A full-featured motherboard with plenty of power, the MSI K9N4 SLI-F is great motherboard for anyone needing to replace or upgrade their system. Equipped with an AMD socket AM2, suitable for Athlon 64 processors, including the X2 and FX series, it's more than capable of handling anything you may want to run. Using the Nvidia nForce 500 SLI chipset, the K9N4 SLI-F supports the multi-card SLI technology, letting you use 2 graphics cards together for even more video power.
It also includes a gigabit Ethernet port, 7.1 channel onboard sound, and 4 SATA ports. And because of those 4 ports, by adding multiple hard drives to the system the K9N4 SLI-F supports RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 5. It's multiple expansion slots include two x16, and two x1 PCIe slots, plus an additional two PCI slots. Build yourself a killer system: the MSI K9N4 SLI-F is a great foundation!

Great Entry Level SLI for Socket AM2
- Pros: Considering you can get an AM2 socket motherboard and DDR2-800 as the memory standard ALONG WITH SLI support, this board makes for a great value. While everything else you get on this motherboard may seem like standard fare, at this price point, the board, along with its capabilities, is an absolute deal.
- Cons: Like it's non-SLI sibling, this board's layout is an issue; again the ATX power connector is in an awkward location. The northbridge fan doesn't cool the chipset as well as it probably should, and in general, cooling on this motherboard is not so great. With SLI, I gathered there would some heatpiping, but there is none. Also, considering that this geared towards gamers, the overclocking ability of this motherboard is quite limited.
- Other Thoughts: For those of you haven't noticed, the nForce 500 SLI equates to a nForce 4 SLI (NOT the nForce 4 SLI x16) that has been redesigned to support the AM2 socket. So make sure you get drivers/BIOS for the nForce 4 Series AMD.
Bargain MB (PCI x8)
- Pros: Great Price; has the features most people are looking for. Can't beat what you get for the price and MSI is usually top 5 in MBoard clocks. Hard to find better for the price. The NB fan doesn't seem as loud as I heard.
- Cons: This board has -only- x8 even though x16s fit. I thought it was a setting that people were missing in the BIOS and I was wrong. When I carefully looked at the slot and if anyone does you notice that it only has sotter points and pins that go halfway up the slot. So even in single mode you will be running at x8. I also noticed the ported Nforce 4 that the others mentioned as well. All advertisements say -compatible- with x8 express, but when you finally get your hands on the manual it does say runs at x8 speed. Even the MSI website says they operate at x8 if you look carefully but people might easily get that confused for when its in SLI mode like I first thought. Not the best marketing on this board on that part from MSI.
- Other Thoughts: All in all, the only reason I didn't give this board a 5 star and was tempted to give it a 3 star was because of the slot dissappoinment, but for 2 IDE slots when most carry one it does make up slightly. Most boards also carry heat pipe/sinks in the upper SLI boards for better cooling but I don't mind fans personally saves a little space sometimes, but if you wanted pinnacle cooling by about 5 to 10 degrees then go for it. You also can't really beat the price/quality though. Wish it was PCi x16 ~_~

ok but beware of memory
- Pros: overall has been pretty stable and allowed me to do what i wanted
- Cons: although it says that it supports 800 ddr2 memory that is not entirely accurate, i was running 1g of kingstons hyperx perfectly and recently upgraded another 2g, system started crashing left and right, did everything you could think of, got on msi's web site and they stated that 800 ddr2 voltage could be too much for the board to handle so i had to move the timings on the 3gs of memory down to 667ddr2 speeds. The information when i bought this and in the manuals was misleading and did not state this or i probably wouldn't have bought the board when i did, would have looked for something better. It seems to handed 2gb memory at 800 speed but the board doesn't seem to be able to handle more at that speed.
- Other Thoughts: it's nice to see that new egg now gives the right information about the pci 16x slots only running at 8x, when i bought this board the information only said that it had 2 16x capable slots for sli.
- Pros: Been using this board for about 10 months. Runs very stable and cool after replacing stock chipset fan with a Zalman fanless heatsink. Has two IDE ports.
- Cons: The stock chipset cooler is undersized and loud. The board is getting old in computer terms. The 8X PCIx slots didn't make any difference when the board came out. But it is limiting for anyone with a powerful video card today. It does not overclock well. I can't fit a dual slot video card in the first PCIx slot after upgrading to the larger heatsink on the chipset.
- Other Thoughts: I gave it 4 eggs because it has been extremely stable, easy to install and was an excellent purchase when it first came out, but it is starting to show its age. If you are upgrading and need the IDE ports and don't have a powerful video card this is a good buy. Also it only supports up to the 6000+ 89W CPU.
worst tech support ever in an industry that sets the bar low
- Pros: had, at least in theory, all the features needed for my particular application
- Cons: system was crashing whenever i'd run something intensive, like a game (not all that intensive, the system i built with it blows the minimum and even recommended sys req's for the game in question out of the water), so i contacted their tech support. brokid inglesh and under-knowledgeable tech support staff are sadly par for the industry, but firing back a response so fast there's no conceivable way they could have read the actual complaint, and managing to prove with that response that they in fact didn't read it, with regard to each and every aspect of the complaint one by one, is just inexcusable. after wading through that mess for a while, they finally told me to RMA it, at my own expense for shipping, and when i did, they sent me a replacement that was COMPLETELY DOA. doesn't even make it to the start of post. i'v broken corners off boards and had them make it further before dying.
- Other Thoughts: plus, the RMA process was so slow, now i can't return it for a refund, so the $$ i spent on it is a writeoff. i'l not be buying anything MSI ever again.
