Excellent motherboard, but make sure to update the BIOS
- Pros: Supports the Intel Core 2 Duo. Has lots of ports integrated into the motherboard, and the legacy serial port can be disabled in the BIOS. Comes with external WiFi antenna plus the bottom of the antenna is magnetic, so it easily snaps to your computer case. Comes with a 2xUSB 2.0 dongle and a FireWire dongle. Also comes with everything you need to set up a SATA RAID (except the hard disks), Q-connectors for easier installation, and a good microphone. I didn't need the 2 extra mounts that were provided. The heat pipe is a nice feature for cooling.
- Cons: Picky about the RAM. It would be wise to look up the compatible RAM types before buying RAM for this motherboard. The motherboard manual, which contains the compatible RAM list, is available from the ASUS web site. You may need to find a low-end but compatible stick of RAM to use to update the BIOS to support high-end RAM. Without updating, you may not even get to the POST. Note: another reviewer (MaK) said that ASUS will send you a free updated BIOS chip if you call ASUS. So, if you can't get to the POST and don't have a compatible spare DDR2 stick, try calling ASUS. Anyway, I received an error during POST and had to flash the BIOS in order to support the Core 2 Duo E6300. In any case, updating the BIOS is the first thing you should do after installation - updating the BIOS from a USB pen drive is quick and easy, instructions are in the motherboard manual.
- Other Thoughts: If you have AC'97 front panel audio, you must go into the BIOS setup and explain that you are using AC'97 and not HD for your front panel audio. Do not connect the fan that snaps onto the end of the heat pipe unless you are setting up a passive-cooler or water-cooler cooling system - it will interfere with an ordinary cooling system. The PATA connector is turned on its side, making connection of a PATA device like a DVD drive a little more interesting. All in all, this is an excellent motherboard.
How to fix JMicron PATA Operation with CD & DVD drives
- Pros: Very fast and stable operation.
- Cons: It takes some work to get CD and/or DVD IDE drives to work using UDMA with the JMicron IDE Controller (this is the only PATA controller on the board).
- Other Thoughts: The JMicron controller on this and any motherboard that used the ICH8/ICH8R southbridge has to be specifically
configured to use UDMA modes. If not, then performance will be slow and you will not be able to burn CDs or DVDs. To do this you can perform the following procedure: 1) install JMicron by running the AsusSetup.exe (JMB363 dir of P5B CD) 2) right click My Computer and select Properties 3) in Systems Properties select Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager 4) in Device Manager expand SCSI and RAID controllers entry 5) right click on Jmicron controller entry and select Update Driver 6) in "Can Windows connect to Windows Update" select "Yes, this time only" and click Next 7) in "What would you want the wizard to do?" select "Install the software automatically" and click Next 8) the wizard lists all the Jmicron drivers and "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" driver, select the "Standard" driver for installation 9) When done, the system will be using standar

Best motherboard ever
- Pros: Booted up right out of the box. This is the MB you want to get and you will not spend all your time with RMA the MB but just enjoying all the speed that this MB has. Everything works on this MB right out of the box. Great on update bios.
- Cons: None at all
- Other Thoughts: If I ever find something that could be added I will tell you later. But for now it's perfect. Just stay away from the P5K Deluxe wifi MB it is trash, dont bealeve me? just ask ASUS Tec and they will tell you the same thing. Stay with this P5B Deluxe wifi and you will love it.
Solid & Stable
- Pros: Very nice MB with all the bells & wistles for over clocking. Wireless works great never had a need to use wired network. VERY STABLE board if setup right.
- Cons: NONE / USB connections are at the bottom of the board so if you want a card reader at the top of your case like I did, you might need an extension cable.
- Other Thoughts: I used this board for my new CAD workstation and it rocks. Don't use the over clocking features if you don't know what you are doing or can't afford good memory.
A good Mobo
- Pros: Onboard Wifi.
4 onboard USB ports + 2 additional ports in box. 2 Ethernet ports. External SATA port. RAID availability.
Q Connector rocks. One of the pins came out on mine so it doesn't work anymore, but just having it is an excellent reference, especially if this is one of the first times you are installing a new motherboard. Made my life 100x easier.
- Cons: Wifi does not work as well as I hoped. I used the wifi for 2 days, but the adapter would occasionally disappear (OS would no longer see it). So I just switched to one of the 2 Ethernet ports, which works flawlessly. Some driver compatibility issues.. see other comments.
- Other Thoughts: This mobo has some excellent features, a ton of ports and almost every part of it has room for expansion. The onboard wifi is an awesome touch, but this board is not without problems..
The onboard Wifi does not work well enough to use for long periods. After a few hours, my OS stopped recognizing the wifi card until I re-installed the drivers and rebooted. Also, the antenna for Wifi is not very long. It does not even reach my desk from the back of the computer, so it needs to sit on the floor or on top of my case.
Also, there are definitely driver compatibility issues. Because I have only had the board for a few days, I have not discovered exactly what they are, but installing all the latest drivers (especially the JMicron drivers) causes some ports to disable and all-around funkiness. My advice, pick up the board (as long as you are not relying on it for wifi) and install new chipset drivers from the CD or website, and let windows handle the rest of the driver updates.
