ATX-size with Fast SLI Graphics. No need to use a big server tower.
- Pros: I couldn't get Ubuntu or Vista Ultimate x64 to load with 16 Gigs of Kingston RAM. I brought it down to 8 Gigs of RAM, and every OS loaded smoothly with no problems. The sockets are close to each other, but I'm using two "giant" Scythe Ninja heatsinks with two "quiet" 120mm Zalman fans. I have the motherboard inside a Lian Li PC-A71B full tower, and that leaves plenty of room for cables and hardware! I had problems starting the ASUS KFN32-D SLI/SAS but this mobo booted right up! I'm using a modified BFG Tech 8800 Ultra with a Thermalright Xtreme HR-03 CPU Cooler. There are only small visible areas of the motherboard. ATX format is compact for a server chassis. The video graphics are fast and responsive on this board. I'm using two AMD Opteron 2220 2.8Ghz processors. Wow, ...this computer is fast!
- Cons: Had to modify the Scythe Ninja fastening hardware to make a pair (bent one swivel handle about 40 degrees. Fits like a glove! Doesn't use "expensive" Shanghai processors (45nm).
- Other Thoughts: The Shanghai version of this board is found at MNPC Tech. It's called the ASUS KFNS5-D SLI. Newegg carries higher versions of the ASUS KFN series mobo. I think I'm going to get the Shanghai version? Yeah!!!
Good Barcelona Qad Core Board
- Pros: This is a good solid motherboard for Barcelona Quad Core processors. Had very few problems getting it set up. Like the layout for cables, worked well with my case. Very stable, no problems yet. Tones of sata ports, plenty of usb ports, good heatsink mounts. SLI on a reasonably priced server board, oh ya.
- Cons: No support for Shanghai Opteron processors. That's right, there is no support for them, and in talking to Asus Tech, either none is planned for, or the board is simply incapable. I couldn't get a straight answer.
Card, CPU and ram layout. Ram is too close to the CPU's so if you are using a large heatsink, keep in mind you may have to modify. They could have alotted for a few more expansion slots, but hey, with onboard everything, you don't need much expansion. Had to flash the Bios to get it to work with 8346 processors. Asus does not list them as supported, but they work. Will be switchin over to 2352's soon anyway, so no big deal.
- Other Thoughts: Chipset (northbridge) gets hot. No fan is supplied and with the location of the chip directly behind the expansion slots, there is no room for one. It sould have been located further back or further up the board. I haven't had an overheating problem yet, but then, I haven't pushed it all the way to it's limits yet. We'll see.
Quad-Core Ready??? Shanghai 2378
- Pros: Is This ready for Shanghai QuadCore 2378 processors? I have 2212's but they're slow. Please, if someone knows, post the answer.
- Cons: If it doesn't handle Quad Cores then it will be a point against it.
- Other Thoughts: I wonder if somebody will answer my questions. Sometimes I just wonder ...... all by myself with chips and bytes and bits alike.

Manufacturer Response:Dear Valued Customer, Our KFN5-D server board can support Barcelona quad core processors but not Shanghai quad core processors.
