5 out of 5 eggsSmooth as silk

Pros: Compatable with standard PCI-2 slot.
Easy installation (IF you read the manual!!! Print it out or have another machine before you run this!!!)
Easy expandability for future use.
No noticable lag on system hardware.

Cons: Cost, obviously.
Manual is mostly in PDF form. So when things like driver requests come in at installation, it is hard to figure out which of the 4 drivers listed would be the proper one for your system.
Lack of power conversion cables. But that should not really be their concern.

Other Thoughts: 1st off, this DOES come with the SATA cables, so whoever says they don't is not talking about this retail package.

That being said, this was a breeze setting up. Installed without a single hitch (so long as instructions were followed, like setting up the RAID in the boot-BIOS first).

I am interested to see how this system performs in the long run with possible expansions in its future...

(Currently using 3 Seagate 500G 7200rpm sata perp drives...)

Pros: Good support - usually less than 2 minutes hold time, very knowledgable folks.

Cons: No cables included.
Poor support for Linux 2.4 kernels.
Convoluted firmware upgrade process for Linux.

Other Thoughts: Using this card with new drives can create this chicken-and-the-egg situation, and upgrading the drivers was a wild goose chase.

The driver kept 'unloading' itself on startup because the new drives didn't have a valid partition map. Instead of instructing me to run 'insmod 3w-9xxx.o', I was told I needed a firmware upgrade.

The Linux firmware upgrade utils don't work unless the driver is running, which left me trying to create a usable DOS boot disk.

After the firmware upgrade, the problem persisted... Loading the kernel module manually worked, after which point I could run fdisk successfully.

5 out of 5 eggsvery easily the best raid controller for sata

Comments: I've been running the 3ware 9500S-8 for over six months and it has been rock solid reliable. The 3ware RAID implementation and admin software is years -- literally -- ahead of implementations from Promise, Highpoint, etc. Also, the Linux support is top notch as the 3ware drivers are built into most Linux kernels. Overall, the 9500 series is a great value and I have been extremely happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsThis controller rocks !

Comments: What can I say ? I love this controller. I am using it for a RAID 5 Array. It is easy to install, set up, and administrate. It seems way faster than my old controller, but that was running IDE so it is probably not a fair comparison. Now, here is the kicker - 3Ware techs ANSWER THE PHONE, sometimes on the first ring, and I have never waited more than 30 seconds for help. Oh, and they know what they are talking about too. I can't remember the last product I bought where someone answered the phone, let alone helped me and had the answers to my questions. 3Ware was the answer for me. This card was totally worth the price. If you want a cheapo controller, there are plenty out there. This one is the answer if you are serious about RAID.
