4 out of 5 eggsGood budget server board

Pros: Has all the features I needed. The board layout is nice. Been running flawlessly for 8 months.

Cons: Can't use ICH7R features w/ Linux and under Windows the disk I/O is still not optimal. Pentium D setup was clunky.

Other Thoughts: Believe it or not, you can flash the BIOS using a floppy with Pentium D installed even though it doesn't POST. Probably not an issue with newer boards. I had to do this the hard way back in April.

4 out of 5 eggsVery solid board

Pros: Small form factor, not a lot of unneeded slots. Extremely stable.

Cons: Needed a BIOS update to work with my P-D 950. I had to run out and buy a Celeron D chip to do the update before the board would work. Also, the heatsink in front of the PCIe slots blocks some cards with legs. I had to cut off the leg on my Areca 1210 RAID card before it would fit in the slot.

Other Thoughts: A very good board - just check those PCIe cards and be prepared to make modifications if needed.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but Pentium D trouble.

Pros: Great value.

Cons: Like many of the people who posted here, I was pulling my hair out setting this thing up. I couldn't even get the thing to POST with my Pentium D. Sent the CPU back only to have the same problem with the replacement. Finally I resolved with after several calls to Asus when the tech told me the BIOS version that came on the board was not compatible with Pentium D. Of course if you can't post you can't flash the BIOS. I had to wait for them to mail me a new current BIOS chip.

Other Thoughts: After replacing the bios it was fine. Hopefully the ones they are shipping now don't have this problem.

2 out of 5 eggsASUS usually makes good boards... not this time

Pros: Well it's defective, so...

Cons: It's a piece. Tried all three BIOS revisions and I cannot for the life of me get this thing to install XP without throwing a blue screen. Newegg warranty doesn't cover the board, and ASUS is telling me it is warranted through the reseller, so I gotta figure out this mess now.

Other Thoughts: Waste of time. Tried two different chips (both Pentium D 8XX), with different RAM and still can't get more than 30 seconds into a Windows install before crashing.

2 out of 5 eggsRisky with Presler

Pros: Full featured board. Pretty much what everyone else has said.

Cons: No matter what I did it wouldn't work with my 930 Presler Pentium D. Tried different brands of memory, diiferent ways to upgrade the bios, etc. Ended up refunding the board and getting a more expensive one.

Other Thoughts: ASUS does not provide a support forum for this board. If you want support you have to post on the forums for other boards. Also, ASUS never seems to respond to support requests about this board.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid, Stable

Pros: Excellent Matrix RAID controller. Onboard video is good quality.

Cons: Wouldn't even POST when I first set it up, had to use the "Crash-Free" option to get it up and running. Also, couldn't use the "Smart Fan" option: almost like it was confusing the CPU temp and MB temp, since the MB temp was always hotter. Couldn't get it to run an array of SATA II drives as 3Gb/sec, either. Not sure if that's an Intel Matrix issue or a Seagate issue; could be operator error, but I read up on everything I could about both.

Other Thoughts: No onboard audio, since it's a server board.

5 out of 5 eggsRunning fine with Pentium D 930

Pros: Running MB with Pentium D 930, both as shipped. NO BIOS UPDATE NEEDED. MB functioning as expected.

Cons: Only problem was that MB didn't appear to boot with first power up. Resolved that onboard VGA (default on) was disabled.

Other Thoughts: Planning on another great run with ASUS MB.

4 out of 5 eggsFlash the BIOS First!

Pros: As I said - I used another CPU and sure enough - it worked (see Cons). They pack a lot of stuff on this little (Micro-ATX) board! As stated, it has TWO (2) 32 bit PCI slots and 2 PCI Express slots. It also has RAID 5 which it doesn't say on the Specs (I didn't try it though).

Cons: If you are going to use a Dual Core Pentium D 9xx - You must flash the BIOS BEFORE you install the CPU - that means you must have another CPU that will work. Even a cheapo Celeron with an LGA 775 mount will work, but you MUST do it or it just locks up and it will be RMA time!

Other Thoughts: There are two BIOS versions on the ASUS site, 0203 and 0204, the dates on the DL page are the same, but 0204 is 3 months newer than 0203 (12/2005). 0204 seems to work quite well. I have only tried ECC RAM in it (Crucial 677) as specified, and it works fine after a BIOS reflash.

2 out of 5 eggsPressler 9xx doens't work?

Pros: The board seems well designed (Most ASUS MOBOs are), and it has what I needed in the way of Interfaces (by the way, it has 2 - 32 bit PCI slots, not 1)

Cons: Even though the Pentium D 930 is listed on the ASUS site as compatible, I have my doubts (Mine doensn't work). Hold off one day buying the pair (Pressler core - 9xx and P5MT) until I gut my friend's machine later today to borrow an older CPU (Pentium 8xx) with the 775 socket and I will let you know! Rumor on the ASUS site is that a BIOS upgrade will solve it - but I am not so sure. It may be RMA time. Like I said - I will let you know later today!!!

Other Thoughts: This much power in a MicroATX - whooda thunk it? If I could only get it to work...
