Compatibility issues
- Pros: Cheap card which support RAID1.
- Cons: Doesn't work on Windows XP Media Center Edition.
I called to SIIG company and they told me that they are not going to support Windows Vista for this card.
- Other Thoughts: It is important for this hardware to work on all operation systems. You won't buy a harddrive which won't be compatible with new operation system why would you buy a RAID card which is not.
Old and out of date
- Pros: Simple to install.
If it works out of the box for you, maybe it will hold up. If you have problems, though, you're on your own.
- Cons: Gets in the way of booting from CD in the BIOS. It's a real pain trying to shuffle between IDE and SIIG to get an OS installed. I had to install an old IDE drive to boot from.
Documentation is minimal at best. Support is very poor.
The Medley GUI is primitive.
- Other Thoughts: I really want this as a boot drive on Vista. It mostly works (though not as boot), but I've had several disk corruptions and the RAID set has rebuilt itself half a dozen times.
It's 5 years old and most of the RAID stuff has moved to SATA, so there seem to be no further plans for support.
Be wary if using with Maxtor Drives!
- Pros: Worked well for over a year.
- Cons: Don't know if the card is at fault but two of my Maxtor drives failed within a few days time after owning them for over a year. A third Maxtor drive that was not connected to the card also died shortly thereafter. Recovery counsels indicate that there are bad sectors.
- Other Thoughts: These problems may have occurred by means other than the card (500w power supply is not large enough, heat problems & the ability for Maxtor drives to withstand heat). If you don't have any Maxtor drives you should be fine because all my Western Digital drives connected to the card are still running fine.
