Superb
- Pros: Simply amazing. Gigabyte really did well making nVidia's 6600GT GPU a monster graphics processor. Installation was very easy, like most video cards. Performance? This card excels in all areas. This thing tears through any game with blazing fast framerate and solid graphics for an AGP8x (running 128MB). Plays Half Life 2/CS: Source very well, 80-120fps on high settings. BF2 is a breeeze too, runs perfectly on highest resolution. When coupled with 1GB ram and a nice monitor, this card is amazing in all areas and is an EXCELLENT buy. Tackles any high-end game with excellent speeds, even for an AGP.
- Cons: I have owned this card for about 2 weeks and can find nothing negative about it. Really the only con it has is being itself - AGP 8x, which is still very good, but it is slowly being phased out due to PCI-E.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, a perfect card for anyone running a medium-high spec machine looking for some power but still has their old AGP motherboard! When overclocked, speeds almost double and it runs like a 6800/GT. I highly reccomend overclocking it, but remember to keep it cool and make sure you have proper air flow. You'd expect to pay at least $200++ for such an amazing card and yet it's worth every penny.
- Pros: Passive
- Cons: None in my application
- Other Thoughts: This 6600GT is used in my HTPC. I use the included dongle to output over component to my HDTV. The card works very well with VMR 9 and SageTV 4. No more stuttering while playing DVDs or while watchhing Over The Air HDTV.
I installed a low CFM slot fan below the card for extra ventilation, and I've never seen the heatsink get over 37*C (I use an external sensor). I don't check the GPU temp...please don't get confused.
Sweet Spot
- Pros: 2nd highest end nvidia card for AGP (behind 6800gt). Video capture. Plays BF2 at 1280x1024 at medium settings very smooth. Plays source engine very well. Silent card. This card should get you through until you want Vista and a new PCIe board (you want more ram than old boards support).
- Cons: I have to use a pc slot fan to cool the heatsink. Begins to artifact in DoD at above 75C (might just be bad contact with heatsink, new board). Heat management is something you must consider for installation and playing. It gets Very hot during BF2 sessions.
- Other Thoughts: Spellforce is the game included, if you were curious. Low overclocks with my board (518 & 1123) but still faster than almost all other 6600gt cards out of the box.
