Turn a standard 3.5-inch Serial ATA hard drive into an external USB 2.0-and-eSATA storage device with the AZiO ENC311SU31 black aluminum external enclosure. The slim, stylish drive enclosure measures 8.4x5.1x1.2 inches and the aluminum casing acts as a heatsink, to keep the hard drive cool during operation and help dissipate heat quickly when you're done. Since it's fanless, there's no extra noise.
The ENC311SU31 features eSATA (external Serial ATA) and USB 2.0 interfaces offering speeds up to 3Gbps or 480Mbits per second, respectively. But with the USB 2.0 port, you can still use this with older computers where eSATA is not available.
The drive is hot swappable, letting you plug and unplug the unit without needing to reboot. An attractive blue LED lets you know you have power and when the hard drive is actively working. The drive can lie horizontally or stand vertically in the elegantly-designed stand. The drive is powered by a bundled power adapter. In the package you'll find a driver disc, user manual, the enclosure, eSATA and USB cables, along with the power adapter and stand.

Great for DVR storage expansion
- Pros: I used this enclosure and the Seagate Barracuda 320 GB SATA drive to expand the storage space on my Explorer 8300HD HD DVR. It looks great and works flawlessly. I tried the USB connection with my PC and it worked fine. I then used the eSATA connector for the DVR and the drive was immediately recognized, formatted, and ready to go.
- Cons: It has a power brick that uses a DIN connector to connect to the enclosure, which seems a bit fragile and not as solid as other connectors I've seen. Works just fine, though.
- Other Thoughts: The black enclosure looks great alongside my other black home theater components!

- Pros: Easy to install, works, no problems. Of all the external enclosures on
- Cons: Not screwless, had to restart Windows MCE 2005 for them to be recognized (though I'm using eSATA, not USB, to connect them).
- Other Thoughts: Was looking for 2, or one 2-in-1, enclosures that matched the look of my two black, stacked Lian-Li PC-V800B cases. Of all the ones on Newegg and elsewhere I googled, these came the closest. Black, aluminum, with a blue power-led the same shade as the Lian-Li powerled, circular-holed front grill (though the grill isn't wrap-around like the Lian-Li's front grill). But close enough for the price. Can stack them horizontally or vertically. Fanless, quiet, heat-dispersing aluminum case is nice. Have been continuously on for a little over a month and no crashes or instability. Nice work AZiO.

Right Features, Odd Design
- Pros: Has the two interfaces that I'm interested in. Reasonable price.
- Cons: Installing the drive requires removing the top aluminum plate which is held on with 4 screws --- reinstalling this plate is awkward as mine was under pressure and thus requires uncomfortable pressure. Stand for vertical positioning is a joke, a slight breeze might blow it over.
- Other Thoughts: I'd buy another one as long as this keeps working. It's just an aluminum box after all, who cares if it's a little crooked.
Works with DirecTV HR22-100
- Pros: inexpensive, compact.
includes stand.
No fan to fail.
- Cons: None with WD green 1TB. May run warm with higher power drives.
- Other Thoughts: Have WD green 1TB inside connected to DirectTV HD DVR model HR22-100. Has been running about 3 weeks with no problems. Seems to increase recording time for HD from ~100 hours to ~250 hours.
Runs pretty cool, but WD green drives only use ~1/2 the power (and heat) of most drives.
It works well!
- Pros: It does what it needs to do, and does it well. Once put together, which took around 20 minutes, it feels quite solid. It can get a bit warm though, since there is no fan.
- Cons: A bit hard to put a few screws in place, which wasted a few minutes of instalation. The power connector on the back feels a bit weak. Blue LED on front is annoying as every other blue LED in existence.
- Other Thoughts: Has both USB and eSATA. USB performance isn't bad, but eSATA is better. Will be buying another!
