Thermaltake presents a case with the power and upgradeability of a desktop and a laptop's transportability. The handle on this case isn't just for show! It will take the weight of your system without worry, thanks to the light but strong aluminum chassis. The VF1000SWA comes with a 5.25" and a 3.5" external drive bays, and two 3.5" internal drive bays. But what sets it apart is the 7" external drive bay for an optional integrated monitor that could be converted to a second 5.25" drive bay if you prefer.
The modular design makes system assembly an absolute dream. Both the external and internal drive bay cages are removable for easy installation. The motherboard tray slides out the back for simple installation of both the Micro ATX motherboard and the VGA card or more PCI cards.
Lastly, the top comes up for those little adjustments that are inevitable after the initial build. The entire case is made of lightweight aluminum to keep carrying the case from becoming a burden. So never worry again about how you'll get your system to the LAN party, worry about your friends wanting to take it from you.

Superb mATX case
- Pros: Simply put: this is the finest SFF case I have ever worked with and, as I have been building PC's since 1886, that is saying alot. Outstanding modular design, All Aluminum (lightweight and good heat dissipation) chassis and, IMHO great looks. The handle is extremely sturdy, inspiring great confidence when transporting.....Built this for my son, then bought the black one for myself. This one is much lighter than the black one (which is made of SECC steel, instead). Slide out tray for MB. Just a great design. Very quiet compared to my Q-Pack PC's. mATX means no proprietary MB's!
- Cons: The 3.5" drive cage blocks the air intake fan, on the front of the case. Some sharp edges. Price is still a tad high. .......Many thanks to all the people who recommended a modular Power Supply. .........If you plan on using both optical drive bays, the modular supply is almost a necessity; o/w there is little place to stuff all the extra wires and connectors. System specs: GA-945 MB, PentiumD 920, Tt Orb II w/Artic Silver 5, 8800GTS, Hiper 580W Blue Modular PS (highly recommended), WD 500GB HD, LiteOn IDE DVD-RW x2.
- Other Thoughts: Helpful hints: 1. If you can use the modular ps, do it. 2. Connect your 12v 4pin connector to the MB BEFORE installing the CPU HSF. 3. If you use a large HSF, install it after the MB tray is slid back into the case. 4. You must install the optical drives BEFORE the HD. 5. There are four screw holes for the optical drives, use the hole closest to the back of the case! 6. If you can avoid using the 3.5" HD bay, remove it for airflow. 7. Try to use round cables, if possible. You are going to love this case!
I love it!
- Pros: Easy to work on. Great heat dispensation. Sturdy carrying handle, quiet fans. The aluminum absorbs heat and transfers it away from internal components to the ambient environment quite nicely.
If your looking for an easily portable case that can withstand the knocks and bumps of travel and at the same time house a power plant, this is the case for you.
- Cons: optical drive bay cover blocks visibility of optical drive activity LED. However, the front is very slim-line and clean looking because of the bay covers.
A bit pricey I think also...
- Other Thoughts: I'm surprised at how well this thing keeps everything cool. The case is surprisingly sturdy when fully assembled. It's also very light for as sturdy as it is. Anyway, great case, it fulfilled my need for a gaming rig that was easily portable. intel e6600 9x360 on stock HSF, 2gig ballistics pc8000, geforce 8800, wd raptor x (it's a bit noisy but I love to see the head running across the platter through the clear side panel). gigabyte ga-g33m-ds2r mb, enermax 500w modular p/s.
temps: idle/load room temp at (78 F)
gpu: 63/70 cpu: 34/67 (stock HSF) hd: ~41-43 chipset: 45/48

if you can't take the heat...
- Pros: looks are 5 star. with some juggling and moveing the HD it can hold a 9800gtx or a 3870x2. built very solid, other small cases i've seem felt cheap and flimsy ( peiva) this is a much higher quality.
- Cons: HOT!!!!!! stock fans are just for looks i think. poor air flow. power supply is right above the CPU which greatly limits the size of your CPU cooler, if your willing to do some minor cutting than liquid cooling is an option.
- Other Thoughts: upgraded to a larger case for SLI but i'm keeping this case for a possible future lan party build when AMD comes out with lower wattage quad cores and the price of the 4870 comes down.
update to Excellent case review
- Pros: This is a great case but if your using components that generate a lot of heat I strongly recommend that you replace the orignal fans with high performance fans. I have been enjoying this case but I had an incident with it so I want to clarify.
- Cons: I experienced a lan port failure on the new motherboard I installed in this case. I suspect that heat build up had to do with that. The fans that come installed with the case are not effective at all. There's a spot for a 3rd 60mm fan in the rear where the video card goes. I bought one and installed it (made by thermaltake and very inexpensive) and this replacement fan is high performance. Spins at twice the speed as the orginal fans. I could feel the air blow against my hand. The fans that came installed in the rear of the case near the CPU are virtually ineffective at moving air.
- Other Thoughts: I replaced the other 2 rear 60mm fans with the high performance fans and I am also replacing the 90mm fan with a high performance fan. These should double the airflow through the case. Also I am installing a round IDE cable to help because the flat ribbon cable to the CDROM drive blocks a lot of airflow. Depending on how well the new fans cool the case I might still mount fans to the side panels.
Excellent case
- Pros: This is a very cool looking case with a beautiful exterior. It's not very heavy and it has an awesome handle on it. The handle justifies the price! It is very well designed to make installation in a small space easy. I like the slide out motherboard tray, the detachable P/S and optical drive cages. The power supply however needs more support on the end that isn't bolted to the case.
- Cons: I'm do not think the case is designed for the best air cooling possible. The fans are small(little shrimpy fans in the back). There's plenty of vents but I think you need bigger fans and less holes in the case. This could have been easily designed to have fans in the side panels instead of just vents. I'm going to look into installing an extra fan or two.
- Other Thoughts: I'm running an AMD 6400+ 3.2Ghz dual core in this case. It gets hot. The CPU is running in the 42-52 degree celsius range without much of a load. A high power video card is going to generate a lot more heat. I think more fans are going to be needed. I removed the small hard drive cage from the bottom of the case and mounted the drive vertically in the optical drive cage. The drive cage would have completely blocked any airflow from the front fan (other people have said this as well). That fan is not exactly packing a hurricane either. The drive will probably run warmer there but that was the choice I made. The case is not quiet. The small fans drone and with all the vents any noise is going to escape. But you buy this case for portability and not for noise abatement.
