The MSI P965 Platinum is an LGA775 processor based motherboard using Intel’s P965 chipset that supports up to a 1066MHz front side bus. The 4 DDR2 DIMM sockets support up to 8GB of RAM (4GB if using DDR2-800). Support for up to 7 SATAII drives is provide by the ICH8R South Bridge and JMicron JMB361 chip with the 6 controlled by the ICH8R supporting RAID modes 0, 1, 5 and 10.
Two PCI-E x16 (electrically 1 x16 and 1 x4), 2 PCI-E x1 and 2 PCI slots provide plenty of expandability. The onboard gigabit LAN, 8 (4 back panel and 4 internal header) USB 2.0 ports and the 2 (1 back panel and 1 internal header) FireWire ports, and 8 channel audio with coax and optical SPDIF outs mean you don’t need to expand if you don’t want to.

Very happy with the board.
- Pros: Great features, great price, fast, stable. Good overclocking options. No flashing lights or any fashion show junk like that.
- Cons: Would be nice if the IDE was still built into the SB but it's not the end of the world. Are they ever going to discontinue some of those legacy (parallel, serial, etc) ports? And yes, I will agree that the 4x PCI-e "video slot" is not particularly useful for most people. Would have liked one more USB 2-port card bracket to be able to take advantage of all ten built-in USB ports.
- Other Thoughts: The only problem with Newegg's feedback is that you don't actually have to buy the product to review it. It's pretty obvious that in some of the reviews below, some people just read the specs and threw out an opinion based just on that. I actually purchased and installed the board and I have to say that I had zero problems. The board shipped with the latest BIOS (v1.1) and came right up on the first try with an E6600. No JMicron problems with the DVD drives. No black screen problems. No memory at the wrong voltage problems; the BIOS default was 1.9v which is enough to get started with default clocks.
Excellent MB but Jmicron issues
- Pros: Good price. Excellent reviews from multiple sources. Very good written manual. Nice layout. I like it. Have used MSI before with no problems.
- Cons: Jmicron driver for IDE is a headache. This is the cause of most problems you read.
If possible stay all SATA and you will have no headaches.
I use IDE DVD burner and it took a few trial and error attempts in setting BIOS settings after installing jmicron driver using F6 floppy during Windows install.
- Other Thoughts: Jmicron driver must be installed with a floppy using F6 during Windows install if you need IDE. No other way. This is the reason for so many BSOD and Windows install problems.
When installing Jmicron choose RAID driver and this will bring up the driver box where you will want to install IDE only. Use Intel for the 6 main SATA ports. Jmicron SATA is for the lone SATA port on the side. All others are Intel controlled. In BIOS Raid setting is for Jmicron. Has no effect on the Intel SATA ports. Make sure Intel drivers are all installed.
Odd0 (zero) means Optical Disk Drive 0 in the bios when booting up. If you had another device it would show Odd1 for optical device 1. This is NOT an error. Simply Jmicron driver showing it has found a device. It shows everytime on boot.

MSI Mother Board
- Pros: Very good board. Reliable, and very user friendly. CMOS setting easy to understand and easy to over clock.
- Cons: Would like to see at least one more Firewire connection on the board.
update on my openbox p965
- Pros: cheap
- Cons: Northbridge overheating. Dumb digicell program kept beepng and flashing.
- Other Thoughts: I took the NB heatsink off and the foil was still on it, apparently this is the reason it was openbox return. Peled foil off, cleaned it and reseated with arctic silver 5. Two days with no problems, running 24/7. I didn't check the southbridge. Dumb.
Great mobo, for a few months
- Pros: Worked as advertised out of the box on a Core2Duo.
- Cons: I understand computer parts don't last forever, but this one only made it a few months before dying. Came home from work one day and the computer was on but nobody was home. Swapped out several other parts ended up having the send this board back to newegg. Who refunded my original purchase price and I got a new board.
- Other Thoughts: Skip it. Just get the Asus P5B if you are in the market for a Core2Duo mobo.
