Pros: 64bit hardware runs beautifully with it. ALways been stable with me. Never did it crash and only had to find 64bit Antivirus.

Cons: 64bit unsupported 32bit hardware/software CAN make it hard but didnt for me

Other Thoughts: Computers used on:
1 Dual AMD Opteron Tyan S2885 64bit, 4gb of RAM, ATI Radeon x800, 4gb of RAM Turtle Beach - Montego DDL

1 PentiumD 3.0ghz Asus P5WD2, 2gb of RAM, ATI AIW Radeon x1600, Sound Blaster Audigy LS
Both built from the ground up, Only the Turtle Beach card I had to switch from the AMD out and SB in due to being unsupported.
(Didnt not purchase off of new egg)

Rating + 5 Windows XP x64

Pros: 64bit. Double the appature meaning twice as fast as teh standard 32bit processors out there. Running speed is beautiful and responce time amazing.

Cons: Had to swap comps sound card with other comp.

Other Thoughts: 64bit OS need proper 64bit drivers to work properly with hardware. That includes ANTI-VIRUS. Norton 32bit coming with this should be complained about to microsoft or newegg, which ever decided to bundle it with it. Another note. x64 supported everything in hardware on my comp BUT the sound card. So if you are having mass compatability issues then you need to look up your comp specs.

Rating + 1 Think before you buy

Pros: It's Windows; it's easy enough.

Cons: Ok, so I jumped the gun and wasted $xxx on this OS before I really thought about what I was doing. I installed it on my new build and it worked just fine. That is, until I started installing my programs and software. Most of the stuff worked with some exceptions. The Norton Anti-Virus that came bundled with the OS doesn't work with the 64-bit OS. My wireless adapter software wouldn't work, either. There are numerous others that malfunction with this OS.

Other Thoughts: I'm really very upset with myself that I wasted my money on a buggy OS when I could've just got XP Pro and saved myself some major headaches. Do yourself a favor and get a better OS.

Sun Micro for prez!

Rating + 2 typical ms garbage

Pros: it didnt come with sp2!!I didnt have any problems with nvidia raid on my a8n 32x deluxe board.

Cons: SLI support lacking or rather non existent, booted slower then the 32bit counterpart on my dualcore 4400. definately lives up to the aclaimed blue screen of death reputation that precedes it. I have to say i was dissapointed SLI didnt work not to mention it didnt like 16x cards either. Lots of crashes from lots of programs not to mention drivers were almost non existent for alot of devices. I'd say this is a prime example of microscrap incompetence. Went back to 32bit pro no problems and boots up way faster also SLi works too.

Other Thoughts: Stick with the 32 bit version and dont be fooled by the microsoft bandwagoners vista wont be better.

Rating + 2 Just wait, maybe Vista will be better.

Pros: Can't really think of any besides it's 64bit.

Cons: With benchmark tests I get a whopping 1% improvement over XP-Pro X86(32bit). It's kind of lame with most of the scanners & printers I have, either no drivers or "beta" drivers that don't really work unless you pray and offer sacrifices, and then they still don't really work. Most all of my Video/Graphics cards have drivers that work but you generally have to download them 100% of the time. Older 32bit programs will not work with this. Many settings that I have for internet browsers are lost as soon as I reboot, that includes FireFox and IE6 (both 32 & 64 bit), not that it's a real bother but when I actually want to save passwords it seems to be unable to manage that kind of stuff. You kind of miss out on the little things that made web-surfing a little easier.

Other Thoughts: The Microsoft Office programs that I use seem to have less of a flaky response to the 64 bit OS. As a standard to judge besides the usual tests I picked a .tiff file to apply a Smart Blur filter to in Photoshop9 (102MB) and the same image took 65 seconds in 32bit and 61 seconds in 64bit on the same PC with the same memory (yes I did set the memory to 2.5GB out of 2.7GB in 64 bit). If I was running a dual processor server board I wonder if the results would be the same? You're still pretty limited when it comes to Anti-virus & anti-spy-ware apps. I guess you might say I was dissapointed with this. I can say truthfully that I've had far fewer problems with the good old 32bit XP-Pro.

Pros: Fast. As far as I can tell all the core windows components use the x64 framework to its fullest.

Cons: Its made by Microsoft ;)

Other Thoughts: All the Macromedia and Adobe suites work fine as 32 bit apps. I only get errors on cheap AV capturing software. All my hardware takes full advantage of the x64 architecture. If you get errors its because you cut corners when buying parts. You get what you pay for. Just give it time, more x64 software will start coming out.

Rating + 5 High quality..but do research first

Pros: Fast, stable, familiar Windows feel. Since it's based on the Win 2k3 kernel, it's even more stable than XP. 32-bit applications generally work seemlessly.

Cons: Make sure your hardware has 64-bit drivers. Also it won't recognize NVIDIA nForce RAID array's by default. If you do a google search you can find instructions on how to integrate the nForce drivers into the image to prevent having to use a floppy disk.

iTunes 6+ doesn't work, but older versions do. Many Microsoft powertoys don't support x64 yet.

Other Thoughts: Most people's complaints are due to bad or missing x64 drivers. nVidia has very good x64 support, and other companies are getting there. You can install iTunes 4.7 or so, and it works fine. Games work flawlessly, as do most applications.

If you're building a new computer, just make sure there are x64 drivers.

Pros: This product is great in terms of higher memory support..Most 32 bit applications will run on X64 platform. I used Symantec Antivirus 10 Corporate Edition on it. Great for Gamers..developers...and CAD Drawings.

Cons: If you don't have a high understanding of what you are running in terms of hardware or want to use this product for home use.. This version of Windows is not for you.

Other Thoughts: Can't wait to see how robust Windows Vista X64 will be...

Pros: It's better than Mac OSX

Cons: This version of Windows is widely unsupported by many software makers and developers. Finding drivers to work on x64 was about the hardest thing I have ever done. Can't even run basic programs like Quicktime.

Other Thoughts: Trying to get the x64 edition to work has been the biggest computer nightmare I have encountered this far in my computer building experience. I wasted 140 bones on this unstable operating system.

Pros: Excellent stability, absolutelly no viruses or spyware infections since installing.

Cons: Limeted antivirus /firewall choices,AVG 7.1 works great!!
But X64 & AVG7.1 only support one lan card.

You have to search for some drivers.
Try the Beta versions or server 2003's if your stuck.
Not so stable with some older games and apps.

Rating + 3 Unsteady Ground

Pros: Anything that is specifically made for 64-bit works better than the 32-bit versions did. Anything that is made for multiple processors is better than its single processor predecessor.

Cons: Not enough support for 64-bit yet. Many programs will install *alright* but be buggy. Many drivers are missing for 64-bit so check for drivers before purchasing any software or parts.

Other Thoughts: It's a lot different because you have to worry about crashes, buggy behavior and trouble finding drivers. There is no peace of mind like with my 32-bit XP PRO that has worked flawlessly for years now.

Can be great for someone who can take full advantage of it without the disadvantages.

Pros: fairly fast

Cons: compatibility

Other Thoughts: WARNING- not compatible with Xbox 360. Also Indigo Prophecy video game installer does not work with X64. Plextor DVD software did not work with it as well as some other programs. Stick with the 32 bit version, its not worth the hassle.

Pros: It's faster than 32bit from what I can tell. I was able to install all of my games and most of the programs that I used to have just fine. If you are willing to spend some time searching for drivers, get it. Worth the money.

Cons: iTunes and McAfee dont work. Probably won't until Vista comes out.

Other Thoughts: Ehhhh probably wouldn't have bought it again. I would wait for Vista.

Rating + 2 Nothing but problems

Pros: 64-bit computing. Microsoft can't even figure out 32-bit computing much less 64-bit. You don't really notice a difference between 32 and 64-bits. I use it for video/DVD authoring with Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 which is not written for 64-bits.

Cons: Very buggy. Crashes all the time. Athlon 64 4400+ Socket 939 on ASUS A8N-CM. It is supposed to run 32-bit applications but most of the time they crash. Most programs are not written for 2 processors or 64-bits.

Other Thoughts: If you want to induce a migraine then get WinXP Pro x64, otherwise stick with the regular Pro version. Not worth it because most programs are not written for 64-bits.

Pros: This operating system is a great upgrade from 32-bit Windows. I runs my games twice as fast and i have had no Driver problems at all. If you do head over to PlanetAmd64.

Cons: some 32-bit application did not work because they had a 32-bit lock for xp 32-bit, but there are usually was around them. Some older games did not work like 16-bit programs.

Other Thoughts: have it on a new hp computer i bought, top of the line at hp at least. And then one is just bought AMD 64 3800+ Am2, 4GB DDR2-800, Dual evga 7900 GT KO overclocked 256mb, Asus deluxe board, 2x 160gb Raid 0

Rating + 5 Better than xp32.

Pros: Works flawlessly for me. Better than the old xp. No more random files missing, or always some stupid reason to reload xp. I have no problems finding 64bit drivers. The only thing that didn't work was my 32bit norton, but I scrapped that junk in favor of free Avast Antivirus. Only 1 install, never crashed, not 1 problem in 5 months. Runs smooth.

Cons: It's not free.

Other Thoughts: This is the cheapest place I've seen it, almost 2x the price other places, more like 3x in retail stores.

Pros: Faster, uses 64-bit.

Cons: Claims to run both 32 and 64 bit applications but some 32 bit applications do not work. Graphics lag.

Other Thoughts: Everything great except for graphics lag and some 32 bit application problems. After all this time they really should have come up with a fix on these issues.

Rating + 1 Wait till Vista

Pros: Faster and it usses 64 bit

Cons: No driver support, not much beta drivers, no attempts for those to be made given the upcoming release of vindows Vista.

Problems I encountered: Bluetooth, printers (especally HP printers) linksys wireless cards, major software issues, NO DIRECT X 9.0 ( a major problem) cameras (specifically logiteck)

Other Thoughts: Just wait for the new OS to be released, this one was a joke, it has little support.

The new one should be out in a few months, just wait out the storm instead of getting lost at sea

Pros: Have had to problems with its operations.

Cons: Very little driver support, especially for printers. HP and Canon don't appear to be releasing drivers for XP 64 because they are waiting for Vista to be released. And for most hardware you may or may not have a hard time finding the drivers for 64 bit if you find any at all.

Rating + 4 thourough and ACCURATE review

Pros: more reliable then windows x32 bit, for dual core processors you dont need to install the dual core windows hotfix, many many x64 bit drivers for nearly all componenets

Cons: few reliable firewalls, or antivirus x64 sofware, no hewlettpackard x64 bit drivers yet for my printer

Other Thoughts: listen there are A LOT of x64 bit drivers for windows xp pro, and when i say this i mean every single application except a few that i use either work or have x64 bit versions for this operating system, daemeon tools, tiny firewall x64,ati, nvidia, all games work, creative soundcard drivers including the new x-fi soundcard i have, motherboard drivers and utilies (asus) 64-bit bios updates, the ONLY issues i have is with itunes the most recent version of quicktime and its only the MOST recent updated versions that dont work but that doesnt bother me much, also there is no 64 bit stable zonealarm firewall yet, there IS a BETA version of it though, they have only a handful of firewall and intivirus software but spybot s&d works fine, because of the wow 32 bit emulation, but windows starts faster and 64 bits = nearly no viruses, what virus writer is going to write something or 64 bits... when bout .0001% of computers are 64 bit. Its very stable as stable as windows can be....

Rating + 1 Microsoftt drops the ball...AGAIN!

Pros: NONE

Cons: Works for awhile, then crashes. The windows on windows system is to blame. There are very few applications availible in x64 so if you are forced to run a lot of x32 apps the WOW crashes and the system goes into eternal reboot.

Other Thoughts: No Doubt Microsoft Droped the Ball and this should be avoided. Until all applications, drivers and utilities are 100% x64, and MS rereleses x64 without WOW this bugger sucks. Dont waste your time or money.

Pros: A growing number of programs now support 64 bit processing. The only problem I encountered was trying to install a wireless adapter - nobody I could find makes on. I run this on an AMD 3800. No problem with drivers for my Epson 7700 wide format printer. Photoshop CS2 is blazing fast. This thing gobbles humongous photo files and never hiccups. It has never crashed. Welcome to the world of 64bit computing.

Cons: Only the wireless adaptor problem. It was easy to network around the problem with a smart switch.

Pros: Takes advantage of your 64 bir CPU, it was easy to install, no problems with ASUS A*N-SLI mobo, or logitech software, or video card software.

Cons: There is no wireless card that owrks with it, the drivers are not out yet. If you have a wireless home and trully hate ethernet cables do not buy it yet. I love Linksys, but they suck.

Other Thoughts: Stick with XP home or pre x32 for now, besides, Windows Vista is almost out (in a few months).

Pros: This was my first 64 bit OS. I had just gotten a new Dual Core Pentium and decided to go for the gusto. I had heard all sorts of warnings about the lack of availability of 64 bit drivers but posh... no issues at all. Out of the case, into the drive, up on the screen - and all my old apps run dandy. If you have a 64 bit proc, go 64 bit OS drivers are NOT an issue if you buy from a name brand.

Cons: None that I can really think of.

Rating + 4 Works for me!

Pros: Stable at running existing X32 programs (in fact, in many there's a slight speed improvement). Regular updates from Microsoft that install without a hitch.

Cons: Not Microsoft's fault, but very few X64 programs exist at this time to give the user a sense of this operating system's full power. Some driver support is non-existant, expecially for older components.

Other Thoughts: You really want to check every little aspect of your hardware before ordering this. MAKE SURE there's X64 drivers for everything, and burn them to a disk BEFORE you wipe your hard drive and install this version. Now that I think about it, you'd do even better to download the trial from Microsoft and give it a spin before shelling out dough. That's what I did, and I haven't been sorry; it's a good, stable, operating system! Your X64 system will be ready for what lies ahead.

Rating + 5 Great way to take advantage of 64 bit processors

Pros: Runs great and smooth. Was able to get 64-bit drivers for ALL of my hardware, including RAID card, ASUS A8N32-SLI motherboard, GeForce 7900GTX, Sound Blaster X-Fi, HP Printer, HP All-in-one, Ethernet cards, etc etc. Some games are built for this too, such as FarCry (with 64 bit patch) and HalfLife 2. If you want to run Norton Antivirus, you'll need to corporate edition. Need to call up Symantec to buy only 1 license.

Cons: People are complaining that this OS sucks, but it's not the OS, it's the software they're trying to run on it. Don't complain about the OS, complain about your software. Only one game of mine won't work, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and that's because of the StarForce copy protection.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you can find 64-bit drivers for all your hardware before you get this. I have had no problems with this OS and love it. I dual boot with this and XP Pro 32-bit and find myself using the x64 version 95% of the time. Only use the 32 bit version for Cisco VPN client, and to connect my phone to my computer via USB. Vendors are beginning to release more and more 64-bit drivers, so compatibility isn't become a big issue anymore.

Rating + 5 Runs irie

Pros: Stable and responsive. Runs many 32 bit apps just fine, those that don't will with some patience and tweeking.

Cons: Some companies are dragging on 64bit support, putting their energy into Vista. Xp 64 and Vista are based on the Server 2003 SP1 code so meh.

Other Thoughts: Do research on your hardware in advance on manufacurers sites x64 websites like extended64 and planetamd64. Download the trial at MS website and see if it works for you before shelling out cash. In my opinion XP 64 is like Win NT back in the Win 9x days, powerfull, buy not for everyone due to some compatability issues. Vista will supposedly be the new XP to bring server code to home users. but if you're adventurous or crave the latest go for it, just plan in advance. If you're comfy where you are wait till vista. I've personally had no problems and will be sticking with 64.

Rating + 4 It works

Pros: Take advantage of 64 bit programs. Runs a host of 32 bit programs just fine. I had drivers for my Video card (FX5500) and the Ahead software seems to burn CDs & DVDs just fine. Photoshop 9 zips along much nicer.

Cons: YOU never really know what will work and what won't. Getting Anti-virus can be a bit of a pain because Z** L***, N***** and M****** don't have consumer Antivirus that will work in 64 bit.(There are comercial/business versions for $$$, in some cases.)
Also you need to make sure when you get downloads from Microsoft it is for XP-64bit. Just because it says it's for XP-Pro doesn't mean XP-Pro X64.

Other Thoughts: It's strange but most companies are still not very forthcoming with information whether their software or hardware will work in 64 bit.Sometimes you have to really dig to find any answers. You can bet that if it doesn't say "XP-Pro X64" in the supported systems list, it isn't supported (most of the time). It's all a matter of how much of chance you want to take.
You can download a trial version at Microsoft that is good for 120 days. THAT WOULD BE A GOOD THING TO DO.

Pros: Loaded easy and stable for the last week, at least as good as 32 bit XP. You just have to be aware of the limitations of a 64 bit OS, and you need hardware with 64 bit drive support. I picked a new MB and video card partly because I could get 64 bit drivers for them. Look at the manufacturers site for 64 bit SW downloads before you make a purchase.

Cons: Rule No. 1: XP64 won’t run any 16 bit code. All your older apps and most of your newer ones that are updates of old SW still have 16 bit legacy code and won’t work. This includes most games.

Other Thoughts: Works: Office 2003, Firefox, Mozilla, Thunderbird, pdf995, Irfanview, ClamWin AV, Spybot.

Doesn’t work: Diskkeeper Pro, Acrobat 7 loads and works but you can’t print to a pdf, Zone Alarm - I’m using the latest ZA Suite Beta, but it’s real buggy. MSI Core Center reports my 12 volt rail as 11 volts. I tried 3 power supplies, all the same result.

Haven't tried Roxio or Nero yet.

MSI K8N Neo3, Athlon XP64-3000, MSI NX6600LE Video card.

Rating + 1 Dissapointing

Pros: I like the how the color of my video cards is enhanced.

Cons: Not even have of my games work/install on this piece of junk, and none of my hardware would install from thier cd drivers nor did windows pick up the drivers. Had to have my roomate download the driver for my motherboard before internet access was available. Several programs when installing crashed this OS and negated my interet access and disabled the toolbar. (no not hacked software). Had to format 3 times and is now just installed with the basics.

Other Thoughts: Since Newegg will not RMA this (which I know about piracy, but this is a OS which requires registry), does anyone know if Microsoft will return this for money back and to delete the registry so someone else can use it (I pitty the fool who does) ? Been a Newegg buyer for years and have been very happy. I really hate the fact that I just wasted $xxx on this junk and don't have $xxx to actually waste. Bought this because I am using a AMD XP64 and thought it would be a improvement. Probably gonna get Vista, but gonna go back to WinXP soon.

Rating + 5 GREAT FOR NEW SYSTEMS

Pros: Excellent utilization of the full 64bit capabilities of the AMD X2 dual core CPU's. Runs blazingly fast with the 64bit and 32bit programs as compared to XP Pro SP2. Recognises all of my hard drive space and all 4GB of my ram for better utilisation of installed components. No driver issues with newer components.

Cons: NOT, I repeat NOT for older systems. There are some driver support issues for older components etc. so expect to wait for new drivers to be distributed or upgrade your components to those that have 64bit driver support.

Other Thoughts: System:ASUS A8n-SLI nForce4, AMD 64 X2 4800 (OC to 2.6), 4GB Corsair XMS DDR 400 RAM, 2x ASUS EN7900GTX 512 PCI-E video cards, 2x WD Caviar 500GB HDD SATA 3.0Gb/s, Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Fatality, FSP FX600-GLN 600W PS, all stuffed into a Raidmax RX-9 Mid ATX tower.

Pros: Great platform, much more stable then 32 bit. Raised my scorces for the 3dbenchmark too!

Cons: Not many 64 bit apps yet! Emphasize yet! When vista comes out 64 bit apps should come around. Can be a pain sometimes to find drivers.

Other Thoughts: I'd wait till vista before switching to a 64 bit operating system.

Cons: Very few 64Bit apps out there right now, but most of my standard 32 bit apps (Office, Adobe and my games) run just fine w/WOW.

Rating + 4 A wild beast needing tamed!

Pros: Extremely fast interface, she will rip into anything you throw at it. Always ravenous hunger for more data that 32 bit or 64 bit apps may conjure. Farely stable in the GUI windows part. It takes alot to slow this thing down. I have gotten away with running World of Warcraft and EVE online simultaneously with no noticable lag or stuttering and alt tabbing over in the blink of an eyewith a 3.0 intel and 2 Gigs of RAM. They are definitely correct when they say it unlocks 64 bit potential. I had a 3.0 478 Intel P4 with HT not much different other than RAM speed and cache and it would never have managed to play 2 MMPORG's at the same time with just 32 bit pro. Not to mention browse the web with both games running in the background. It's made for Humans that want thier computers to wait on them. Not the Human waiting on the computer.

Cons: This is the part of this animal that needs taming. A little rambunctious and unforgiving sometimes with 32 bit app compatability. And rarely sometimes no response or success at all in installation or operation. 64 bit drivers need to be better developed for this O/S but I think that may be Microsoft's intention to create a "test bed/staging platform" for hardware and software vendors to preperation for Vista. What ever you do don't mess with the registry in X64 and definitely don't disable the DCOM service. Somethings you just don't mess with, I learned this the hard way. Support for some issues may be hard to come by. Only use this product if you have an intermediate or above understanding of Operating systems, hardware, and software. Some 64 bit apps may call for 32bit API's or ActiveX controlls that have not been written for 64 bit programs yet. IE 64 bit is a prime example when trying to do Macromedia Flash or other media players. Do note that a 32 bit version of IE is included.

Other Thoughts: To break things down into component ratings is as follows:

Speed (No joke, it will tear those little Bytes to bits!)
*****
Driver support
** (ouch)
Overal stability
****
32 bit application stability
***
32 bit compatability
***
64 bit compatability
****
Appearance
Nothing new there... But familiar.

Good money saver, if you don't mind some degree of time investment.

Update you drivers regularly and check manufacturers sites at least monthly for driver updates.

Keep in mind if you are building a 64 bit system the less mainstream or older your hardware is the less likely you are to find 64 bit drivers for it. This is a bleading edge O/S dont let it cut you later by not checking compatability or avalability of manufacturers drivers.

It would be a wise idea to make a checklist of the hardware/software you want and check off each item that you have found to be known good compatable or X64 drivers for. Then you will know if this O/S will meet your needs.

Rating + 2 Back Support?

Pros: 64-bit...nothing else really

Cons: No back support that works well for 32bit apps and drivers. Had issues with some of my sata expansion cards, needed for video editing, expected a major speed increase, not really anything special that the same price put into a new processor (plus a few bucks) wouldn't fix.

Other Thoughts: There are many Linux 64 Distros that, because of 32bit support, actually make life easier and faster. This is re-diculus that they'd want you to par for the upgrade that is still in beta.

Rating + 2 Don't bother

Pros: 64 bit. Good for webservers and some very specialised applications (like video editing applications, if they were designed specifically for 64 bit windows). Install is less oriented to consumers than regular XP pro.

Cons: Terrible driver support. Many older applications refuse to install because they think it isn't windows XP. Even things like certain browser plug-ins, which have no right to care what bitness you are using. Some dumber applications which do install (especially games) tend to use twice as much ram as they would under 32-bit windows for reasons I can't comprehend.

Other Thoughts: Unless you plan on using this for a webserver (in which case you'd probably be better off with 2k3), I'd stick to 32-bit windows. I removed it from my Athlon64 system and 'downgraded' to regular XP pro (thankfully both were on site licence).

Rating + 3 Close but no cigar...

Pros: x64 offers a great deal of headroom in terms of memory and storage, making it technically ideal for a workstation OS. I've insatlled Windows over 20 times on fully partiitoned multiboot configurations; I always download and insatll latest bios/drivers. I've been using these successful installs on my PC workstations - to make my living - for eight years; here's what I found w/ XPx64.

Cons: Wacom Intuos 2 drivers; didn't work, unstable; Windows Logo Certification warnings. Creative soundblaster live! drivers did not work, unstable; Windows Logo Certification warnings. Diskeeper Server Enterprise and Standard; ran but would not defrag. CCleaner ran but could not find all x86 apps. Winamp ran but unstable. Other minor assorted funkiness.

Other Thoughts: For sure this OS works for some, great. But it's ability to run has nothing to do with "homework" or skill at OS installations; it's merely a crapshoot. As with all the other accurate reviews I advise a full smoke test w/ demo/trial version. Success w/ this OS is based on specific needs/configuration.

Pros: Very fast with a dual core processor. Faster than XP Professional.

Cons: A certain (H) printer (P) company isn't writing 64 bit drivers for many of it's printers. This isn't really a bad product, and not Bill's fault, but most people I know are using one of these unsupported printers.

Pros: It works great and it's good for those with a duel core CPU. It will also sllow you to have over to 2G's of RAM as oppossed to only 2.7G's which is all the regular 32bit version of XP allowes.

Cons: You have to update a few drivers, might not be fun for the newbies.

Other Thoughts: Windows Vista is almost here and it'll have a 64bit version, why not just wait? It'll be worth it. For those building a computer, AMD and Intel are working on new CPU's, Conroe and Socket 940, so you might as well just wait a little bit for Vista.

Rating + 2 The key word is "Professional"

Pros: The Operating System works extremely well for all professional needs, however I consider the most necessary professional needs (i.e. Word and other Microsoft Office tools) to work at the same results on regular Windows XP or Win XP Pro OS's.

Cons: "If you have a 64-bit processor, why not get a 64 bit Operating System?" I strongly urge against this hype, considering the average computer builder isn't considering a computer to function purely for Professional needs, and if they are, then they aren't getting their money's worth, especially with this OS. Gamers beware, Norton Antivirus and Webroot Spysweeper, two highly accomplished Antivirus names suffer severe stability problems with this OS, it definately is not a system intended for Gaming or practical use.

Other Thoughts: This operating system would be much more practical for the average user (in my opinion) if it had the capability of handling 32-bit oriented drivers, software, and accessories as well as the 64-bit setup. Hopefully there will be updates and service packs that really make this OS desirable in the near future.

Rating + 4 Nice OS, Got to know what you're doing

Pros: Taking advantage of those 64 bits, loads apps much quicker, will be much better once 64 bit applications get mainstreamed. Decent performance boost with everything, even with 32 bit apps.

Cons: Drivers are definitely flakey. Might have to hunt around for the correct drivers. Some type of driver trouble is inevitable (though mostly little, easily correctable problems). Not for the casual computer user, advanced computer knowledge is a must.

Other Thoughts: If you're curious about 64 bit Windows, Download the 120 day free trial from Microsoft first. Don't expect everything to install and work properly the first time around. Driver support is MUCH better now than it was a few months ago. All in all though it is nice to finally be able to take full advantage of my 64 bits.

Pros: For any of you looking at computing with the future in mind this OS is a must. I'm running trial version but will shortly purchase full OEM version. This is where the industry is heading and if your machine can handle it, grab the OS.

Cons: A few minor driver issues, but through knowledge and some technical support, OS is up and running smooth as silk. Not for a novice user because they would not have patience nor know how to work around the minor issues.

Rating + 5 A Nice OS

Pros: Support for 64 bit apps and most 32 bit apps as well, with little to no performance hit. Even FFXI, an older game, runs fine through the transparent WOW layer. Somewhat snappier than XP 32 bit due to its use of the Server 2003 codebase and its ability to give each app 4 GB of virtual address space. In my experience, drivers that have been ported over work just as well if not better than their 32 bit counterparts.

Cons: Drivers for older or more obscure hardware can be difficult/impossible to find. Programs which use pseudo drivers that have not been ported to x64, such as many firewalls and antivirus apps, will not run.

Other Thoughts: Although not free of support problems, XP x64 works quite well for many systems. Microsoft provides a free time-limited trial to allow compatibility testing; I used this to insure my system would run what I needed and would recommend everyone considering x64 do the same. Avast provides a nice free antivirus solution that works well with this OS.

Pros: I like actually using the 64 bit capabilities of my cpu. Runs all my apps and games without a problem.

Cons: Peripheral driver support is hit or miss. As far as I know there are no drivers for external usb wireless cards -- for any brand.

Other Thoughts: I solved my wireless solution by routing it through my laptop Mac (in preferences, go to Sharing, Internet, Share your AirPort connection through the Ethernet port).

Cons: Depending on what your running, just as often slower as faster. Hardware compatibility a crp shoot. Neither IE nor Firefox have decent 64-bit support on Win64. Dual Program File directories mildly annoying.

Rating + 3 Fast, but picky on hardware support

Pros: Fast. Very fast. My system goes from power on to logged in, in under 15 seconds.

Most 32 bit apps (even games) run fine with their WOW32 layer. Half-life 2 performs amazingly well in x64 mode.

That aside, not much different from 32 bit Windows XP.

Cons: * Driver support *

Yes, people can whine about "don't rate the drivers, rate the os" and such, but MS could've provided a 32 bit driver compatability layer that ran in user-space. This would've made my life a ton easier, since my MP3 player, external USB sound card, USB scanner, and color laser printer are now all unsupported in this OS, making them useless.

Other Thoughts: A Note to PC audio users: pretty much all firewire cards are unsupported (presonus doesn't know when they'll have support), and non-class compliant USB hardware (eg: anything with more than 2 channels, or has any control-panel software) is not likely to work. Check with your vendor FIRST.

Pros: I used X64 for the six month trial and it runs sooo much better than XP Pro(reg) I had to buy it, I tried to wait for Vista and go back to XP Pro but it lags compared X64. You will notice a impovement with performance, esp. if you use it with the dual cores. But don't take my word for it, try the six month trial, do the research, its not for everyone, but I won't go back.

Cons: The first month or so I was getting frustrated because of the support and driver situation, I couldn't even find a printer, but I stuck with it and researched as much as I could and now I don't really have and problems with finding drivers or problems with hardware. It runs fast and stable (well more than reg XP Pro) and everything works.

No problems with LAN, DVD, NVidia drivers, ect all supported. An old PDA (Palm III) was problematic but it was that way before with XP so nothing I can blame x64 for. Cons: No cons for the OS itself. People tend to complain about the lack of drivers . . . SEARCH WITH PATIENCE! I indeed did go through about four drivers before finding something compatible for my Asus K8N-E Deluxe, but after some trial-and-error all was well. The video card driver was a breeze.

One thing about the 64-bit explorer though - it tends to crash the computer at times when visiting certain sites due to a lack of compatiblity. For the time being, I would stick with the 32-bit explorer. I don't really notice a performance difference between the two anyways.

Other Thoughts: If you know what you're doing and have a 64-bit system, GO FOR IT! It was so worth it, I've abandoned 32-bit XP altogether since installing x64.

Also, if you're looking for Anti-virus for x64 - go with Avast. I supports 64-bit and is amazing.

Rating + 4 Wait for Windows Vista

Pros: 64 bit, fast, reliable, driver support is better now for CURRENT hardware.

Cons: Wireless cards and x64 drivers? Good luck...Antivirus support is almost non-existant. Forget Norton and Trend Micro. I'm using NOD32. Also if you are a Roxio fan forget it. Nero 6.x runs though.

Other Thoughts: Manu's view this OS as an intermediate transition to Windows Vista, and don't want to bother writing drivers for this knowing they will have to do it again real soon for Vista. Unless you are in a hurry to run 64 bit, use XP Pro until Vista is released..manu's will have much better driver support for Vista.

Pros: very fast and stable os. I did alot of research before I put this in my system. I got all the drivers for my system first and integrated them into the os(using nLite) and the install was sweet!!! Multi media and games are so screamin". No spyware yet. Got a good spyware remover and anti virus to work(NOD32). Twice as fast as win Pro. Oh ya!!!!!

Cons: Set up was trying until I integrated all the right drivers. Comes with sp2.......ahhhh......What a drag!!!I hate all that sp2 stuff.

Other Thoughts: Buy it now from Newegg and do it now!!!

Pros: Had zero problems and i use xp64 bit for every day use.All games run fine Sims2,quake4,Fear.BF2,unrealtournament 2004 call of duty 2,yes i am a heavy gamer and i haven't found a game that gave me problems. There is 2 directories under C:/program files for xp64 bit one for 32bit apps and one for 64bit apps.as for spyware tools adware personal se and spybot search and destroy have 64bit support. The best av to use is avast home edition which is free and has 64bit support.I run a wireless lan wmp54g version 2 which the drivers for that were on the xp64bit disk. The logitech g15 gaming keyboard has drivers to one the logiect website.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: If you want this get it! plenty of drivers.

Rating + 4 I'd use exclusively if it weren't for the lack of drivers.

Pros: The OS is very stable. It runs faster than 32-bit XP. Apps that take advantage of the 64-bit processing leave their 32-bit counterparts in the dust. Plenty of drivers available from major OEMs like Creative, ATI, Nvidia, Intel and AMD. I have had no troubles with any of my 32-bit apps.

Cons: Few, if any, of the smaller OEMs support this OS. Microsoft screwed-up big time with drivers since the API is different for each version of Windows: 32-bit XP, 64-bit XP and Vista!! Since Vista is the next big release, OEMs are working on drivers for that and not for 64-bit XP.

Other Thoughts: NOD32, one of the the best anti-virus programs available today, has a version for 64-bit Windows XP.

Rating + 4 Works Just Fine

Pros: 64-bit support, Post-9x stability, security of XP's later products

Cons: Nothing that doesn't exist in any other Windows version

Other Thoughts: Ignore the whiners. Unless you're trying to hook up a Flooglemeister 3000 manufactured and programmed by some fly-by-night computer outfit, you won't have any problems. Driver support is just fine for all common hardware, and if you get 64-bit apps that are programmed appropriately it will run them quicker than the 32-bit versions.

Basically, what it comes down to is that if you don't anything about computing, don't hop onto the bleeding edge of technology. If you're no confident that you know enough about the system to overcome minor problems (which I have yet to encounter), then wait until the people who know how to overcome them do and the fixes become common knowledge.

Rating + 5 Great for people who know how to use it

Pros: Let's get it straight people... You're rating Windows X64, NOT THE DRIVERS (which by the way, AREN'T made by MS)... As an OS, X64 paired with a 64-bit (I'm using a 3000+) is amazingly good: It's fast, takes up less ram, and supports virtually all 32-bit applications out there. Whether you do music production, video editing/encoding, or just gaming/office, X64 is a pretty reliable OS.

Cons: None whatsoever. Yes, drivers are (were) hard to find, but still, it's not like MS is responsible for making drivers for OTHER COMPANIES' products.

Other Thoughts: I assume that most people who would want to switch to this OS would do it because they actually have a NEED for it... not for bragging rights. If you don't have the technical knowledge to troubleshoot things on your own, which is not hard since everyone is armed with a brain and Google, then DON'T USE THIS.

Rating + 4 A halfway decent offering from Microsoft

Pros: * Incredible performance on native 64-bit applications, and noticeable improvements in emulated 32-bit applications.
* Improved handling of RAM (Especially 2Gb+).
* The 32-bit emulator invokes itself automatically and transparently.

Cons: * Microsoft...a target for hackers and crackers. It seems that new security flaws are uncovered as soon as the previous one is patched.
* Older/lower-end hardware may not have compatible drivers.
* 16-bit installers will not run.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, I've only run into one snag with my drivers. I recently moved my computer to another room away from the router and decided on a wireless solution to get a network connection. The only NIC I had laying around was an older D-Link model, that is now unsupported by the manufacturer. Fortunately, after a bit of research, I found a driver that will work from Atheros (The company that manufactures the chips on almost every wireless NIC).

All in all, a very good OS.

Rating + 4 There is an antivirus program available

Pros: Runs fast on my Athlon 64 system. Very stable

Cons: Very few drivers available at this time.

Other Thoughts: Some comments have been made to the effect that there are no antivirus programs available for this os. I'm writing this review just to let folks know that NOD32 Antivirus has a 64 bit program. I've been running it on my system with no problems. I like having a 64 bit os to work with my Athlon 64 4000+ processor, but will switch to Vista when it comes out. Like most others, I want to run more apps and be able to add peripherals from time to time.

Pros: Great OS...stable and fast. I haven't had any system crash.

Cons: Lack driver for some hardware like printers. Not many printer companies have written x64 driver. I need to print so I can't do without a printer. I am back to regular WinXP for now. Can't blame Microsoft for this.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg rocks! :)

Rating + 3 ok but still has lots of flaws

Pros: well i would say the best pro is that it works well with 64 bit cpu's and has drivers for most of your name brad hardware

Cons: still in its early days needs lots of software companys to actualy make programs for it once it has actualy worked its way up with the programs it will be a great os for the people that know how to use it

Other Thoughts: as for the other people that think that virus software is not needed on this os think agian it DOES STILL HAVE 32 BIT CODEING IN IT AND CAN STILL BE INFECTED BY A VIRUS there is only one antivirus that will work on this os and it is called avast but i wont use it cause to me it is not trustworthy like mcafee and norton

Pros: Personally I do not know what a few of these others are talking about. i have had the x64 since it's beta days, and i think that it is great. I have never had a problen for any driver in my system, EXCEPT my linksys wireless adapter. Linksys sucks, so there you have it. NEVER crashes, Video editing/encoding super fast!

Cons: At it's early stages, yes, DRIVERS, but since last Sept. not many, only linksys.

Other Thoughts: Order the Demo from microsoft first to see if you like it!

Rating + 1 Not for peripherals

Pros: Not many, it actually runs 64-bit but chips in 64-bit mode, but that's about it

Cons: If you want to add anything to your computer, even a sound card, then this is most likely not the OS for you. There is very little support for lots of hardware out there.

Any applications you get for this will most likely be 32-bit anyway, and have to run on top of Microsoft's emulator.

Just buy the 32-bit operating system and be done with it.

Rating + 4 Great OS, but not for everybody!

Pros: This is a great operating system. Loads very quickly and is very stable.

Contrary to many other reviews, antivirus software is available and has been since before I installed this in December 2005.

Those who claim there is no antivirus software obviously did not bother looking. A simple Google search for "64bit antivirus" will provide you with a program that is both FREE and will run on Windows XP Pro x64 editition. I have been using the program since I installed this OS in December and have had no problems.

Cons: The only con with this OS is the lack of driver support. However that is changing fairly rapidly since Vista (due to be released this year) is also a 64-bit OS which is based upon both Wondows 2003 server (another 64 bit OS) and this OS.

As far as software, this OS will still run all of the existing 32-bit applications you are used to using. New applications that support 64-bit computing are still very few. But the number is increasing daily. The real apps that will benefit in upgrading to 64-bit processing, and/or dual core, are the processor intensive apps like games, video and photo editing, music composition/editing, etc.

No compatible plug ins for the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer that is included in this release. However if you are using sites that do not use macromedia or flash, the 64-bit version of IE is much quicker.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes it is painful to be on the bleeding edge of technology. HAving a 64-bit OS at this point in time is very similar to owning an HD Television. There are no HD DVDs on the market and only a handfull of HD TV stations. When you make the jump to a new technology, it will take time for the rest to catch up and generate a market that will be profitible to spend the bucks on R&D to develop software/hardware that will function with the new tech.

Pros: Everything. Using 64 bit applications with this OS is amazing, things just simply blaze...and Far Cry has never looked so good.

Cons: ALOT of devices lack drivers for x64. 99% of PCI devices and some sound cards wont work.

Other Thoughts: to everyone that keeps complaining about Antivirus software not working on this OS......are you sure you even know what your talking about? X64 is the same principle as Linux. There is no antivirus software that will work on it, true, but there are also NO major viruses out there for it. Your everyday 32 bit written virus that will affect all other versions of windows wont do jack to X64. So stop complaining and start doing research before buying an OS you don't know how to use.

Pros: great for sadists

Cons: endless problems with extremely limited resources for troubleshooting. virtually no apps, and due to extremely low adoption of this system, don't expect to see many more. companies that were developing seem to have decided to develop for vista instead.

Other Thoughts: in theory, it is a great os, but the reality is that any problem you encounter will have virtually no resources to help you troubleshoot. if the tech community had embraced it, i would recommend it completely. they did'nt, they won't, so i can't. if you don't believe me, try researching some hypothetical problems you might expect any version of windows to encounter.

Pros: On my 64-bit chip it does run faster than on XP Pro....

Cons: Well first off have fun finding a anti-virus for a 64 bit OS, next you better have a new printer, scanner and sound card that is brand name. Wil not work with a Hp 610 printer, Cannon Nu1000 scanner and a New Turtle Beach Riveria sound card..becareful

Other Thoughts: Wait a couple years until they fix the driver problems for the hardware drivers. You can get the trial-version 180 day from microsoft.com,either download it or order the cd....try before you buy

Rating + 1 Obviously Still a beta product

Pros: Microsoft finally added a feedback agent. Hopefully everyone buying this will use that part to let them know how poorly it 'Operates'. It does seem to be pretty crash resistent.. but it is still too early for me to report on that. It is fast. However an operating system is supposed to operate programs.

Cons: It's claim to run 32bit apps in native mode on dual processor systems is a LONG stretch. I found myself googling to get certain applications running, using a file, imagecfg.exe (to set affinity on certain apps) from way back in the NT 4.0 days proved to be my salvation. Pretty scarey. Even things like copy and paste get lost. The handling of dual processing has big flaws and I'm guessing is the cause of most of the problems.

Other Thoughts: Worst MS OS's, ME, Bob and at the bottom, XP 64. I may have passed it too big of a compliment by calling it beta... maybe alpha would be more appropriate. Microsoft should make good to all of us early 'testers' and upgrade us to Vista, which I hope is more ready for the real world. Otherwise, they should advertise the OS as being for certified 64bit (built for XP 64) applications only.

Rating + 4 Use trial version first!

Pros: Heh, it's Windows XP "Professional", what Pro can there actually be besides in the name?!? Well it's supposedly more stable, but that's still to be seen...

Cons: Lack of 64-Bit software available yet, Vista is stealing XP x64's thunder! Don't wait for Vista though if you're wanting to move to x64, get this instead! Vista will be nothing more than an over glorified resource hog compared to this! Check PlanetAMD64 before purchasing/upgrading to x64 and make sure you're comfortable with the problem associated with this new technology that everyone's moving to but still not yet supported. I don't remember 32-bit having such problems with support when it was first introduced!

Other Thoughts: Even though it may take until Vista is released to get any decent support for this operating system, don't wait and waste you're money on Vista when it comes out, get this version now and run it dual-boot so you can keep up with the updates, until this version can totally replace your x32 version totally.
