2 out of 5 eggsFair board for core duo - problems galore

Pros: Nice overclocking - fair memory control - first 4 satas very nicely handled

Cons: No conroe support, dual enet ports very difficult to split and forget the upper 4 raid sata - very unreliable

Other Thoughts: This was overpriced by 3x for how it performs and ASUS support is almost non existent

5 out of 5 eggsConroe/Core2Duo confusion

Pros: See my earlier post 7/15/2006, but Conroe support is questionable.

Cons: See my earlier post 7/15/2006
- Furthermore: I had to install old Realtek 8139 PCI NIC and disable the onboard Marvell/Yukon controller because Marvell LAN driver (x64 system) would not work with onboard NIC! According to Asus.com forums, the onboard NIC has problems when PCI-X card is installed, in my case Adaptec 29320 controller.

Other Thoughts: After reading numerous reports, Conroe support is not clear. The board's VRM might not support Conroe, but haven't been able verify VRM info of different boards.

One report mentioned that Core2 Duo might not work, but Core2 Extreme would. Confusing: Both P5WDG2-WS and P5WDG2-WS Pro have rev. 1.02G, but supposedly only Pro supports Conroe.

Since this is a premium priced mainboard marketed as an extreme workstation with superior expandability (see: Asus.com), in my opinion, if Conroe will not be supported, Asus should give consumers the option to send back P5WDG2-WS boards to vendors to exchange for Pro version for a small fee.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat board but wait for the pro version

Pros: The most stable board I ever used, easy to setup and lots of bios options for everything, great built in easy overclocking profiles as well.

Cons: price! doesn't support conroe

Other Thoughts: Wait fo the newer "PRO" version of this board if you want to run conroe ( aka core 2 duo ) except for the extreme editions, this is probably the best board ( reliability, stability, performace ) you can get but it's expensive.

5 out of 5 eggsnice motherboard

Pros: very high build quality, works well, intel raid controller easy to setup, overclocks well, gig ethernet works, overclocked 3.2Ghz DuoCore to 3.875Ghz just fine.

Cons: wish it had 2 COM ports, its a bit pricey

Other Thoughts: very well built, drivers worked, although I did have to hunt around for them a bit, not a big deal. using the Intel RAID controller with (2) 320GB drives in Raid 1, works great.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Since this was exactly what I was looking for to meet a particular need it had all the features I was looking for. It runs great like the last ASUS board I had I will probably buy another ASUS board for the next PC I build.

Cons: I had a rather small case, a mid tower ATX case so I had some issues with heat and the AI quiet fan had to be disabled to keep things cool enough. I installed a 3.4 GHz Pentium D with a retail Intel heat sink and fan. I ended up having to install an extra fan in my case to move more air through my case to keep things cool. It put my fan total at two fans moving air in and one moving air out plus the Power supply fan also pulling air out so it runs a little loud with 4 80MM fans.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest a large case to have a bit more air volume inside the case and possible liquid cool if you want quiet while it runs.

5 out of 5 eggsWarnning!! do not post false info.

Pros: This mobo may not be the best out there for the Core 2, but it is supported. javascript:Start('/PDF/247090.pdf')

Read the manual

Cons: Doesnt OC as well as other boards

Other Thoughts: Get it if you really think you must have it. I think Asus bit off a little to much on the board.

5 out of 5 eggsWarning!!! Core2 support is not Confirmed!!!

Pros: Great board a little expensive but very stable. I would urge anyone intrested to visit Asus Forums and research before buying. Thats where you get facts not stories.

Cons: Price. I have had a few problems but all have been solved by simply reading through the Asus forums.

Other Thoughts: CURRENTLY there is no support for CONROE I have searched the Asus forums. There are rumors but nothing in black and white yet. So if you have to have Conroe wait for the P5WDG2-WS PRO to be released which does support Conroe. They may or may not be able to support Conroe.

5 out of 5 eggsBest laid out mobo on the market

Pros: - 2 PCI-X slots
- 2 PCI x16 slots
- supports Crossfire/SLI
- stable
- Core 2 Duo support

Cons: - it runs quite hot

Other Thoughts: For SCSI enthusiasts, the PCI-X slots are brilliant and will leave 2 additional PCI slots to play around with.

The placement of the PCI x16 slots is one of its kind, i.e. there are no slots between them that might become unusable and you will only lose 1 PCI-X slot if you run a SLI/Crossfire system

4 out of 5 eggsGood and bad

Pros: Lots of SATA and RAID connectors, PCIe x 16!, easy to set up, top-end card - does it ALL. Ref des on all connectors helps with hookup.

Cons: The board runs VERY hot - CPU - 47C/60C (P4 955extreme), NBridge 39C/42C - MUST H20 cool.

Seems to be a problem with the Marvell SATA RAID drivers - intermittent lockups, event log says one or the other of 2 SATA drives in RAID 0 "times out". Could be Windows but I suspect a hardware/software problem.

Video card blocks tabs on RAM slots - must remove to add/replace RAM

Other Thoughts: I don't recommend a RAID 0 setup with this guy, at least if you use the Marvell RAID chipset. Just WAY too flaky and it's always an adventure at boot and the risk of losing your data is too high.
Although it sounds like I have a lot of beefs with this board, I still think that it is THE board to get - LOTS of capability and you won't need to upgrade for a good while.

5 out of 5 eggsNice!

Pros: I'm not going to list all the pros, but this motherboard does stand out above the rest in these areas:
- Seems to recover well from incorrect BIOS settings or overclocking
- 64bit PCI!
- Stable as a rock
- Lots of settings available in BIOS for tweakers
- Marvell SATA/RAID seems to be fixed with latest beta driver

Cons: - Full length 64bit cards in the second slot will block 2 of your SATA ports
- Marvell... why ASUS? Why?
- Utilizing Crossfire blocks 1 of 2 valuable 64-bit slots
- Many breakout plates required to get all I/O at rear of comp, may not be feasible for some computer cases.

Other Thoughts: Overall I am pleased with this board. It has met my expectations and performs it's duties without a hitch.

I do wish some of "cons" were changed. The Marvell SATA and LAN is poor compared to competitors. Although the Marvel SATA/RAID has improved with the latest BIOS and will actually pickup a SATA CD-ROM such as a Plextor PX-716A.

BTW, the SATA ports along the bottom edge are for the Marvell controller. The SATA ports that can get covered by a full length 64bit card are the Intel ports, which is a bummer.
