BYTECC ME-740U2SI Aluminum 3.5" USB & eSATA 3.5" USB 2.0 + Serial ATA External Enclosure - Retail

Comments: I have three of these enclosures and they work very well. I use one as semi-permanent add on storage to my desktop PCs. The other two are used as backup devices. I use them with a Buslink PCI SATA card that has external SATA ports on my two desktop machines. The speed with the SATA is faster than my internal PATA drives. The USB is also acceptable but seems really slow after using SATA but it allows me to move these enclosures around as portable storage / backup devices. I also bought a spare power supply (AC-ME740) so I can leave it at work and just carry the enclosure back and forth.

Comments: Ok I just got this product today... I was originally using the Vantec Nexstar 3 USB... But at only 27MBps that was just too slow... So I opted out for this sata enclosure... I must say it runs great... I benched marked this at 115MBps... Works great and the hot-swap option is awesome... The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the casing looked kinda cheap... but I am a having a lucky day because my Vantec Nexstar case was the exact same size and structure as this bytecc... so all I did was switch the backs.. Now I have the power of sata with the nexstar look... I’m using this with the Vantec UGT-ST200 Serial ATA PCI Host Card which is a real nice card for little money… I would tell anyone out there if your going to use a external hard drive enclosure buy this one you just can’t beat the speeds of sata… My computer reads it as just another drive…. Another drive that just happens to run faster then my other two ide internal drives….so do it… what are you waiting for… buy the thing already…

Good performance, hard installation

Comments: I am not very experienced in hard drive installation but I assumed that with product comes a manual explaining how to install your internal hard drive into this external enclosure, unfortunately I was wrong. This prodcut comes with a manual indeed, but instead of exlpaining how to install the hard drive into the enclosure, the whole manula is dedicated to how to install the USB 2.0 drive or the SATA drive in case you use Win 98. It took me some time to fugure out whether to set the hard drive as master or slave or leave it on default. However, after you get past this hassle, performance wise, the product it good. I use with SYBA SD-PCB-SATA Serial ATA PCMCIA Card and Seagate 160GB IDE. Speed is noticably better than USB 2.0 but not 1.5g/s. So if you want to maximize the hardrive perfromance definently consider buying this prodcut along with a the SYBA pc card.
