5 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure

Pros: Great enclosure, super easy to use, very easy to install an sata drive. The cooling fan is great, nice and quiet.

Cons: A little pricey, but super solid.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you order the right one. The sata and ide models look identical until you open them up.

1 out of 5 eggsCheaply made, died

Pros: Quiet, units stack together, eSATA connection.

Cons: Unit died 8 months after purchase. Won't power disk drive. Green power LED is on but drive doesn't work and not recognized by system. Put drive into another enclosure - no problems.

Other Thoughts: Now that I think back this enclosure has had numerous issues with the drive not being recognized. These were intermittent. It's now failed completely. Avoid this cheaply made (but expensive) junk. I completely understand why NewEgg would not want to carry this item any more.

5 out of 5 eggsBest heavy duty USB/SATA enclosure

Pros: - dependable heavy duty USB/SATA enclosure
- very sturdy construction
- passive (metal chassis) and active cooling (quiet fan protected from getting dusty over time) and vents
- installing a hard drive couldn't be any easier - the drive just slides into the adapter, no need for SATA cable from drive to the adapter,
- hard drive is very tightly mounted to the board inside, preventing annoying vibrations
- great compatibility with hard drives and Windows, immediately recognized by the system, installed and ready to use
- solid power supply jack - it withstands frequent plugging/unplugging 10 times better than those 5-pin plugs in other brands' enclosures (I owned like 20 different enclosures so I learned what matters...)
- the box comes with all cables (including SATA) and CD with drivers if you ever needed them
- 1 year warranty
- USB 2.0 and SATA connector.
- Fast - I get 70-80MB/sec transfers on SATA, compared to 29MB/sec for USB 2.0

Cons: - Naming this family of enclosures "Venus" is a cruel joke - they're just the opposite. They look like $20 OEMs but they really cost 2-3 times as much. In this regard most other brand enclosures beat AMS both hands down. AMS should hire some designers to work on making their enclosures look stylish/expensive. Just getting rid of curves from front and end pieces of plastic and making the more rectangular would help.
- price - this one isn't really a con. You get what you pay for.
- cheap blurry plastic piece in front is easily scratchable and obscures drive activity indicator, especially looking at it from side.
- front plate could do without VENUS in huge letters. Your boss might think you've got a collection of adult materials on such drive.[I'm not joking, there are people who think that way]
- one of enclosures was DOA (that's 1 in 14 I've ordered for myself or my company)

Other Thoughts: 1. I completely don't understand why NewEgg discontinued buying these from the manufacturer. The manufacturer has them in stock. NewEgg's competitors also have them in stock.
Recently my company needed 8 of these, and at that time Newegg had been out of stock (with no ETA) for over a month. In the end we purchased them directly from AMS Electronics.
It was more expensive and more hassle (for the purchasing department to set up a new account for hardware vendor). We would rather buy them at NewEgg even at the same price as manufacturer.

2. If a nice looking USB/SATA enclosure is your goal, try other brands.
Personally I need enclosures for work (more emphasis on moving around gigabytes of data and less emphasis on bells and whistles and neon lights). I'm going to buy AMS enclosures only, at least until someone else releases enclosures as good and better looking ;-)

5 out of 5 eggsGood enclosure for what it does.

Pros: Easy to install. Works quickly and easily on USB connection in Windows XP. Got a retail WD drive in and running in under 10 minutes.

Cons: Fan's a bit noisy sometimes. Instructions are poorly written, but any geek worth his/her salt should be able to set this thing up without them. Bulky: good for keeping in one place, but not really for transporting.

Other Thoughts: As others have noted, the SATA cable and port on the back of the enclosure is NOT eSATA, i.e. what's included is designed for "internal" connections. Check your ports on your cards or motherboards before buying: it may save you the cost & hassle of getting another cable!

Also...I mistakenly reviewed the eSATA version of this product stating the above. The review here is the correct; the other one isn't.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: Easy to assemble, very quiet operation, adjustable 4 prong power connector (used to power the hard drive) for older hard drives, works great with Linux.

Cons: Some parts of the unit (entire internal base and the fan) is plastic, not aluminum.

Other Thoughts: The plastic pieces of the unit seem like they wouldn't last too long for newer, high-capacity SATA drives which run very hot. However, all of my drives are older IDE types and this product will more than suffice.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat until it quit

Pros: I liked the fan, very easy to set up

Cons: Quit working after about 10 months

Other Thoughts: I got this last November-ish. It worked right away, right out of the box. I hardly had to do anything, it was so easy. It's been great. About after 6 months the fan would intermittently have problems and make a noise when I turned the unit on, but would stop when I moved the box around a little. It is now September and I just sat down to the computer and it was on about 20 minutes ago (I just went to have lunch). I got back and it was off. It won't turn on anymore. I have read the instructions and have tried moving the plug/changing outlets/etc. Nothing. I guess it just burned out.

4 out of 5 eggsSweet Box

Pros: Quiet fan, runs nice. Never really gets hot. Bought two; one to house an 80GB HD and one for a 250GB HD. Easy install, light weight to carry to different sites.

Cons: Plastic front cover seems it may scratch or crack if knocked around. Other than that, no cons yet.

4 out of 5 eggsGood buy, couldnt find it at first

Pros: Works fine, seems to distribute the heat well as well
USB works for sure, havent tried the sata

Cons: Its only Sata, not ESATA
Also, it took a while to even find it on windows, had to uninstall a driver it thought it was, reinstall another. The disk they give you is only for windows 2000 and under

Other Thoughts: Good buy once its working, super fast, newegg got it to me 2 days before i leave for college :)

4 out of 5 eggsWARNING: Mac compatibilty issues

Pros: n/a

Cons: Mac compatibility (see below), poor documentation

Other Thoughts: Warning to Mac users: although it claims compatibility with OSX, the CD that ships with the unit is Windows only. I attempted using this in combination with a SeaGate drive, but my iMac (dual Intel, 2GHz, USB2.0 interface) would not recognize the drive. The documentation that comes with the enclosure is very poor, and the website provides little helpful information in general and none at all for Mac users.
