The ASUS P5B-E comes with a load of proprietary operating features, for extreme performance, minimum noise, and maximum energy saving. Based on the Intel P965 chipset, this motherboard is quad-core ready and supports all of Intel's Dual Core processors (Socket T). It features the AI NOS utility that automatically detects system loads and provides immediate system adjustments to boost performance. The Precision Tweaker gives you precise voltage control for the CPU (vCore) and memory (vDIMM), and the incorporated SFS (Stepless Frequency Selection) provides easy adjustments of the CPU FSB and memory clock speed.
In case the system hangs up due to overclocking failure, the ASUS C.P.R. overclocking protection tool allows amendment of system settings from the BIOS and eliminates the need for manual clearance of CMOS data. The ASUS Quiet Thermal Solution (AI Gear, AI Nap, and Q-Fan 2) improves performance across the system by providing a silent, cool environment.
With its 8 GB max capacity DDR2 800 dual channel memory system architecture, PCI-E X16 graphic card slot, six expansion slots (3 x PCI-E X1 + 3 x PCI), and nine ATA connectors (8 x SATA + 1 x PATA), it is an excellent option for a mid-range gaming platform, with extreme flexibility and room for a lot of power!

Just can't beat it
- Pros: Love this board and judging by a review on Anandtech’s site, this is one of the best P965 boards for OC’n. I paired this board with Intel’s E6400 (2.13Ghz) and Patriot’s eXtreme Performance 240-Pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400), Zalman’s 92mm CNPS9500, Nvidia 7600GS (budget dictates) and three Seagate SATA 320GB drives in a RAID 0. The stock heat sink is more than adequate but doesn’t look as cool as Zalman’s solution. All told, I’m OC the E6400 from stock speeds of 2.13Ghz to 3.7Ghz and have been running stable for a week now. CPU temps hover at 48c idle and right below 50c under intense load. This system is benchmarking right up there with the fastest retail systems currently available. For the money, I think this is a great buy and a very stable platform even if you aren’t looking to OC.
- Cons: Memory voltage is limited to 2.1v so unless you purchase top end memory modules, this could impact OC’n. I have ver 1.01g of the board, ver 1.02g is supposed to support higher memory voltages expected to be widely available towards the end of October. The supplied AI utility that is provided for OC’n or CPU adjustments isn’t very stable and requires rebooting the system for every change. Make the OC’n changes manually in the BIOS and save yourself some time. The latest trend seems to be to limit the number of IDE channels due to limited board space. Most of you will need to think about purchasing an additional IDE controller as I did. With two IDE DVD burners and an older IDE drive, the single IDE channel (2 IDE devices) just isn’t adequate.
- Other Thoughts: I’m waiting for memory prices to come down to purchase faster memory just to see how much I can squeak out of the processor. Unlike other reviewers, I didn’t have any problem with the Patriot DDR2 2.1v memory module booting on initial build. If you need the network driver on initial build of XP, put it on a disc as XPSP2 doesn’t recognize it on initial build. Contrary to speculation by others, there is NO significant difference in speed between the v1.01g and v1.02g versioned boards. Anandtech did a review on this as well and is worth the read for those who would like to educate themselves instead of being swayed by speculation. Integrated SATA RAID control leaves something to be desired. Performance is adequate but could be a lot better with a third party controller.
100% overclockable on rev 1.02G, 40% on Rev 1.01G
- Pros: if your lucky enough to get one with rev 1.02G you can buy a Thermalright HR-05 northbridge chipset cooler and an aftermarket cpu cooler and your conroe cpu will reach 100% overclock I got my E6600 to 5ghz and its stable running 45 degrees on full load and its stable on all test i performed
- Cons: if your unlucky and receive the 1.01G revision motherboard you will be very limited to your overclocking abilitys the most you will get out of a rev 1.01G is a 40% overclock when you compare that to a 100% overclock for the same product it feels like your getting handed an inferior product.
- Other Thoughts: This motherboard is one of the best overclocking boards on the market today reaching a stable 100% overclock while motherboards like the P5B, P5B Deluxe and P5W DH have trouble reaching 80% overclock. The only downside to it is that there are two revisions that were released when this motherboard came out rev 1.01G shipped with 2.1Vdim & Intel P965 C1 while rev 1.02G shipped with 2.45vdim & Intel P965 C2. Its a guessing game to see which you get

Great MOBO!
- Pros: Nice clean board.
Everything works with vista and Ubuntu Gutsy Gibon (7.10). Loads of USB and SATA ports. Easy setup.
- Cons: Manual could be more clear in some areas... When inserting RAM, put your PAIRS of DIMMS in matching color slots (or so I read somewhere online... no clear in manual)
- Other Thoughts: I have two of them (one with Core 2 Duo E4400 and one with E6600).
Works GREAT with CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) (frequently on sale at newegg). Both have a samsung SATA DVD RW Second board was a newegg openbox (warning: no I/O plate or any cable/manual/CD). I had: "intel CPU uCode loading error" when booting. I just downloaded the latest BIOS from asus.com and unzipped it on a usb thumb drive. Then I used Asus EZ Flash 2 (built in the bios) to backup my mobo's bios and burn the new one all in less than 5 minutes! BRAVO ASUS!
- Pros: Best bang for the buck. I can plug in what I got now and lots of room to grow on.
- Cons: Only down side of this board was the mount hole down on the power plug in for the case. When you push in your connectors the board bends. Also, the first board I got was defective at the same point. But suport from ASUS was great.
- Other Thoughts: none
Lasted 8 months, then ~poof~
- Pros: (check other entries)
- Cons: PC just froze and on reboot, no SATA recognized. Did the usual installs of drivers, "look for new hardware" in XP, updated BIOS... nuo joy.
- Other Thoughts: Now I get to stick my SATAs in external enclosures at USB speeds, "hooray!" (Or RMA it for a replacement, but then I'm without a PC for a week? Pass.)
