The MR5S1 from Sans Digital is a portable data storage solution for SOHO or small businesses seeking to expand their storage capacity and keep their data safe. It can hold up to five 1.5TB SATA I or SATA II hard drives in a RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5, 6 or JBOD configuration, giving you a choice in how you want to protect your data. The hot-swappable SATA trays allow easy replacement of the drives without having to shut the MR5S1 down.
There is an Intel 80219 I/O processor that runs at 400MHz and 128MB of memory on board to maximize performance. The back panel comes with a plethora of I/O connectors: one RJ45 Ethernet port, one RS232 port, and two Ultra 320 SCSI connectors for high-speed connection to your host system. Three fans mounted on the back panel keep the whole thing cool. Indicator LEDs are provided to warn of HDD, temperature or fan problems. Keep your data safe with Sans Digital.
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Installed with 5 750GB HDD in RAID 5 and set >2TB Support, Windows XP Pro can recognize the whole 3TB volume instantly. The transfer speed can go beyond 200MB/s Fantastic! The enclosure feels sturdy and solid.
Cons: No problem with SCSI Card!
Other Thoughts: Talked with the tech guy from Sans Digital, he answered all the questions and gave me some helpful hints.

Good Performer ... A Few Problems

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Works as advertised with a lot of good options for RAID configuration that can be implemented through the front panel interface. Compact enough to be locked away or sit on your desktop. Fairly quiet, but not silent. Fairly solid construction will likely withstand the test of time.
Cons: Had to switch which SCSI port was used to connect to the computer because the when connected to the first one tried the unit couldn't be detected by the SCSI card. The device only comes with a one page quick set-up guide and no other documentation either with the unit or on their web-site.
Other Thoughts: I contacted the tech support at SansDigital for help and was able to talk to a tech within a few minutes. They definitely need to improve their documentation and their web-site. The non-SCSI sister product, MR5CT1, states that it only supports <2TB volumes - this product states that it supports >2TB, but they are very similar products and I haven't tested whether this is true yet. Only Windows XP 64-bit and Server 2003 with SP1 support >2TB volumes in the Microsoft world, but it would be nice if this product and the sister product supported >2TB volumes. Have not had a chance to benchmark the speed of RAID5, but it seems pretty fast.
