SanMax PMD-96I Black Mobile Hard Drive Rack

Pros: The exact tray they use at my school and the bulk price we got from New Egg was wonderful, a full ten bucks less than in the local store. We bought enough for the entire class. Built in fan keeps the drive very cool.

Cons: Not alot of use for it after my class is over, but we'll come up with something.

Cons: Out of the three drive bays I've bought, only one works decently. The other two give drive read errors; have to reboot three times to get drive to work normally. Moving drives and bays around to troubleshoot, I found that the problem is with the drive enclosure half of the by. Now I am testing electrical integrity of cabling.

Other Thoughts: I wish someone had done this testing as part of the QA process before the device was shipped out to me.

Comments: Altho this is a plastic tray system, I was surprised at how sloid the product is. The cartridge fits tightly enough that you can be assured it will not pop out. The drive is pretty secure in the tray, with almost no room for rattling around during transport, and screws available for even more of a secure attachment.

Comments: My purpose in purchasing this was to load Linux on a separate hard drive completely separated from my Windows drive.
I also purchased an additional tray for my Windows drive.
Installation was relatively painless.
It works with both the 160 and 300 GB hard drives that I own.
My only suggestion to SanMax would be to rework the locking mechanism. The lock is more of a reminder than an actualy removal prevention device. I tugged a bit on the tray when it was "locked" and it slid out a bit from the housing.
Well worth the money. This is easier than double booting and probably safer for my data.
Any SOHO user looking for a good way to backup their data should make a few of these devices mandatory in their office.

Comments: I purchased six of these for my dad's office so that he could secure his hard drives at night becuase of security problems in a shared office. I use mine to scan drives from friends computers who are having problem. These racks work like a charm! They are easy to install, and hard drives can be swapped out of a tray in a blink! Great for security, convenience, backups, and exandability! Can't go wrong with this product--all six are working after four months flawlessly! Just be sure to order extra trays for all your drives. If you don't have enough IDE/ATA connectors just look at the Promise ATA 133 card! And as usual, all from the supplier that Rocks--NewEgg!
