Excellent value, works very well
- Pros: Very good to excellent image quality and excellent software support by third parties (SnapStream, ATI's own software, Sage, open source software). Stable Windows drivers by ATI that install easily. The price for this card is very reasonable now that the ATI Theater 650 Pro-based boards are about to hit the market. If you don't expect to use the 650's OTA HDTV features (remember, no QAM for cable HDTV) then save your money and get the 550-based cards. All the boards featuring the ATI Theater 550 Pro chipset are pretty much the same and can all use the same software, so buy based on price and use the software that works best for you.
- Cons: None...it does what it was designed to do well. Next step up is to get HDTV capable board, preferably one with QAM support, but that will need to wait for software support in Vista.
- Other Thoughts: All the boards that have the ATI Theater 550 Pro chipset are essentially the same, only the bundled software and any included remote control will be different. I got this card because it was the least expensive and paired it with a Beyond TV 4/Firefly remote package from SnapStream for an additional $xx which gave me the free program guide access & very nice remote control. I had been considering getting a MyHD 130 board as a QAM capable HDTV card but Windows XP doesn't have API support for QAM tuners and current open source that has QAM support doesn't support the MyHD card...sigh.
Wow
- Pros: Hmmm, not many
- Cons: TV Quality is terrible, the card causes BSoD's every day for me and ive put in every pci slot, installed and updated drivers numerous times, spent probably about 8 hours trying to get this thing to work and not cause BSoD's but that would just be way too convinient. Dont buy is my advice, overpriced and software isnt all that it says.
- Other Thoughts: Newegg has awesome shipping
Works great
- Pros: GREAT TV quality viewing and recording. Running with and Asus Mobo, AMD 64 3700+, 2gb DDR 400, serial 120gb hd and ATI X700 Pro. All the funtions work the way they are supposed to. DVR, timeshifting bla bla bla......
- Cons: Lack of documentation out of the box. You will have to play with the software and figure out how to make it work (not very tough). For the card to record from my video camera, I had to use an RF modulator and go in through regular coax cable. If I went in throught the composite ins provided with the card, it would tell me that the material was copyrighted and it would stop recording after about 3 seconds...... strange...... I was trying to record a kids b-day party that I recorded with the camera.
- Other Thoughts: If you want really good quality FM sound from the FM tuner, go get a good FM antenna. It works ok, but could be better. As most people do, I bought the card with the other features in mind, so I don't care. All in all, It does everything I expected and was a great buy.
