Slightly iffy bootable CD support
- Pros: Simple to install, supports optical drives (though see below), performance seems pretty good (for optical, at least - it supports fast CD burns - I haven't tested hard drives)
- Cons: Bootable CD support is good, but not perfect. I didn't test exhaustively, but it seems to fail booting CD's that emulate a 2.88 MB floppy (not uncommon in the *nix world). Windows CD's work fine, and so do most Linux CD's I have (including those that use -no-emul-boot). It's only a few CD's that cause problems, but it's definitely a limitation in the controller logic and not a media problem.
- Other Thoughts: This would be an easy recommendation if the last few wrinkles with bootable CD support were ironed out. But since most cheap controller cards don't support ATAPI at all, and this card's bootable CD problems are pretty rare, I still think it's a good buy. For most people (i.e. those who don't regularly boot a lot of home-made operating system and rescue CD's), this is a nice IDE controller for a decent price.
Excellent!!!
- Pros: Excellent card. Downloaded updated drivers from Promise website and installed flawlessly. I attached drives to the card and the full diskspace was recognized (a 200 & 300 Gig drive). Transfer rates have been great. I haven't had a chance to officially measure the transfer rate, but just from a real-world view, it behaves great.
- Cons: No Cons so far. This card r0x0rz.
- Other Thoughts: For all you crazy Abit BP6 ppl like me, this card rules over the onboard ATA66 ports on the mobo. Also, it won't give you a hassle when putting in a drive larger than 132 Gig.

Double-check!
- Pros: Ability to plug in HDD LED is a nice feature. Easy to plug in and driver install is a breeze (once you have everything right). Comes with drivers for pretty much any OS.
- Cons: Comes with one PATA cable, but has two ports? That doesn't make sense. Lucky for me I had plenty of cables on hand.
- Other Thoughts: DOUBLE-CHECK THE JUMPERS ON YOUR DRIVES! I had a problem where Windows would take a very long time to boot up and then when trying to load the drivers, it would never finish installing. Also, Windows refused to boot into Safe Mode.
Going back in and checking the cables/jumpers, I noticed I had two drives on one cable that were both set to Slave. Fixed those and it worked like a charm!
Promis IDE Card
- Pros: Promise makes the best PCI IDE, and probably SATA cards around. They just work!!
- Cons: There is nothing negative about Promise PCI cards!!
jas
- Pros: I have had one of these for over 6 years and it works great. I have used it with win98, xp home 32bit, xp pro 32bit and vista ultimate 64bit. Once I got the right drivers loaded I haven't had a problem. The drivers and still fairly easy to find on the Promise site. The card will last longer that the cables.
- Cons: replacement cables seem to be hard to find.
