A simple and inexpensive motherboard for the enthusiast or first time builder, the MSI K9VGM-V is a great starting point for anyone wanting to build a system or upgrade their motherboard. Designed with the small form factor case in mind, this motherboard will fit into most small desktop systems.
Equipped with an AMD socket AM2, suitable for Athlon 64 processors, including the X2 and FX series, MSI’s offering is more than capable of handling anything you may want to run. Using the VIA K8M890 chipset with integrated graphics in conjunction with up to 2GB’s of DDR2 memory, the K9VGM-V is perfect for those that don’t need a discrete graphics card.
It also includes a 10/100 Ethernet port, onboard 7.1 channel sound, and 2 SATA ports. With those 2 ports, this card supports adding multiple hard drives to the system through RAID 0 and RAID 1. It has multiple expansion slots, including one x16 and one x1 PCIe slots, plus an additional two PCI slots. For anyone building a dream system, the MSI K9VGM-V is a fine beginning.

Budget Board Extreme
- Pros: Great performance, MSI brand, cables included.
- Cons: The deduction of one egg was only due to MSI's failure to include 3 plastic motherboard "feet" for a board that does not match the generic screw patterns found in 99% of all cases these days. This leaves the IDE and power cables unsupported from underneath, so be careful not to crack/break motherboard with pressure when connecting IDE, power, and LED cables. When I find some extra "feet", I'm disassembling my tower and installing them.
No onboard front firewire support.
- Other Thoughts: Why can't motherboard manufacturers include a matching aluminum face-plate (back panel) for the board purchased?
Additionally, whoever theorized "one face-plate (back panel) to rule them all" should be held accoutable for all wounds caused during installation or removal of additional port covers.
Great board!
- Pros: Great budget board, great price, onboard vid, onboard sound. Ran PCBurn for 3 hours with 0 errors. Went together without a hitch powered on and not a problem since I built it.
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: Coupled this board with AMD X2 3800,Corsair VS1GB667D2 1GB DDR2-667. Stable as can be!

Great Little Board
- Pros: Build #1 using this board has been working at theoffice for more than a year. Steady as a rock. Recently completed build #2 using this board. Writing this review on it. Comes with a faceplate for the rear ports, which in turn aligns perfectly with the opening in a Winsis WN-19 Micro-ATX case. I have a third build just ahead using this same board again, but pre-installed in MSI's MBOX barebone because less expensive than separate mobo + case.
- Cons: None, really. Reading manuals and installation guides helps a lot. The drivers supplied on CD were outdated, but will at least get the machine going. After POST, BIOS routed video to the PCIEx16 graphics card instead of the onboard video port. Took me a worried minute to deduce that. Probably normal behavior, but ignorant me would have liked to find a mention of that "feature" in the manual.
- Other Thoughts: Connect the mobo ends of the IDE and floppy disk cables to the motherboard on a flat surface before installing it into the case, to reduce risk of flexing. Maybe put the RAM in as well, for the same reason. Connect front panel wires before installing graphics card, unless your hands are *a lot* smaller than mine. I
OK
- Pros: I just plugged in everything and did not experience any problems. Few features, but what is there works. Overclocked my X4800 from 2.4 to 2.8 ghz just fine even without a voltage increase option. Reasonable price.
- Cons: If I have a stick of ram in the second slot, the board is incapable of rebooting without giving a BSOD before the log in screen in Vista. I have to completely turn my computer off and on (and yes, I have tried different types of RAM). Also, MSI makes flashing the BIOS into a HUGE chore. You cannot get the files from their site. They require you to use their auto update software, which did not work for me.
- Other Thoughts: For the price I won't complain too much, but really I doubt I will be purchasing another motherboard from MSI.
Board Works - Mostly
- Pros: It's inexpensive. It works once you figure out what to turn off in the BIOS.
- Cons: The BIOS is amazingly short of features. Why did they omit the ability to turn the sound card on/off? That's EXTREMELY annoying.
As with every other motherboard I've ever bought, the BIOS features are severely under documented. I couldn't get the system to boot until I started turning stuff on/off (and I forgot what I actually did to get it to work).
- Other Thoughts: I got this to build a system for my sister(she's in New Mexico, I'm in Texas). I saw that someone else said that to enable the sound, you have to jumper some pins on the board.
I now have to find out which pins to jumper to get the sound to work, and then try to guide my non-technically-minded sister in how to find the pins to see if they're already jumpered. Not only that, but I have to send her a jumper via snail mail because MSI didn't provide the required jumper.
If it turns out that the motherboards sound stuff is broken, it will be less hassle just to buy a sound card instead of getting a replacement motherboard. I am pretty sure I can talk my sister through installing a sound card, but installing a motherboard is WAY over her head, and I'm not inclined to have here ship the system back to me so I can do it.
I certainly wouldn't buy one of these for myself.
