakes my whole wheat bread. It comes out dry, not burned. I've begun experimenting with the custom baking feature to shorten the baking cycle. Their 100% whole wheat recipe is basic and tasteless. I am trying my old vertical bread machine recipes from a different manufacturer that use bread flour, pastry flour and gluten in addition to just whole wheat flour.

Other Thoughts: When I used the cake recipe, the machine beeped for five minutes during the Add phase. I was on the phone and my wife was pretty hacked off about the disruption. This is set up like that by design, but it is way too long. I won't be using the timer to bake citrus bread while I'm sleeping!

Rating + 5 great machine

Pros: This is the Mercedes of bread machines. Zojirushi makes a rugged and quality product that should last years if properly maintained. Three friends from work have this and the predecessor to it and have own them for over two years with no problems except one of the three had to purchase a replacement bread pan ($55 + shipping). It's unclear to me if she was the cause or if poor QC was the cause.

Cons: Price is kinda high, but you get what you pay for with items like this.

Other Thoughts: Wash the pan out as soon as you get the bread out. Just let some water sit in it for 30 min or so and it'll clean up. Don't put it in your dishwasher and it should last. Biggest killer of these and rice cooker pans is dishwashers. 2nd biggest killer is morons who use metal utensils in them that scratch the non-stick coating. Our neighbors did this to our rice cooker and now it needs an pricey replacement.

Rating + 5 Worth every prenny

Pros: This appliance makes breadmaking fun and easy. This machine cleans up well and easily -- make sure to follow the cleaning instructions provided. I hear noise when the machine is kneading or stirring down the dough, but it is in no way annoying or inordinately loud. It is very versatile, with regular and quick bread settings, as well as settings for whole wheat, cake and dough among others.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: I recommend buying a really good cookbook, such as The Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook, in order to make the most of what this appliance has to offer. I've turned out loaves with this machine that has my cousin, who has a master's in culinary arts and years of experience, begging me to make more. Consequently, I'm buying one for her as a birthday present.

Pros: Easy to use if directions are followed. Care is easy also as long as the pan is handled with care.
Made 30 different types of bread and or dough with very consistent results. Solid construction

Cons: Price I guess, but you get what you pay for. Browns the sides of the loaf a little too brown for my taste but everyone else loves it here. No on off switch, must pull plug when finished. Not really cons but minor annoyances.

Rating + 5 Makes Bread. Yup.

Pros: This unit's horizontal 2lb pan makes a nice full-sized loaf. The controls are simple and direct. The included recipes cover a variety of types of bread. Unit is also very quiet throughout its break baking cycle. The two kneading blades help make a very consistent dough and loaf.

Cons: As the bread pan has an integral assembly for the two kneading blades, cleaning options are limited to non-dishwasher non-immersion methods.

Other Thoughts: It's one of the more expensive breadmakers out there, but zojirushi == quality.

Pros: The Zo keeps the temperature for yeast growth at an optimal level. It does this better than all the others. The two kneading blades are more effective than the single blade that was in my Br**dm*n Ultimate. Two blades means no more spinning doughballs. The bread also conforms to a more traditional loaf shape which at 2lbs makes a great loaf of satisfyingly dense bread. The shape of the cut bread fits my toaster perfectly. Though I have no interest in using this device for meatloaf, jams, and etc., it comforts me to know that it can do that.

Cons: There are still going to be holes in the bottom of your loaf.

Other Thoughts: Great deal on a great machine, Newegg gives the best price on more than just computer parts.

Pros: Before buying, I looked at many different consumer makes and models and I can honestly say that this machine is constructed the best. The two paddle system and horizontal loaf are big plusses.

Rating + 5 Best Bread Machine To Date

Pros: Excellent crust control. Durable and able to handle the most dense whole wheat doughs. Easily custom programmed. I just can't give this bread machine enough praise!

Cons: The only improvement that might be considered is that the area above the pan where the bread "pushes" up when it rises during baking could be larger or at least have a non-stick coating.

Other Thoughts: I forgot some water in the bread pan after a loaf was baked to loosen any baked on remnants and even this only caused some slight surface corruption. I would suggest that if anyone experiences any extreme non-stick failures they should contact either Newegg or Zoj. I have baking as an amateur, semi-professionally and professionally. I never thought there would be anything that would come close to handmade yeast risen breads till I found this machine. Examine these reviews very carefully. Companies, just like people are not perfect. One mistake or minour problem is no reason to condem anyone or anything!

Rating + 2 Why Bread Machines are Bad

Pros: If you have to buy a bread machine then this is the best one.

But don't buy a bread machine. Teflon is potentially toxic and bread machines can't function without Teflon.

Cons: Within a month the Teflon on the Zojirushi pan started to blister and fall off. It simply wasn't bonded to the pan correctly.

I've owned 3 bread machines so far (the first two were different brands than the Zoj). All machines have failed fairly quickly due to defects in the pan and pan mechanisms.

The first machine's pan lost its Teflon, the stirring shaft in the pan in the second machine fell out within a few months. And now this Teflon bonding failure on the most expensive bread machine.

Bread machines are simply bad technology.

Other Thoughts: When the Teflon on the Zoj pan started to flake off I decided to do some research on Teflon toxicity. While the Teflon itself is inert (although unpleasant to contemplate eating) it is far from a benign substance.

Teflon is made from toxic chemicals and when heated over 500 degrees it gives off toxic gases.

Search Wikipedia for:
Polytetrafluoroethylene

(Or just google for Teflon and toxic.)

Now a bread machine pan may not reach the critical temperatures for outgassing but do you want to take the chance?

Imagine small quantities of toxic gases being baked into your bread. Pretty appetizing eh?

Comments: Very good breadmaker. The only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that I owned a previous model for 12 years and had to replace it finally as replacement parts were no longer available. The previous model was better and quieter. The nice thing is that it makes a horizontal loaf rather than the verical loaf of the older model. Overall, very nice breadmaker for the price.

Comments: After trying several bargain bread machines, my wife wanted something better. After quite a bit of research settled on this model. We have been extremely satisfied with the quality of the bread, and the quality of this unit. It shows every indication of lasting for many years - we've had it for only 1 year so far, but it exhibits no signs of wear. The bread consistently turns out nicely; the unit is very powerful and has no problem with the densest batter. You can't go wrong with this one!
