Unreliable with Macs
- Comments: I don't know if it is just a problem with Macs, but I have had very poor results with these drives. I am a Mac consultant, and set up one of these to carry files around when I work on other people's computers. The Firewire port on the one I have been using works on newer Macs, but is inconsistent on B&W G3s and some older G4s. I have other 2.5" drive encloses that have no problem with the same computers.
Worse, however, is the USB port. It seldom works on Macs, particularly the olders ones.
Recently, I bought 3 of these enclosures to assemble drives for clients. 2 of the three didn't work at all with either of my own Macs. The third worked on Firewire but not on USB.
If you're using Macs, I recommend the Macxxly cases. They are a little more money, but much more solid construction and work reliably.
going strong on a mac and pc for over a year
- Pros: nice, short firewire cable - fast and reliable - small form factor - sturdy metal case
- Cons: USB requires (provided) USB ---> USB Data + Power cable on some computers.
- Other Thoughts: I have been using this as a firewire drive on a MAC powerbook for more than a year. the short f/w cable goes well with the laptop and is easy to transport. Mac laptops don't provide sufficient bus power to the USB ports to run external 2.5" drives from a single cable and only have one USB port per side - too far apart to use the 2 headed USB data+power cable.

Long since dead
- Pros: It was small and not terribly bad looking.
- Cons: It's been dead for six months. It died in the middle of transferring files over firewire from a perfectly good PowerBook. The internals are impossibly cheaply assembled and appear to have been designed with the intent of mangling as many appendages as possible. If your drive has a sticker on the top, it simply will not fit inside; there's a tolerance of exactly one atomic width at the top and bottom.
- Other Thoughts: I've decided; pay the extra bucks for a Macally enclosure. They're pretty, durable, and built out of solid aluminum ingots. This enclosure wasn't worth half of the $25 I paid for it.
Affordable and Works
- Pros: Works very well. Tried it on XP, Vista, OS X Tiger, and Leopard. Use of 6-pin (Large) Firewire port did not require additional power source which made it very portable with MacBook Pro. All other ports require additional power through USB ports or adapters.
- Cons: Materials used for the case are very cheap, especially the end pieces. If used often, threads of the screw holes can easily be worn.
- Other Thoughts: Supports only IDE drives, NOT SATA.
Nice case Great price
- Pros: This case works great for the price.
Firewire and USB 2...for a great price
- Cons: none.
