1 out of 5 eggsMSI Board is Great, VIA Controller is Trash

Pros: Qualifies as paperweight. Manufactured by MSI, rugged, excellent layout and design, small and drops in on any mATX PC.

Cons: Controller by VIA. The VT8237 Controller is so clogged with shoddy firmware and software that this boards existence should be questioned. I have spent the better part of 2 months with both MSI and also VIA trying to resolve this issue. MSI quoted by way of email that this controller is NOT compatible whatsoever with Western Digital sATA II drives, however, I have confirmed this board does not work with any of my Western Digital drives at all. Prepare to spend lots of time reading the VIA forums at http://forums.viaarena.com/categories.aspx?catid=20&entercat=y

Other Thoughts: Just remember, you asked for my other thoughts. The employees at VIA need a healthy slapping by way of a rotten trout for letting this sad excuse of a controller enter the market. The MSI support group needs an overhaul and should offer extended hours with minimal staff to handle these late-day problems. MSI's support is excellent, but slow and not conveniently available. You can rest assured I will never buy another VIA product again. I wouldn't wish this series of events on a rookie technician.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, Standard Board.

Pros: the price, ease of installation, online documentation and support, motherboard layout, and functionality of drivers without ambiguous software funning in the background.

Cons: on-board video is anoying

Other Thoughts: my 12 year old sister installed this motherboard with my supervision on our parents computer. it worked flawlessly on the first install attempt, thankfully.

1 out of 5 eggs3 boards, 3 RMA's

Pros: MSI builds it
Newegg sells it

Cons: 100% failure rate... 3 for 3

Other Thoughts: I fix/build PC's for a living & use MSI boards exclusively. In five years I've never had a problem greater than needing a BIOS upgrade & I've NEVER had to RMA an MSI board. That's why I use them. So I bought two of these boards. Out of the box, one wouldn't POST, so I RMA'd to MSI. Okay. No big deal. It happens. The 2nd board worked better… for about 2 weeks. Then file corruption, BSOD’s galore, system tries to boot to CDROM drive, fails, wants system disk. Removed CDROM from boot order & system can’t find hard drive on every other boot. I've done everything I know to resolve these problems to no avail. So it's being RMA'd. The replacement board (for the 1st RMA) arrived today. Right out of the box & it won't install XP, locks up just prior to the 'press F8 to accept licensing...' screen. After 3 hours troubleshooting, swapping parts, etc., etc., it's RMA'd. That's 3 boards in a row. I've never RMA’d 3 in a row of ANYTHING before! I’ll stick with MSI but I’ve had enough of the KM4M-V.

1 out of 5 eggsVideo Not Working

Pros: Only thing that I can find for my sempron processor that fits in a MICRO ATX case

Cons: No video on screen, so I cannot read bios or anything. On the forums of MSI, I found that there are many postings with the same problem. The only thing that some has said to work is replacing it with another.

Other Thoughts: I have ordered many things from NewEgg and this is the first dud. As always the shipping is on time. Phone support is tough to get through (friendly when you do reach)+ sent a couple of emails with no response. Took two days, but now I am going to RMA for another.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: cheap, lots of features

Cons: 1. I have been unable to use software such as speedfan to control the fan speeds proportional to the temperatures in the computer.
Thus it can be rather loud.

2. There is a capacitor very close to the top left corner of the cpu socket, it can be seen in the second picture on newegg. If you have a larger heatsink, it might interfere with installation.
