Works but critical problem
- Pros: Has many features and browser interface. Everything is great except my one problem and it is a very critical problem for me (see below)
- Cons: The driver has problems. If you use this device in driver mode it will blue screen. The company gives instructions for solving this but it doesn't work. They tell you that verifying the driver will solve this problem but it doesn't. I tried this on many different computers with WindowsXP sp2 and sp3 and they all Blue screened or just shut off. I even tried vista and it doesn't blue screen... it just won't communicate.
- Other Thoughts: This thing works fine if you don't use it in driver mode but I really need to use it in driver mode. I am going to contact the company and try a few more things. I believe I can get this working I just need to get the driver to work. I am going to try Windows 2000.
Does what it claims to do!
- Pros: It works! One-page manual, easy set up, no weirdness -- what a cool invention!
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: Having struggled with serial configuration in the past, I expected a nightmare of null modem cables and stop bit settings. Not at all! Plug the serial cable in one end, LAN cable in the other, load the software, set the baud rate, and voila: the PC talks to COMnn (pick any unused port number) just like a local serial device, but the device (an HVAC controller, in my case) is on the other side of the building!
Phone System Application
- Pros: This device is very easy to configure and works perfect. I used the NETRS232_1 to connect a Comdial FX-II phone system to the Internet for remote programming purposes. The virtual comm port installed by the provided software works flawlessly in VMMI (Comdial's programming software)
- Cons: The only small con I have with this product is StarTech only supports Windows x86 and no other operating system. A slight bummer for Mac/Linux users :(
