The VANTEC NST-250U2 external enclosure is designed to make your internal hard drive portable. You have the option of converting virtually any 2.5" IDE hard drive into an easy-to-carry hard drive, to be used with any system with a USB port. The enclosure is equipped with a USB 2.0 port and provides ideal storage capacity and ultra fast speeds for transferring extremely large data files and is backward compatible with USB 1.1.

The enclosure's Hot-Swappable and Plug and Play capabilities add convenience and mobility by making backing up large files fast and easy. The enclosure features an aluminum casing which acts as a cool surface as a heatsink. It also offers protection against vibration for reducing noise generated by the hard drive. The package includes a USB Cable and bag. This is a compact little case for extreme portability and solid protection of your data.

Pros: Very easy to setup, no software needed in XP, and as far as drive assembly I am very pleased. The drive plugs into the USB converter and slides into the case, two screws hold the USB converter and drive in place.

Cons: Case that comes with the drive is a little bit cheesy but it works fine. Also I wish that the screws that came with the unit where a little bit bigger as well as the holes not stripping out :(. Not major problems though just minor ones that could be fixed in the next version.

Other Thoughts: I spent a long time looking at different models and brands and got a lot of mixed reviews on almost all of the brands and models I looked at. I have bought a couple Vantec things in past and have always been happy with them so I gave their enclosure shot. Overall I am very pleased with this unit I have been using it for a couple months now with no problems. I would definitely get this again and wish I would have bought this unit in the beginning instead of spending weeks looking at various models. Highly Recommended.

Pros: Handles 100GB drives, low cost, good quality, flexible power options, extra screws included.

Cons: Carry pouch provides no pocket for USB cable. It would be easy to strip the screws out.

Other Thoughts: This enclosure powered up both a 100GB Hitachi 5400 drive and a 40GB Hitachi 4200 drive with no need for extra USB connector. Plug and play on Win2k and XP machines works perfectly. This enclosure seems to be marketed under various brand names including Vantec, Bytecc and AOC.

Pros: Nice case - very small. Includes a nice pouch. Easy to put together and works well. Good price.

Cons: Build quality could be better, but for the price, you are getting a good deal.

Other Thoughts: For the price, this seems to be a good deal. I do not use my external hard drive frequently, but when i do, it seems to work fine. I am pleased with my purchase.

Seems to work well

Pros: It works pretty well... I've only had it a day though...

Cons: The screw were a bit difficult to get in because...
A. The screw heads are freakin small... You need a really small philips to get a bite on the screw head.
B. The screw holes were misaligned. This causes the heads of the screws not to be flush with the outside of the case, but rather rather they rest at an angle.
C. No instructions, so you had to guess which way the drive connected to the USB adapter. Connect the drive interface ins to the USB circuit with the USB circuit board solder side down, component side up.

Other Thoughts: Other than the above, seems ok...

Pros: Small and fits my hard drive fits inside with a problem. Included USB cable is great

Cons: I don't like the rough finish on the outside, because it scratches the table VERY easily. There are holes located on each side (2 total) where you insert the included screws to fasten one of the end pieces. The problem is that the holes don't align very well, which makes screwing in the screws very difficult. Also the holes are NOT THREADED, which makes it even more of pain to get the screws in. ALso the screws are very small, like the ones used some eye glasses. If you drop it, then it is difficult find on the floor.
