Follow Up - Painless RMA
- Pros: One morning the computer wouldn't boot up. Isolated the problem to the motherboard. By that evening I had a shipping address and RMA number. I ended up dropping it off since they are local. Exactly 1 week later (Under 5 business days) I had a fixed motherboard at my doorsteps. VERY FAST PHONE PICKUP AND EMAIL RESPONSE.
- Cons: The motherboard died after 5 months, but supermicro repaired it in under a week.
- Other Thoughts: Tech support was knowledgable. Phone for RMA and Tech would be answered in under 20 seconds. Emails were responded to within 20 minutes.
A+ Customer Service
- Pros: Works. Good board. Tech support extremely helpful.
- Cons: No Firewire. Unusually tight fit to the motherboard tray.
- Other Thoughts: Upon opening the board electrostatic bag, I noticed that the packet of silica jell was broken and silica jell granules were strewn all over the components and in PCI slots, etc.. I cleaned them off, thinking nothing, but the board ended up DOA. Did an RMA with newegg, I recommend Supermicro though since they do cross shipping.
A few less than optimal items
- Pros: Seems to be rock solid. Rev 2+ handles 51xx (woodcrest) or 53xx (clovertown) CPUs.
- Cons: Onboard soundcard is a relic. There is no onboard firewire. Had to reshape the 8 pin power connector due to lack of clearance with nearby capacitors. Board fills an Extended ATX case and requiers that the CPU heat sinks be mounted to the case.
- Other Thoughts: This board requires a 500+ watt SSI power supply.
