The AMS Venus DS3 DS-23165SU2SBK is a sturdy enclosure that allows you to carry your internal hard drives where and when you want. Aluminum construction makes it lightweight and all the more durable. This enclosure supports 3.5" SATA hard drives (up to 750 GB) and has a SATA to USB 2.0 interface for rapid, reliable data transfer rates of up to 480 Mbps. Hotswappability lets T whenever you need to without reboot.
Cooling is provided by a silent 80 mm cooling fan, and Dynamic Airflow Technology (DAT) improves airflow for greater heat transfer. Works perfectly
- Comments: I ordered two of these to house my 160GB Seagate Barracude and my 250GB Western Digital Caviar. Within about 5 minutes of opening the packages both drives were up and running perfectly. These are SATA drives and I am connecting them to my PC via USB 2.0. I just copied 786MB worth of video files (9 file total) to one of the drives and it took about 24 seconds, which is about 32MB/sec. That's actually 33% faster than I was expecting with USB 2.0. So I'm extremely pleased with these.
The fans and aluminum cases keep the drives very cool and I can't even discern the fan noise over the fans of my PC.
Bottom line, these are fast, quiet, cool, and simply put, they just work.
SATA to USB 2.0 enclosures seem to be pretty hard to find these days, but I'd venture a guess that you'd have a hard time finding anything better than these. Plus they have a SATA connector on the back if you decide to connect that way.
- Pros: Solid construction
Big, SILENT, cooling fan underneath hard drive USB connectivity
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: Trying to find an external enclosure that fits a SATA HDD but still had USB external connectivity (not just SATA) is tough. This is probably the best option out there. The fan is big and silent, the casing is aluminium and jet black. Set up took less than a minute (you will need a small philips screwdriver). If you want a enclosure that is for SATA HDD and with usb external connectivity: look no furhter!!

Great Enclosure
- Pros: Great enclosure, super easy to use, very easy to install an sata drive. The cooling fan is great, nice and quiet.
- Cons: A little pricey, but super solid.
- Other Thoughts: Make sure you order the right one. The sata and ide models look identical until you open them up.
Cheaply made, died
- Pros: Quiet, units stack together, eSATA connection.
- Cons: Unit died 8 months after purchase. Won't power disk drive. Green power LED is on but drive doesn't work and not recognized by system. Put drive into another enclosure - no problems.
- Other Thoughts: Now that I think back this enclosure has had numerous issues with the drive not being recognized. These were intermittent. It's now failed completely. Avoid this cheaply made (but expensive) junk. I completely understand why NewEgg would not want to carry this item any more.
Best heavy duty USB/SATA enclosure
- Pros: - dependable heavy duty USB/SATA enclosure
- very sturdy construction - passive (metal chassis) and active cooling (quiet fan protected from getting dusty over time) and vents - installing a hard drive couldn't be any easier - the drive just slides into the adapter, no need for SATA cable from drive to the adapter, - hard drive is very tightly mounted to the board inside, preventing annoying vibrations - great compatibility with hard drives and Windows, immediately recognized by the system, installed and ready to use - solid power supply jack - it withstands frequent plugging/unplugging 10 times better than those 5-pin plugs in other brands' enclosures (I owned like 20 different enclosures so I learned what matters...) - the box comes with all cables (including SATA) and CD with drivers if you ever needed them - 1 year warranty - USB 2.0 and SATA connector. - Fast - I get 70-80MB/sec transfers on SATA, compared to 29MB/sec for USB 2.0
- Cons: - Naming this family of enclosures "Venus" is a cruel joke - they're just the opposite. They look like $20 OEMs but they really cost 2-3 times as much. In this regard most other brand enclosures beat AMS both hands down. AMS should hire some designers to work on making their enclosures look stylish/expensive. Just getting rid of curves from front and end pieces of plastic and making the more rectangular would help.
- price - this one isn't really a con. You get what you pay for. - cheap blurry plastic piece in front is easily scratchable and obscures drive activity indicator, especially looking at it from side. - front plate could do without VENUS in huge letters. Your boss might think you've got a collection of adult materials on such drive.[I'm not joking, there are people who think that way] - one of enclosures was DOA (that's 1 in 14 I've ordered for myself or my company)
- Other Thoughts: 1. I completely don't understand why NewEgg discontinued buying these from the manufacturer. The manufacturer has them in stock. NewEgg's competitors also have them in stock.
Recently my company needed 8 of these, and at that time Newegg had been out of stock (with no ETA) for over a month. In the end we purchased them directly from AMS Electronics. It was more expensive and more hassle (for the purchasing department to set up a new account for hardware vendor). We would rather buy them at NewEgg even at the same price as manufacturer.
2. If a nice looking USB/SATA enclosure is your goal, try other brands. Personally I need enclosures for work (more emphasis on moving around gigabytes of data and less emphasis on bells and whistles and neon lights). I'm going to buy AMS enclosures only, at least until someone else releases enclosures as good and better looking ;-)
