5 out of 5 eggsNuclear Reactor

Pros: It's a 4850, probably one of the best value cards of two generations ago. Even at 1080p it will eat up most games on high, if not, you can just drop the settings a notch.

Cons: It can load up to 120c. I have great airflow, in particular, and it still would load up to >100c ingame. So, the next best thing to not void the warranty was to ziptie a 120mm fan to it, even then - it still loads 80c, atleast the fan doesn't kick up.

Other Thoughts: If anyone remembers the 4xx fermi "nuclear reactor" jokes, they cannot get anywhere near this card in terms of heat. Simply put, a friends 6970s (stacked, literally pancaked together) ran cooler then this card does.

**If you have the chance to buy this card used, even new, you should avoid it, unless you like having a radiant space heater in your house. If it's used, buy a cheap aftermarket cooler. (Since it won't have a warranty, unless it's XFX)

4 out of 5 eggsHot!

Pros: Price and performance. I love it how it handles

Cons: Hot..Hot... The problem is the cooling system.

Idle 80c...full load 110c.....even with new thermal grease
I do not have any problem when I play games, but
afraid that it might explode!

Other Thoughts: E7500 overclocked at 3.3Ghz
PC6400 4GB
HD4850
WD 100GB 7200RPM

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Fast, reliable, ONE SLOT, quiet, drivers work great, stays fairly cool considering it only has a one slot cooler.

Cons: Still does get a little bit toasty. Other than that, NONE!

Other Thoughts: I have had this card for awhile now and it has been working flawlessly. I can play ANY game, even Crysis with decent settings. The temp's range from 55c idle to 80 at load, in a 24c room. Drivers work great, I can even install new drivers in vista without the need for a restart!!
Those of you who see high temps with this card, make sure you have adequate ventilation in your case!!

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy This

Pros: Decent gaming when it works.

Cons: Crashes constantly due to high temps.

Other Thoughts: As others have said, this card idles at 85C and goes north of 105C under load. Unless I set the fan at 70%+ the temps would not fall under 80C and for that you get a card as loud as a 2 stroke lawnmower. Mine burnt itself up and would not even post after less than 6 months. This card is NOT representative of HIS design, as I believe it's a stock ATI card with an HIS badge on it. Please get one of their ICEQ or similar cards and avoid this at all costs.

2 out of 5 eggsNot the best 4850

Pros: Tackles most games with ease.

Cons: Hot Hot Hot, idles at 80c out of the box and after a quick fan fix mod to crank the fans up to 75% at all times i brought it down to 70c. It still gets as high as 110c under load and a few times has reached critical shut off temp playing vanguard. Its also very loud with the fans running at 75%. I wouldn't recommend buying this particular 4850.

4 out of 5 eggsDriver Update

Pros: Previous review I had a glitch with (rare) randon card shutdowns on start up. Installed new driver update and this bug seems to have gone away. 9.7 install with Vista was trouble free.
ATI Catalyst ver 9.7 ref 0910 release date 8/5/2009

Cons: Under XP I had no problems updating HIS drivers. Switched to Vista and had fits with install failures for the 9.5 driver version. Had to uninstall everything and start fron scratch. Eventually worked.

Other Thoughts: Vista Ultimate 32
Antec 900 case with Signature 650 PS
ASUS P5E3 X38 MB/Intel Extreme DDR3 by OCZ
Intel Q9650
Dual 24" monitors

4 out of 5 eggsKeep the faith! (Rebate Arrives!!!!)

Pros: It works fine eventually but needs messing with. Updated driver allows manual (not auto) fan set. I'm at 60% (still no noise) and card temp stays at 38-40 oC. Antec 900 case so lots of airflow.

Cons: Card was more stable under XP than Vista even with updated drivers. Must run Catalyst optimizer first to even run Google Earth, otherwise will freeze. Updating drivers for this card was not fun. Occasional rare card shut down/recover at startup. No other time. Not a problem as long as it recovers and it does.

Other Thoughts: The rebate finally arrived. Bought 9 months ago. E-mail "acknowledgment of rebate submission" 8 months ago. E-mail "processing completed" FYI 5 months ago. Another e-mail FYI "processing complete" 2 months ago. E-mail FYI "rebate sent" 2 weeks ago and the CHECK ACTUALLY ARRIVED LAST WEEK!!!!!!! (I cashed it and it didn't bounce)

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's a 4850; a decent card.

My friend has had this card for over a year, and I borrowed it for a few weeks while my card was being RMA'd.

Cons: Idles at 75 C with the fan at 50%; goes up to 98 C under full load, and that's without overclocking.

My case is quite large and has three 120mm fans; does this card even have a copper heatsink, or is it just another flimsy painted-to-look-like-copper heatsinks? Terrible.

And why the hell is the price is STILL $199 CAD!?

There's absolutely no reason why you should be looking at buying this card when you could get a Sapphire 4850 for $107 CAD, or a 4870 1GB for under $160 CAD or GTX 260 216 core for under $175 CAD, both of which absolutely destroy the 4850.

If you're looking at buying this card for $199 CAD then you know nothing about computers.

5 out of 5 eggsPurchased 10 months ago from Newegg

Pros: Along with a AMD dual core 6000+, 3GB ram, Winfows XP 32 bit. This 4850 plays Crysis very well on all high settings with no AA, 1440 x 900 Acer Monitor. Card is made to withstand a lot of heat.

Cons: Like most computer parts I paid $174.99 and now you can get good brand 4870 for the same amount. Card on auto fan settings being idle averages between 68 - 71C with the AC on and one exhaust case fan.

Other Thoughts: Don't expect to get your rebate back from HIS. I mailed UPC code cut out of box (use your scanner and send a copy), called them and still couldn't get my $20 rebate. Because of this I will try a different brand for my next computer build. Would buy from them again without rebates.
